Atrium: On Systems

video upload by Whimsical Raps

"Atrium is a new instrument where playful gestures meet dynamic systems.

This video articulates the core systems for composition and environment building in Atrium. Methods for structuring play, while allowing and encouraging the artist to embed personal creative ideas. These systems set the rules of play, subtly redefining the specifics of familiar gestures.

The next chapter, Atrium: On Connections, looks beyond these five walls. Exploring how Atrium can be extended, as a leader or collaborator.

Whimsical Raps: Atrium

video upload by Whimsical Raps

"Atrium is a new instrument, where playful gestures meet dynamic systems.

new ways to compose
 new ways to express
  new ways to play

https://atrium.whimsicalraps.com/

five voices of analogue synthesis, controlled and modulated polytimbrally. we’ve taken ideas from our decade of modular exploration, and rethought how we reach into polyphony.

each voice is shaped by its harmonic energy while three core timbre modes push into richer territory. from simple suboctave and noise waves, through frequency modulation, and landing in formant synthesis reimagined. all squeezed through a lowpass/gate combination, providing balance and occasionally emphasis.

no digital multi-effects here, just spectres in the machine. a novel configuration of three filters, two delays, and feedback. front and almost centre — this resonant body is meant to be played. sequenceable, modulatable, while feeding back not just sound, but shape for unfolding cybernetics.

and to modulate! everything mappable to everything else, tactile input extended on the fly, mapping as a performance in itself. sources are dynamically phased across voices, and stretched in relative duration. gestures captured into five recorders, extending play rather than overriding it, all twisted in time at your whim.

Atrium is deeply learnable, and for those moments of quick change, instantly recallable. extensible with usb and midi and cv input.

Kraftwerk Residency at MOMA New York & Original Autobahn Video

Kraftwerk Autobahn rare original video 1973

YouTube Uploaded by TheSchurtenberger on Jun 13, 2009

via Wikipedia:
"The instrumentation used on the song's 1974 recording was highly innovative at the time and is notable for the significant influence it had on many subsequent genres of electronic popular and dance music. Notable aspects of the arrangement included:

Electronic percussion pads, played by Wolfgang Flür.
Use of a classic 'Moog bass' sound to play the bass line, playing an octave riff with added analogue echo.
Liberal use of phasing on synths to play the chords.
Use of a vocoder to process some of the vocals.
Use of the so-called 'motorik' 4/4 drum beat in the song's final section.

The arrangement also included acoustic elements such as guitar and flute."

"Over eight consecutive nights, MoMA presents a chronological exploration of the sonic and visual experiments of Kraftwerk with a live presentation of their complete repertoire in the Museum's Marron Atrium. Each evening consists of a live performance and 3-D visualization of one of Kraftwerk's studio albums—Autobahn (1974), Radio-Activity (1975), Trans-Europe Express (1977), The Man-Machine (1978), Computer World (1981), Techno Pop (1986), The Mix (1991), and Tour de France (2003)—in the order of their release. Kraftwerk will follow each evening’s album performance with additional compositions from their catalog, all adapted specifically for this exhibition. This reinterpretation showcases Kraftwerk’s historical contributions to and contemporary influence on global sound and image culture."

Glitch, a film about circuit bending

YouTube Uploaded by Woozygulag on Jun 7, 2010

"Part [1-3] of my graduate film made for my degree at the Atrium (University of Glamorgan) Glitch is a film about circuit bending. Made by Myself and a small crew, featuring circuit bending talent from up and down the country. When I started this project I wanted to incorporate video bending into the film. I had no way to do this and found no one who could help me to do it before the deadline. For some reason one of my capture files corrupted... Not only did it corrupt but it mixed itself with footage from a previous shoot, so I incorporated it into the film. I like to think that there is a wizard in my computer. His name is Dr Tiddler and he loves the pussy."

Three One Synth Releases From Important Records - Alessandro Cortini (Buchla), Eliane Radique (ARP 2500), & ELEH (Serge)

Important Records wrote in to let us know they have three new releases showcasing one synth each.   Alessandro Cortini's "Forse2" was made entirely on the original Buchla Music Easel, Eliane Radique's Adnos I-III was composed with an ARP 2500, and ELEH features an 8 panel Serge modular wynthesizer.
Full details and links:

"-Alessandro Cortini’s “Forse 2” is now available. Made entirely on an original Buchla Music Easel, just like 'Forse 1' but with an entirely different mood to it.

