Rhyme and Rebus

video upload by Robin Rimbaud-Scanner

"One small synthesiser. One guitar pedal.
Recorded in a wooden fisherman’s hut in Captiva, Florida.
As simple as that, at heart.

Back in 2017, I spent six weeks on this isolated island, at the invitation of the Robert Rauschenberg Residency. This is an interdisciplinary artists' residency programme, based on Rauschenberg's belief that art can change the world, nurture and facilitate experimentation, collaboration and innovation.

In the morning, I worked on a book I’ve been writing, then in the afternoon I recorded, every day, for the duration. The results are this series of serene and fluid soundscapes, where I used only the Kilpatrick Phenol synth and an Eventide H9 effects pedal.

The surrounding landscape remains crucial, with osprey, woodpeckers and pelicans accompanying some pieces. Life literally outside the window!

It’s a muted, mediative collection of works, cosy, shimmering and hypnotic. Two pulsing dubbed out works take a darker grainy direction, but overall, it’s an ambient, sunlit bliss-out session.

This was filmed on a GoPro camera in Captiva Florida in March 2017

Weatherstruck | Ensoniq EPS sampler downtempo electronic somberwave

video upload by MIDERA

"Today, I traded something small (Polyend Tracker) for something big (Ensoniq EPS). I kind of don't know what I was thinking. I knew I was overwhelmed with gear. But I've been debating buying an Ensoniq Mirage again and wondered if this (EPS) would suffice. I'm kind of thinking... yeah, maybe. It's doing everything I felt I did with the Mirage, only in an easier way. It's a higher bitrate, but it's still pretty chunky. I'm liking it. This is after digging around on it for one night, so I don't know if what I did sounds any good. I guess I like it, so that's good enough for me. I have no disks to save the sounds on, so I think this will have to say goodbye and be gone forever.

Still - I'm pretty impressed. The Ensoniq EPS gets dumped on. Not as much character as the Mirage, not as good as the EPS16 plus, and definitely not as good as the ASR10. To me, it seems like it's actually the worst one of the bunch. In no way did I find anyone recommending the EPS over the others mentioned above.

Well, I like it. It was pretty easy to make this and I think it's got some character, in a very similar way as the Mirage. One thing that didn't make sense was that it appears to be stereo based on the outputs, but I'm not sure it actually is.

Digital Synthesizer - PSS RETROWAVE SYNTH JAM (Yamaha PSS470, Eventide H3000b)

video upload by digital synthesizer

"All sounds except percussion are recorded directly from Yamaha PSS 470, it's an FM synth from the 90s.
In the send, the shimmer is from Eventide H3000b. I can sell this instrumental in .als for a lot of money. Have a great day everyone!"

Sequential Prophet 10 | The Disaster. An FX-soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"This whole sequence of sounds just... was not good. I actually made part 2 first, but then started over and that's what you hear first. Part 1 I just got up and shut it down. But hey - maybe you'll find something inviting and interesting in this moor.

It's all about timbres and how you play them. Interesting as a follow-up to Prophet 5 - How does the Poly-Mod Work?

DSI Prophet 08 (the better one) night time melodies

video upload by MIDERA

"I had no interest in recording anything tonight, but I feel like any time I sit down with the DSI Prophet 08, I enjoy it, so I recorded this. Sorry about the crackling. I don't know what it is about the P08, but it seems to distort more easily than other synths. Maybe I just have the levels all wrong.

I had been comparing the P08 to the P10, side by side, and I still have to say to myself 'WTF - I like the P08 more.' In almost every sound I create, the P08 feels more melodic. I don't get it. There's something almost 'boring' in the P10. Or maybe it can just go too wild at the 'same settings'? I don't know what it is, I am sure the P08 is more tame so in a way it more easily makes things sound pleasant. I can usually get them super close (which speaks highly to the P08 I think).

Also - I call it the 'better one' because I absolutely hated the REV2, after owning it once and borrowing it from a friend to compare to the P08. I concluded that the P08 was better then. And it's still one of the best synths I have. I like it more than the P10, PE, P12 (easily), Jupiter 6... Not sure about the Chroma Polaris, which itself is wild, but in a more "Bladerunner" sort of way.

