EMS Rehberg

Title link takes you to the EMS Rehberg site. I knew about the UK EMS site, but not this site. According to Dennis Verschoor: "The German EMS was a european distribiteur and technican. Later on he was allowed to design/build ems stuff. Some people say the German ones are even build better. Good German quality (volkwagen, bmw, mercedess etc) : )"

According to their pricelist here, you can pick up a refurbished Synthi 100 for 55.000 Euros or roughly $66,184 US compared to this Synthi 100 with a minimum starting bid of $60,000 US.

Update: Notes from Malte:
"Some years ago where I had some cash I emailed Rehberg about the
possibility to purchase a Synthi A and he answerd rather quick that they
indeed are available. The website has never changed, like the EMS UK
one, but I guess its still valid. As a service you can borrow equipment
from EMS too, although not the 100 I guess :)

This picture shows the 100 that is now in small town Lueneburg

Here is the history of another famous of the first importers of synths
in germany (but only in german), Synthesizer Studio Bonn Matten +
Wiechers, who are credited on nearly every Kraftwerk CD and responsible
for the Synthanorma sequencer and Banana synth, an Oberheim clone.

EMS Logik Synthesizer + ext. keyboard - VEMIA

"Selling my beloved EMS Rehberg Logik Synthesizer with external EMS Rehberg keyboard controller. The Logik Synthesizer is in excellent condition, has some very very small surface scratches from normal use over the years. The Logik Synthesizer has Serial No.51. Electronics are in the best condition you can find, like new to be honest. Description of what this Logik Synthesizer contains: VCO, VCF with Phaser Output, LFO, Noise Generator, Slow Ramp Generator, Envelope Shaper, External Input, Portamento, Ring Modulator, Inverter, Output Section. Possibility to add the external keyboard controller. Or an external sequencer. This Logik Synthesizer does have an internal keyboard with black and white knobs, computer look-a-like buttons that looks like a 'normal' keyboard, and can be played like a keyboard. The Logik is a monophonic synthesizer which requires patching using cables instead of the usual EMS pin-patching. Included is the original powersupply which is 18 Volts DC, cables to make patches on the synthesizer, manual on cd-rom in PDF, and connector cable between the Logik and external keyboard controller. EMS Rehberg external keyboard controller. Serial No.96. Keyboard can be used on the Logik Synthesizer, Synthi-E or Synthi A synthesizers. In very good good condition, has some wear of normal use over the years. Keyboard is monophonic."

EMS Rehberg Analyse-Filterbank B1-II pair with matched serial numbers

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Another one in via M Me. I believe these are the first to be featured on the site. Anyone know when they were produced? I'm not finding them on the EMS Rehberg site.

"EMS Rehberg Analyse-Filterbank B1-II pair (2) available for sale! These units are ultra rare and it’s probably the only chance to find two with matched serial numbers. Both units are just been serviced and in perfect working condition.

The building quality is impressive with those long Penny & Giles faders, Pikatron and Haufe transformers and the Reticon filter chips inside. This are high-end studio effects with a phenomenal sound...

Both units are working on 220v and the serial numbers are: 223 & 224."

EMS Vocoder 5000

Paul Sop sent in the following on the EMS Vocoder 5000. It is interesting how much it does sound like the cylons in Battlestar Galactica. Thanks Paul!

Shot via EMSRehberg, who still makes Synthis and some other EMS products including the EMS Vocoder 5000 which will only set you back 23,000 Euro.

"I'm all about Vocoders lately. Check it out

EMS Vocoder 5000- AND -
EMS Rehberg 5000 Page (great pic here)

Pretty cool. A few factoids:

http://www.bigbluewave.co.uk/ems_vocoder_5000.htm- It is probably the highest specified vocoder ever. 22 bands.
- Includes things like Frequency Shifters, Oscillators, etc.. It's a whole synth!
- It weighs about 20kg!

Cyclons Forum
- It may have been used on the cylons.
- From this page:

Here are some audio samples of both the EMS Vocoder 5000 and the Cylons, see if you think they sound a like and are. Some sites such as one from Ben Liebrand "claim" it's the Sennheiser but after hearing this audio from EMS I have to go with that one.

First the Cylons:

cylon.wav
cylon2.wav
cylon3.wav
cylon4.wav
cylon7.wav
cylon9.wav

EMS Vocoder 5000:

EMS5000plab1.mp3
EMS5000p2.mp3
EMS5000p3.mp3

Apparently it cost 5000 pounds in 1976. If you want one today, it would cost you 23,000 euro from:

Pricelist

I guess it wasn't in the new Battle Star Galactica's budget!"

Update via Derek Wildstar in the comments:
"Some say the Cylons used the EMS Vocoder 5000 and others say it was the Sennheiser VSM-201!! The only thing I knew for sure is that a ring-modulator was also used (I don't know if that was part of the vocoder or not) and that it was based on the voice of Colossus according to Mr. Glen A. Larson himself. Matrixsynth if you, Paul, or anyone knows for sure please post the answer here. I personally believe they used the EMS Vocoder 5000. Thanks."

Brand New EMS SYNTHIs

via Matt on the AH list:
"I just spoke to Robin Wood at EMS and he told me that they plan to start making the Synthi A & VCS3 again in the next two months. They have sufficient parts to make about 40 VCS3s and even more Synthis. The timescale to completion will be about 18 months after that.