This is a 2xLP and the second in a series of 3 releases we have planned with Alessandro. Hopefully the CD Box will be out early next year. A cassette for our sister label Cassauna is in the works too for his Synthi A explorations.

The Swarm by Atrium Instruments

video upload by DECIMA1

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Knob-For-Knob Functionality
We at Artium Instruments are committed to knob-for-knob functionality. Every feature of The Swarm is directly mapped to a knob, button, switch, or jack, ensuring effortless control. There's no need for menu-diving or complicated sequences of button presses to access features; everything is conveniently accessible at your fingertips.

Curated, Onboard Effects
With over a decade of experience in the effects industry, we have carefully curated a selection of effects that seamlessly complement the synth core. Unique to The Swarm is its capability to use the onboard effects with other equipment, allowing you to route external audio through the inputs on the back.

Plug and Play Functionality
The Swarm utilizes a USB-C MIDI host for simplicity and ease of use. Most modern class-compliant MIDI controllers with USB functionality should plug in and work immediately with zero setup. Additionally, The Swarm provides power to your controller, streamlining your setup process. For older controllers that only have DIN connections, a USB to DIN converter can be used to ensure compatibility. (These converters typically cost $10-20)

Quality Craftsmanship, Intentional Design
We've invested considerable thought into crafting the overall feel of the instrument. From the layout of the knobs to the choice of colors, artwork, and the weight of the enclosure, every detail has been considered. These details matter to us because we recognize that the connection a user forms with a piece of gear is almost as crucial in the creative process as the sounds it produces. We hope you can feel the love and passion we've poured into every aspect of The Swarm, from its sonic capabilities to its design aesthetics.

Open Source Platform
Artium desktop synths use an open source platform known as Axoloti or Ksoloti for development and implementation of its products. Click here for details on the open source platform being used.

SYNTH CORE

Oscillator
The Swarm features a SuperSaw oscillator with 8-note polyphony. This oscillator is composed of seven individual saw waves stacked on top of each other. The magic unfolds when you detune the waveforms by applying a frequency offset, resulting in one of the most massive synth sounds available.

Troika - Cloud, Kinetic Sculpture 2008

YouTube via MediaArtTube

"'Troika was commissioned by Artwise Curators to create a signature piece for the entrance of the new British Airways luxury lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5.

In response, we created 'Cloud', a five meter long digital sculpture whose surface is covered with 4638 flip-dots that can be individually addressed by a computer to animate the entire skin of the sculpture. Flip-dots were conventionally used in the 70s and 80s to create signs in train-stations and airports. By audibly flipping between black and silver, the flip-dots create mesmerizing waves as they chase across the surface of Cloud. Reflecting its surrounding colours, the mechanical mass is transformed into an organic form that appears to come alive, shimmering and flirting with the onlookers that pass by.

The sculpture is located in Terminal 5 in the atrium hall that leads to the British Airways First Class Lounges. The brief from British Airways was open and simple: create a signature piece that marks the entrance to the First Class Lounges and signifies the transition between the busy shopping floor and the calm and serenity of the lounges. Working from the idea of clouds and the contrast between the busy, hectic airport experience and the calm, luminous and ethereal world that we discover as we fly through this dense layer we came up with the basic metaphor, atmosphere and form of the installation. Another one of our inspirations came from the old electromagnetic flip-dots that were used in railway and airport signs from the mid 70s. Those signs, with their characteristic flicking noise that instantly invokes the idea of travel, represent to us a golden age of technology when analogue and digital started to merge. The indicators, dots that flip from one side to the other with an electric impulse have a fantastic materiality, a physical and tactile quality that more modern technologies often lack, being de-materialised into the virtual.

We dreamt of applying this redundant technology to our sculpture, to create a sort of living organism, a cloud that we could animate, exploring the aesthetic potential of the flip-dots. As the flip-dots flick we are instantly reminded of rippling water, of the mesmerizing movements of snakes and school of fish. For to accentuate this feeling we chose to create one side of the dots as silver mirrors emulating the organic movements of.' ( source: Troika web-site)
