Sega Genesis MIDI Synth - GENMDM - MegaDrive

"This is an original GENMDM from Littlescale. If you are looking at this, you probably know what it is. It allows midi control through USB to control the sound chip in a Sega Genesis.

http://little-scale.com/

WHAT IS IT?___
GenMDM is a music interface for your SEGA Genesis or Mega Drive console.

Use GenMDM to write sweet chiptunes using your favourite MIDI / audio sequencing software. GenMDM will appear as a MIDI output device on your Windows, Mac or Linux-based computer. GenMDM will respond to MIDI notes and MIDI CC data, and will give you a high degree of real time control over the sound chips inside of the SEGA console.

All voices and sound functions of the standard SEGA FM and PSG sound chips can be controlled via MIDI. There is a small FAQ in this thread on chipmusic.org. You might be interested in reading it."

SEGA GENMDM Enclosed

Published on Dec 18, 2013 eptheca·5 videos

"I built my GENMDM interface into my SEGA Mega Drive, so it's just connected to the computer with a standard A-B USB cable. I also put the cart PCB in a cart enclosure and designed a label. Full control of 6 FM channels and 4 PSG channels.
With Little-Scale's Max4Live patches it's really easy and fun to get all these sounds from the SEGA."

GENMDM - MIDI interface for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive

"First go with my new GENMDM, MIDI interface for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive by little-scale

http://little-scale.blogspot.com

I love it!
I have to learn more about FM synthesis, but with all the Max 4 Live patches he's made it's very user friendly.
I knew I would find a new use for my 32 knob custom MIDI controller
On my moded SEGA MD V1 with discrete YAMAHA YM2612 chip it sounds, yes MEGA :)"

Korg NanoPad Sequencer

Published on Jan 8, 2013 littlescale·360 videos

"Korg NanoPad Sequencer
---
A simple, proof-of-concept sequencer that can be applied to a range of drum pad controller models.

8 pads are used for sequencing.

4 pads are used for selecting between four different sequences, running simultaneously at different related tempo subdivisions.

The XY pad is used to store MIDI CC data for each step for each sequence, and as thus can be used to automate a range of parameters, increasing the available expression for such a setup.

EEPROM / Flash Music: 29F010 Audio Sample Playback

YouTube Published on Jul 7, 2012 by littlescale

"More info:
http://little-scale.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/flash-eeprom-music-29f010-sample.html

I am interested in exploring the 29F010 flash chip as a means of audio sample storage and manipulation. This is a basic setup whereby a sample is stored in the 29F010 memory, and is recalled in a loop continuously.

The basic idea is this: A square wave is generated, which in turn generates a set of address bits, which in turn are sent to the 29F010, which recalls each sample located at that address, which is then presented at the digital data outputs of the 29F010, which in turn are sent through a resistor to resistor ladder, which acts as a digital to analog converter.

By manipulating the address bus, we can change the order in which samples are played and thus change the sound.

O Against I: 2 Devices / 3 Ins / 4 Outs

YouTube Published on Apr 24, 2012 by littlescale

"Two USB sound cards are directly connected - the output of one is routed to the input of the other and vice versa. A simple matrix volume mixer allows any one input signal to be routed to any of the four output signals at independent signal levels.

The result is an interesting drone with a surprising amount of subtlety and complexity.

USB MIDI Controlled AY-3-8912

YouTube Uploaded by littlescale on Dec 22, 2011

"USB MIDI Controlled AY-3-8912

Early prototype.

http://little-scale.blogspot.com/"

General Instruments AY-3-8912 via wikipedia: "The AY-3-8910 is a 3-voice Programmable Sound Generator (PSG) designed by General Instrument, initially for use with their 16-bit CP1610 or one of the PIC1650 series of 8-bit microcomputers. The AY-3-8910 and its variants became popular chips in many arcade games, and was used on, among others, the Intellivision and Vectrex video game consoles and the MSX, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, Oric 1, Colour Genie, Elektor TV Games Computer and Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128/+2/+3 home computers as well as the Mockingboard sound card for the Apple II family. It was also produced under license by Yamaha (with minor modifications, i.e. a selectable clock divider pin, and a double-resolution but double-rate volume envelope table) as the YM2149F."

It's also used in the The MIDIbox AY V1: "The MIDIbox AY V1 is stuffed with a General Instruments AY-3-8912 sound chip..."

One Loop, One Function. Simple Arduino Music.

"I found this via BleepLabs twitter. Had to try it out by myself.
All the necessary info is here:

little-scale.blogspot.com/2011/10/tweetable-one-loop-one-function-simple.html

From Little-Scale blog:

"In general, I guess we can call this "index modulation", in the sense that we have a counter (i) that keeps track of a loop. The sound output is calculated on a sample by sample basis using a function that manipulates i in various ways (left and right shifting, multiplication, divide, modulo etc). The combined output for each sample is then output to the R2R DAC where the value is converted to a voltage, which can be sent to a piezo, an amp or an audio input.

I find these ideas very exciting - it's a very minimalist approach to creating sound and music on a basic level, yet the outcomes are at times complex, containing rhythm, pitch and structure."

Indeed, very exciting."
