WebSID - web-based Commodore 64 synth

Published on Mar 11, 2014 Igor Zinken·13 videos

"A demonstration of the WebSID, a synthesizer that runs inside your browser (Google Chrome or Safari 6+ required, though most mobile devices such as iPads are ready to go) that pays homage to the retro sounds of the SID chip, a.k.a. the audio module of the Commodore 64. The trademark pulse width modulated waves provide a testament to deep, heavy bass lines while playing chords on the top keyboard will result in the trademark arpeggiated lines so typically associated with old school video games. For further sound sculpting, a high res filter and echo have been added to turn the WebSID into a chaotic drone machine.

NOTE : the audio glitches in the video, but is a side effect of the screencast, no such glitches are present in the actual application.

You can play with the WebSID directly by following this link :
http://www.igorski.nl/experiment/websid

or get it as a (free) Chrome Web App so you can run it offline:

Online Wobbulator - 1960s BBC Oscillator Emulation

"In the early 1960s, synthesizers did not exist. Instead the Radiophonic Workshop begged and borrowed as many test oscillators as possible from other BBC departments.

The versatile "wobbulator" was a sine-wave oscillator that could be frequency modulated. It consisted of a metal box with a few switches and one very large knob that could sweep the entire frequency range..."

Check it out here.

"The "Wobbulator" was one example of a recycled or salvaged piece of equipment put to creative use in the Radiophonic Workshop. The Wobbulator was in fact a oscillator (looking at archive pictures quite likely a Brüel & Kjær Beat Frequency Oscillator 1022 used by sound engineers to measure the acoustic properties of studios or by electrical engineers to test equipment.

The large centre knob sets the frequency of a primary oscillator. This frequency is then modulated (or "wobbled") a small amount by a secondary oscillator. The depth of the wobble is controlled by the amplitude of the secondary oscillator, and the frequency of the wobble by its frequency.

When the frequencies are in the audible range, the wobbulator can produce a wide variety of space-y sounds.

To simulate the wobbulator we use the OscillatorNode from the Web Audio API. We've taken a historical liberty by including a switch to control the waveshape of the primary oscillator. While probably not true to the original device, the OscillatorNode makes this too easy to resist!"

BENT: The Google Moog Mini-Doc - Story Behind the Moog Google Doodle

Uploaded on Dec 21, 2012 googleplay·208 videos

"Get free tracks from Carl Craig, El-P, Divine Fits and Exitmusic: http://goo.gl/DkYIB
Watch performances from the Moog Sound Lab: http://moogfest.com/

In May of 2012, Google turned its homepage over to Moog, creating a playable version of one of their synthesizers. The synth "Doodle" was used by over 300 million users, and brought a new level of attention to the Asheville, N.C.-based company. Acknowledging this, Moog, as part of their 3rd Annual Circuit Bending Contest held during the Moogfest music event, called for enthusiasts and benders to create a sampler and use the Google Moog Doodle as the basis for it's sounds. The winning sampler was unlike anything we'd ever seen, and we contacted some of our favorite musicians, including Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig and hip-hop icon El-P, to create or rework songs using this new tool. The resulting tracks and documentary chronicle the dynamic relationship between technology and music, and how each field pushes the other in unpredictable and amazing directions.

Wave-PD1 HTML5 Online Pad Synth

Update: the URL would help. Sorry about that: http://alxgbsn.co.uk/wavepad/

via Livio Lanzetta on Facebook

"TRY IT!

Can Your Mobile Device Play This? (HTML Audio Test)

Alex Gibson’s WAVE-PD1, aka WavePad, is a basic synth toy that sounds a bit like a theremin, built with HTML 5 audio.

WavePad has a simple touchpad UI and generates sound based on the wa
veform and filter settings that you can select. It can also be affected using delay and feedback settings.

While it’s unsophisticated as a synth, it’s built with HTML and delivered via the Web, so it should theoretically be cross-platform. At this time, only about 25% of the smartphones in use support HTML5 audio.

Does this work with yours?"

This worked for me on Safari, but not Firefox. The resolution is a bit large for a phone but it does work.
