Modular synthesizer-Q118-Q117-Q110

YouTube via fystasjoppheng
"This is www.synthesizers.com. A modular synthesizer made by Roger Arrick. I,m having fun by using the Q118(instrument interface module), by taking the mixer(Q113) output in to the input of Q118, output it back to the amplifier(Q108)input. This make the nice overdrive(nasty) sound.
Next is some basic use of the noise(Q110) low frequency to the sample & hold module(Q117).
In the last part of the video I,m just fooling around by turning as many knobs and keys as possible.
I hope you like it!

ProbabilityDotCom.mov

YouTube via davidryle | August 21, 2010

"A lame attempt at trying a patch challenge. The idea was to have the third row of a Q119 sequencer to set the probability of an event. This was partially successful but still isn't quite 100%.

Basically, the output of the first row is for pitch, 2nd row is for gate on/off and 3rd row is for probability.
The use of a Q118 Instrument Interface was key. The "threshold" allowed me to fine tune in when an even t would occur. I used a Q110 Noise source to a Q107 filter in low pass mode before sending it to an amplifier which was controlled with the 3rd row of the sequencer. The voltage of the 3rd row was sent through a Q125 Signal Processor and then a Q117 S&H to derive useful voltage for the amplifier. The amplified/filtered noise was sent to the Instrument Interface which produced a gate to send to the Q128 Switch. The Switch was controlled by the 2nd row and allowed the "probability randomized" gate to come through when a step was selected by the 2nd row of the sequencer.

Whew!

Don't ask why it works, but it does as you can see. The steps that are active (most of the time in the video) are 1, 3 5 & 6. Step 3 is 50% probability, and step 5 is 30%. Steps 1 & 6 are 100% (or close).

The whole thing is not quite perfect. I tried many combinations to get this one. I had plenty of ideas such as using the filter and S&H to limit the noise selection, and most of the real problems occurred because of trigger problems.

The astute will notice the second step will fire regardless of whether there is a "probability" of it or not. Of course this is controllable with the 2nd row voltages and can be prevented.

I think someone could use the Q118 Instrument Interface and the S&H modules to get a better go at this, but I ran out of time."

Synthesizers.com Q118 Instrument Interface Amplifier

images via this auction

"The Q118 module provides an interface for external input sources such as a guitar, microphone, etc. The incoming signal can be amplified up to 1000 times. An envelope output is created that will track the amplitude of the incoming signal. This envelope can be used to control filters, oscillators, and other modules. A gate signal is created based on a manual threshold control which can be used to trigger envelope generators or sequencers. An LED indicates gate signal output to aid threshold adjustment. A short trigger pulse is also provided. An output jack provides access to the amplified original signal for use by other modules.

Click here for more info on this module."

New Synthetic Sound Labs JJP SampleCorder – Model 1451 5U Module

via Synthetic Sound Labs

The SSL 1451 JJP SampleCorder module is the long awaited re-issue of our humble tribute to Jean-Jacques Perrey and the early musique-concrete pioneers, where small snips of recording tapes were pieced together into new forms of musical expression. Now you can experiment using analog sound samples that can be played back with electronic precision.

SSL is pleased that the SampleCorder was officially endorsed by none other than the late, great Jean-Jacques himself!

The SampleCorder is designed around a vintage ISD2560 analog voice recorder chip. We have also included a compander chip to greatly reduce noise and improve clarity. The overall fidelity is far better than simple 8-bit samplers.

Each module can hold two audio samples, each from a few milliseconds up to a several seconds. Each can be independently triggered manually via a panel mounted button, or by a gate pulse. Once triggered by applying a gate signal, the sample will play to the end of the sample and stop, or if the gate signal is still present, the sample will repeat for as long as the gate is applied. Premature retriggering or early truncation of a sample is not possible. Samples are stored in non-volitile memory, so power loss should not affect the memory, though this is not guaranteed. Control voltage recording is not supported.

Using the “REC/PLAY” switch in REC position, the Status LED will flash, indicating record mode. A new sample is recorded whenever either the “START” (1 or 2) button is pressed or the “GATE” (1 or 2) signal is applied. The sample length is determined the length of these events. Each new sample will destructively over-write any previous samples on that channel. Sample editing is not supported.

Record input level is critical for balancing noise levels and distortion. The SampleCorder adds the convenience of the “RECORD LEVEL” input attenuator and an “OVLD” LED indicator so you’ll always know when you’re near the maximum.

Sample playback speeds may be adjusted from normal, to nasty sounding clicks and buzzes, to nearly one octave / double speed above recording speed with a convenient front panel “Pitch” control. The “Pitch CV” input is roughly exponential (don’t expect tracking) and may require external attenuation to adjust the range to a convenient level. Record speed is fixed. 1 to 1 playback speed/pitch is usually at about “6” on the Pitch knob. This will be the normal position for this knob, unless you require pitch / time bending effects.

The “PLAYING” output provides a “high” gate for the entire length of the sample being played back. It can be useful for triggering other SampleCorders, sequencers and envelope generators for even more crazy fun.

Probably the most challenging aspect of using the SampleCorder is getting a good sample. Recording timing can be critical and may need to be practiced when samples are to be triggered at precise instants. We have found that in some applications, using the gate output from something like a Synthesizers.com Q118 Instrument Interface can be most valuable.

Though the SampleCorder is not a “looper” and it’s frequency bandwidth is a bit limited, you will no doubt find many creative uses for this unique module.

Ringer DotCom Modular

YouTube via davidryle
"Arrick Modular live recording of a patch.
Heart of the patch is of two sets of Q117 S&H and Q118 Instrument Interfaces fed off of one Q110 Noise Generator. Instrument Interface's were output to two Q961 Interface modules for long gates, then routed to two Q128 Switches to select a control voltage for the oscillators from the Q960 Sequential Controller stages.
This created a random combination of two pitches for each step from the sequencer even though the control voltages were still tuned. Some of the voltages were sent to more than one oscillator which in turn fed either soft sync or low frequency oscillators. Some oscillators were sent through a Q116 Ring Modulator. A Q105 Slew Limiter modified one oscillator for down glide pitch modulation.
A Yves Usson Gate Delay (STG Soundlabs) module was used for late timings and slew into a couple of oscillators for some of the background effects.
Three filters were used. A STG Soundlabs Sea Devils Filter, a Q107 State Variable Filter and a Q150 Transistor Ladder Filter. Four envelope generators, two mixers, four amplifiers, a distributor, a multiple and a Pan/Fade module rounded out the patch modules.

Two Behringer DD400 digital delay units were used in line with some of the oscillators, and a Lexicon MX200 was used for final delay.

The last few seconds were a fade in of the drone oscillator used in the background without the sequencer running. Audio mixed in Cubase 4 by Steinberg and the video edited in iMovie by Apple."

Es un sistema muy completo en caja de madera de nogal original.

También incluye el teclado original con el que puedes controlar el sistema mediante dos CVs o midi.
