"I often read on music forums 'why are hardware synthesizers stuck in the Stone Age?'. People are often unhappy with many things. People can like something and at the same time a couple of things can irritate people, if, for example, we are talking about hardware synthesizers. For me AN1X is perfect.

There are a lot of new music products available on the market now. But often they are the ones that don’t suit me in many ways. And I love my AN1X, it has never let me down or annoyed me. After modification, which greatly changed the sound for the better, it is a polyphonic analogue for me! On YouTube, crumbs remain from the original sound, but live my AN1X sounds so that it gives me goosebumps. If you look at the synthesis diagram on the case cover, you can understand from it that AN1X is simple! The entire diagram does not show its capabilities even at 20%. AN1X can do a lot better than my Eurorack modular! And and if you want that Eurorack modular to do what the AN1X can do, it must occupy half of the small room.

"What can a Yamaha AN1X synthesizer that is already 27 years old do? First of all, it can make me happy because it doesn’t show any signs that it will ever break down and stop working. He can also sound completely different and with his creative abilities generate crazy and very musical timbres. AN1X is the most musical synthesizer for my ears.

There is only one preset in this video. It consists of two different timbres (2 scenes or dual mode), which I controlled using DAW via two MIDI channels simultaneously. I recorded the sum of the two timbres into a wave file at one time. I normalized the amplitude to the maximum peak and added audio to my video.

2 Scene Memories With Realtime Morphing Between Scenes

Each AN1X voice has two Scene memories which let you store "snapshots" of specific control knob settings, to effectively give you two distinct sounds - each of which are available at the touch of a Scene switch.

Scene Control Feature

You can activate the "Scene Control" feature which lets you use the Modulation Wheel (or a Foot Controller, or any other assignable continuous controller) to morph, or cross-fade between Scenes in realtime as you play. If there's a particular sound during the morph that you want to keep, you can easily store it to one of the Scene switches for the selected voice. You can even load Scene data from another voice to the current voice.

JS-Sound Yamaha AN1x Magic Soundset with 128 new Presets for AN1x

Yamaha An1x sound is unique, I love its sound and I will never sell my An1x! For its time in 1997, it is the best VA synthesizer.

There are no components or blocks inside the case like a power supply that can dry out the electrolytic capacitors. Nowadays it can be bought and all components such as knobs are in stock! In my synthesizer, I changed all the knobs, the condensers have been in perfect condition for 22 years, it works flawlessly, it has an excellent ribbon controller with X and Z function, there is an aftertouch, convenient control, a large fan factor, super sound and incomparable , it has a warm sound, it can sound partly like an analogue, it can be a spaceship, that's my opinion, but it's true about an AN1X synthesizer!

The Yamaha AN1X is the best of the best VA synthesizers of its time, but even today it is still relevant. JS-Sound"

Can the Yamaha AN1x match the Roland JX-3P sound?

Interesting comparison. I never made the connection before.

"The JX3P and AN1x both have this 'sizzle' sound that I can't explain. When I got the AN1x I thought it had a very similar sound, so I decided to make a few sounds and see if I could recreate the JX3P sounds. Note that the volumes aren't matched, I wasn't really going for a perfect comparison, just whether I could capture the sound. This isn't a 'versus' - it's an attempt to match the sounds - plus the volumes fluctuate based on the tones.

The first thing I tried to do was make a very simple patch and capture the sound of the JX chorus - you can hear that early on.

Later, I tried to replicate some sounds with the resonance turned up, this posed a very big challenge for me, I don't think I ever really did a good job with the comparison.

Sometimes I went off on a tangent, with either synth. Sorry about that.

I left every bit of my musings in there - you can see just how long and difficult it was on the AN1x to capture the JX3P sound, and even then I feel it wasn't as good. I felt I did a pretty decent job with the chorus though.

The JX3P is probably the more interesting synth to me, because I just like how it sounds with very little processing/editing. In other words, it has a large sweet spot, but it doesn't do a whole lot to begin with. The AN1x, while completely manageable as a synth, is just somewhat hard to use sometimes, and when you play a simple synth next to it, it's easy to get a little frustrated when finding your way around the AN1x.