To join the waiting list you must send a cheque for GBP 150 to Robin and should then phone every 6 months to find out the progress. The VCS3 will cost GBP 3200 + VAT. Robin says that there are quite a few people who have been on the waiting list for years, so the allocation & availability isn't clear."

Before you get too excited, there were a few follow up threads stating that this has been stated several times in the past. Regardless, it is interesting. Robin Wood and EMS is still around, and there is the potential (parts) for new SYNTHIs. Definitely a fascinating bit of synth history. Hopefully it will happen. Just remember to pray. Because... Every nun really does need a SYNTHI. [more every ads]

Note EMS Rehberg also has them.

The Synthi has a new panel (MKI layout) the "hi level inputs" are replaced by the missing "outputs ch.1 ch.2" but still not wired yet. More info's about the EMS Synthi A/AKS/VCS3 at http://www.thesynthi.de (manuals etc.).."

The Synthi Group Vol.1 Now Available

You can find it and the track list on Clinical Archives
(scroll when you get there)

For the archives:
"Keywords: irritating; 50-60’s electroacoustic music; live electronics; psychedelic; experimental; avant electronics; electronic; space music; ambient drone; drone; glitch; improv; psychedelic rock; noise; electro; other

Synopsis:
Formed in 1969, Electronic Music Studios (EMS) quickly became innovators for the recording, production and advancement of electronic music. The ideas and designs that bubbled forth out of the ingenuitive minds of Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary, David Cockerell and others, led to the creation of some of the most wildly original musical / sound design equipment ever conceived. The VCS3, Synthi A + AKS, Synthi 100, Synthi E, Synthi Logik and the Soundbeam are among these,
almost unworldly, devices.

It is often said EMS gear has attained cult status, reaching a fervor of near worship among its users. The Synthi Group is an example and collection of such users. United through the Synthi blog and forum (www.thesynthi.de) and located throughout the world, the group's members have come together for a planned series of compilation volume releases where the individuality and approach of each member towards their EMS instrument is showcased and broadcasted for all to experience. The listener will hear wildly different examples of styles and sounds that this original, and oft times, vintage equipment can create.

EMS were true pioneers from the very beginning, always looking beyond the culture and times they were surrounded and seemingly trapped in. Still around today, thanks to Robin Wood and Ludwig Rehberg, they are one of the few companies involved with electronic instrument production that have had a continued run since their inception. The Synthi Group have honed the original pioneering spirit and DIY ethic of EMS with their Volume series, a collection of sounds encompassing beautiful dreamscapes, synaesthetic visions, dark ambience, aural abstractions, sonic absurdities, pulsating analog, glitch, ring modulators, and envelope shapers generating trapezoidal geometry. Beginning with Volume 1, the Synthi Group compilations aim to ensure the story of EMS continues well into the future of electronic music production.

In addition to the power supply, new patch cables as well as the original patch cables (standard mini jack), the lid of the "suitcase synthesis" and the original manual (or textbook) are included.

EMS-Rehberg Video Synthesizer

This popped up on my randomn picture viewer. I checked the EMS site (title link) and couldn't find this exact unit. I see the EMS Spectre, but it doesn't quite look like this. I did a quick search and didn't find much. If you know anything about it or a good site on it, please feel free to comment.

BuchlaPoemEmsAvs

YouTube Uploaded by deb7680 on Mar 20, 2011

"Following a somewhat trashy treatment of Gilbert Desmée poem with the same "BuchlaPoemTransformPart2" patch. At 0'30, the voice of Gilbert went before going to the Buchla in the Ems Synthi Aks emulation Ludwig Rehberg, Ems Avs Vst). The patch allows the Avs to deal with a radical voice, with very percussive effects (1'20, 2'15, and 4,33) combined with a random sequence produced by the Avs in the first two oscillators. The Osc 2 module while the first 3 in LFO modulates Osc Osc 2. The voice becomes true electronic instrument.

EMS Polysynthi

via VEMIA
"Following the recent sale on ebay of Vince Clarke's junked Polysynthi for £4100 here's another of these rare specimens. (VEMIA note: the main difference is that this is virtually as new, and has been checked by Robin Wood!) Polysynthi was designed by Graham Hinton in 1978 when EMS re-located to Oxford from Putney and the first units were shipped in March 1979. This example was the last one to come off the production line in 1981 after EMS went bust and all the stock was inherited by Datanomics. It has a Datanomics sticker inside giving the serial number as 616, but it is known that no more than 50 of these instruments were ever made. This one has been in dry storage for 29 years and has been renovated by EMS in Cornwall. It is in near new, 100% working condition with virtually no marks. The only significant mark is to the vinyl covering on the right-hand side. Most of the panels suffered from flaking of the yellow painted areas but this one is perfect - see photos. Weight: 18 kg Dimensions for shipping (approx): 100 x 76 x 38 cm Equivalent volumetric weight: 58 kg" Update via jochen in the comments: "Polysynthi was NOT designed by Graham Hinton. It was designed by a committee of Peter Zinovieff, Ludwig Rehberg and Alan Sutcliffe."

Update2 via petjen in the comments: "and Rose Zinovieff designed the bright panel."
