Synth Bass on Steroids: The Power of EFX Pedals

video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music

"In this video, Anthony reveals one of his personal favorite trade secrets. He shows us how to transform any synth bass sound into a synth bass on steroids by using various combinations of 5 different guitar efx pedals including the Electro Harmonix Big Muff, MXR MX-134 Stereo Chorus, Musitronics Mu-tron Phasor II, MXR MX-118 Analog Delay and A/DA Flanger. He illustrates the difference and importance between the wet sound (efx only), the dry sound (no efx) and mixing the wet and dry sound together. By running both of these sounds into a mixer, you have the option to add as much special personality from the wet sound without losing the energy and definition of the solid dry bass sound. You can then add as much of the wet sound as you prefer, much like adding spice to your food. Think of each pedal as a spice from a different part of the world. When you get the spice balance between wet and dry just right, you’ll create a sound with a unique personality. This is one of the special powers that comes from using EFX pedals with synthesizers and a sure fire way to create synth bass sounds on steroids.

Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.

His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major."

Processing Dub Techno Stabs (Ft Yamaha E1010 Delay, Master Room Spring Reverb & Mu-Tron Bi-Phase)

Sound Provider

"After my video about the Sound of the Musitronics MuTron BiPhase Phaser ( [posted here] ) someone ask me a demo with Techno Dub or Reggae Dub Chord Stab so I did this video quickly .

For this one I use the Novation Peak Synthesizer to do the stabs, Switch off the effects of the Synth, then I send the sound directly to my Yamaha E1010 BBD Analog delay then I send the signal to one channel of my MicMix Master Room XL-210 Spring Reverb , finally I send the signal to the Mu-Tron Bi-Phase.

Voila

Modded Korg DW8000 Analog Synthesizer w/ Musitronics Angel City Turbo Upgrade

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "This synthesizer works absolutely perfectly and has a few significant upgrades- most notably the rare DW Turbo Expansion from Musitronics / Angel City. This allows for bi-timbral patches (with splitting or layering), a new (really exciting) modulation generator waveform (random S/H!), keyboard transposition, two simultaneous MIDI send/receive channels, patch 'compare' functionality (to hear the saved version of a patch before overwriting with your live patch), and additional patch storage banks!

I also added three switches just under the joystick: portamento push-button, patch up push-button, sustain/hold toggle (great for tuning, performing with drones, etc)."

via this auction

"like any Musitronics FX unit, the Mu-tron Flanger is just great, with an amazing vintage sound, from very smooth, to very experimental - it is very, very rare, hardly ever seen in Europe and certainly not at this very fair starting price which is lower even, than the prices seen in USA - where the Musitronics Flanger is on offer, very occasionally.."

Vintage MUSITRONIC 6 Keyboard ORGAN MKS-470

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

Be sure to see the pic of it folded up.

"Circa late 1960's, this is a rare MUSITRONIC 6 Keyboard Organ once marketed to schools as a teaching tool for potential musical prodigies. There are 6 identical 4 1/2 octave organ keyboards, each one with its own volume button, 5 tone position switch, and a low/high balance switch. They are all attached to the main organ which controls which organ is to be played. Two control panels have color-coded on/off switches that match the knobs on each keyboard. Measuring 75" long, 31" wide, and 29" high, this organ has 4 smooth rolling wheels. When not in use, the organ can be easily folded up and neatly stored away.

This 6 Keyboard Organ is in good working condition. All of the keyboards work although there is some static due to dust; it is in need of a good potentiometer spray. Great for classroom or stage group use !! Awesome at a party !! This is an incredible unique piece of music history that would make a wonderful Christmas gift for the serious collector !! Please enlarge all photos for maximum viewing. Pick up only: Manhattan area or Kearny, NJ."

Musictronics G-170 pianolab Six Keyboard lab synthesizer

Title link takes you to shots pulled via this auction.

Details:
"This is a very unusual vintage item, Hard to find. It is a six keyboard music trainer. It is designed so that a teacher can have 6 students sit down at once and they can teach them all at the same time or indidvidually. 120 volts ac.

The keyboards all have their own headphone jacks for independant operation and also there are some swithches on the unit that seem to allow coupling together so each can hear the others for duet, trio, etc up to all 6. Also has some in or out jacks so maybe you can mix with other sounds? Not sure of all the functions of the other switches, but there also is built in speaker under the console too. There is some type of wired remote as well, I assume so the teacher can combine or separate each. Each keyboard has its own headphone/output jack, level control, and a multiposition "voice"control, that changes the sound to different synthesized sounds. They have a nice early synth sound to it perhapse like a simple moog or early roland?. Polyphonic ( multiple keys on each keyboard can be pushed and work at the same time) Probably uses early standard analog synth generators perhapse made by one of the big synth companies- all put into this big console -may be more valuable for someone to separate into six early synth units and sell each separately. It has been tested and all of the keys on all of the keyboards worked (except for the one of the keyboards seemed to have scratcy controls and has one key that did not work-probably needs contacts cleaned or adjusted). We did not have a lot of time to further check this, or know what all the extra switches on the remote and console do, so it will be sold as is-guaranteed not dead.

It conveniently folds up and wheels away so it is sort of portable. Because this item is so large it will be local pick up only or you can arrange truck pickup from your end after its' paid for."

I remember seeing this in the latest Future Music shot video via Sonic State.