The look, and feel, of the Roland JX3P, and the sound - just feel unmatched. I have owned a Juno 106 (and sold it because I liked my Matrix 1000 more) and I have had a Juno 60, borrowed from a friend... but the JX3P just has something I like a little more than either of those (though the Juno 60 is just a beautiful synth, I'd own it for that reason alone, and those snappy envelopes).

If the JX3P had the faders of the Juno and the fast envelopes, there'd never even be a contest for me.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the completely random video I put together."

MIDI Mod on the iPhone as a Performance Utility - an AN1x style patch on the Prophet Rev2

"I love the sound of the AN1x, but programming it is not the quickest experience. The Rev2 has similar capabilities from a sound design perspective (plus a whole lot of things that the AN1x can't do). However, the AN1x has an awesome effects section that blows away that of most modern synths. In this video, I use MIDI Mod to do some fairly simple routings, just using the Mod Matrix. No LFO's, envelopes, arps, or anything else.

MIDI Mod is running on an iPhone X, hooked up to the MeeBlip Cubit Go via USB. MIDI out of the Cubit Go is running to the MIDI In on the Rev2. And MIDI Out of the Rev 2 is going to MIDI In on the Cubit Go. This gives MIDI Mod 2-way communication with the Rev2. Now this could easily be done without DIN cables at all, just connecting MIDI Mod directly to the Rev2 over USB. But later in the video, external effects are added to level the playing field with the AN1x on that front, somewhat. One of the pedals (Ventris Dual Reverb) has a MIDI input and so there's a MIDI DIN cable running to that as well.

The idea behind the patch isn't to recreate the exact patch on the Rev2, but to create a similar patch from a structural point of view. 2 layers, one as a pad, and 1 as an arp spanning multiple octaves. With the ability to fade the arp in and out via the modwheel. "Program Volume" is not a modulation destination on the Rev2 itself, but we can easily access it with MIDI Mod (or almost any other of the bazillion parameters on the Rev2).

In addition, Note (MIDI Note) is routed to Layer A Pan Spread and Layer B Pan Spread on two different slots. Layer A has the arp, and so the range is set to 63-127 to throw the voices out wider. Layer B is the pad, so the range is restricted to 0-12 to keep things more centered, which makes that aspect of the sound a little more meaty, especially the lower notes. This can easily be adjusted to taste.

Finally, the modwheel is assigned to the pre-delay time of the Ventris later on in the video when the external effects are brought in.

The point of this is to illustrate what you might do with MIDI Mod in a pinch, to get that little extra something. Made even easier now that you can do it just by using your phone!

"Yamaha AN1X (my version i have modified) this is a vintage synthesizer that never ceases to amaze me with its capabilities over the years. It produces millions of unique sounds that you can dream, fall asleep to, imagine a fantasy world and just enjoy what this unique synthesizer of the late 90s can generate. Its minor flaws do not bother me in order to love this synthesizer, which the modern manufacturer Yamaha still cannot repeat. ;-)

Its sound is pure as a baby's tear, unlike the sound of the Virus TI synthesizer, for example. In what order would I sell the VA synths? Clavia would be the first to sell everything. Many Korg from this category VA would also put up for sale. Roland JP80xx got tired after 5 days. Wouldn't leave a single Waldorf! Novation Supernova 2 would also sell without regret. Without Virus TI, my life would not be boring. Alesis ION would not have stayed with me. And only AN1x I would sell the very last turn.

What is the uniqueness of AN1x? If you understand how the music of the 90s differed from our days, how vinyl differs from CD, then you will understand that AN1X is also unique."

Here are a few examples of a very underrated Yamaha AN1x Virtual Analog Physical Modeling Synth. Polyphonic subtractive synthesis, FM, Sync, RingMod, Noise are available simultanously, Includes Editor, Modulation Matrix, 4 controller data can be drawn on the Computer screen. Oscillator waveforms, resonance, LFO speed, ADSR times.... can be modulated, This synth is capable of extremly short click & percussive sounds. 10 voice or 2 x 5 voice - unison - split - layer - morphing. The regular analog things you would expect it does as well, If I could only take one synth to a remote island this would be it. What is better than an AN1x? Two AN1x!