On a personal note - I'm one week into being bald. It's weird. Most people don't say a word and I wonder 'Does that mean they think it looks terrible or does nobody care?' One person did stop me to say they thought I looked good, but I felt like maybe they said that just to be kind, knowing I must feel pretty bad otherwise. Truthfully, it's hard to get used to. I think 'great, I'm just another bald dude...' and think a bit less of myself, but part of me loves the idea of not having to think about my hair after I have a hat on or bike somewhere.

And finally, today I got my final gift from my mom. It was new indoor slippers. She bought me a pair about 10 years ago and I wore them beyond the point that they had holes in the soles. I asked her for a new pair for christmas, but she didn't make it to then, and so I bought myself a pair. I'm wearing them now. It will be sad to throw the old pair out, but I should lay them to rest. They've served me well.

Fissure 💔 (Hapax 2.0 // Perfourmer Mk2 + H9 + Pill // TR6S // LXR02 // JU06 + Deco v2)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"February 2024, back to the 2-Minute format! (well actually it was a 4:30 jam with a bridge, an outro with different chords etc. but had to justify a bit the name of the channel I think 😅)

This jam is built around a 10-step pattern from the Hapax sequencing the Perfourmer (through the H9 reverb and Pill ducking pedal, triggered by a GATE track from the Hapax). To make this 10-step pattern which drives the whole track sound a bit more complex, I made it play with 3 different voices of the Perfourmer (this is one of the main reasons I bought a Perfourmer a few years ago!). Hence each note is playing a voice with a different oscillator. So it's a 10-step sequence where the oscillators are being played in round robin mode each 3 notes. To make it even more spicy, I also used the Hapax's real-time RANDOMIZER MIDI effect which is transposing some notes randomly!

For the PERCUSSIVE parts, we are in a more classic mode with the main DRUMS being played by the TR-6S and the secondary DRUMS by the LXR-02 (both still sequenced by the Hapax).

And the BASS, is being played by the JU-06A through the DECO v2 pedal."

Sequential Take 5 with No FX

video upload by hvegel

"a raw and pure Take 5. often i find myself drowning a lot of my patches in my marvellous Blackhole pedal (they're meant to swim when you have something as lush as that!), yet i still marvel at the raw sound of this little mighty synthesiser. so why not showcase it? no internal FX (despite having quite a good reverb on deck) nor any external FX (or processing for that matter). the patches are my own, and naturally will be finishing an (ambient leaning) sound pack for you to download and ingest into your machine."

5min of Ambient, Generative Chill with Quasimidi Sirius

video upload by

"I've put the Quasimidi Sirius up for sale to help fund some new gear, so time to use it a bit before it sells!

I love the AudioModern 'Riffer' app for making ambient, ever-changing, generative music!

In this setup, it's sequencing 3 synth tracks inside the Sirius, which are all being routed into the Eventide H90 Pedal for some delay and loads of reverb!

Whatever kind of music you are making - KEEP IT UP, Friends!
Don't stop making *YOUR MUSIC*!!

House 90 🎹 (Hapax sequencer // JD08 // 0Coast + Apocalypse + H9 // Nymphes + Julianna + Pill // S1)

video upload by 2-Minute Warning

"The Squarp Hapax is probably one of the most powerful hardware sequencer I've used 🤩 In this video it's at the heart of the setup, sequencing the Roland JD-08 (synth & piano chords), the Make Noise 0-Coast (tonal kick) and the Dreadbox Nymphes (pulsing bass). The Roland S-1 is being played in real-time on the bridge part.

I used a lot of features of the Hapax in this video:
- The Euclid and Swing midi effects for the synth and piano chords
- The conditional trigs to add fills etc., chance (probability for some notes to play or not) and roll
- CC automation, used to modulate the cutoff, noise oscillator on the bassline played by the Nymphes
- CV modulation on the 0-Coast (you can see the signals being sent by the red/green connectors at the back of the Hapax)
- The transpose within scale feature, where with one track (track 16), you can transpose in real time - or record the transpositions (I used both here) - all the patterns playing on the other tracks.

* Hardware used *

// SYNTH & PIANO CHORDS:
- Roland JD-08 (digital 128-voice, bi-timbral synth)

// TONAL KICK:
- Make Noise 0-Coast + Death by Audio Apocalypse (fuzz pedal) + Eventide H9 Max (bandpass delay)

// BASS:
- Dreadbox Nymphes (6-voice analog synth) + Walrus Audio Julianna (analog chorus/vibrato) + Pill (analog ducking pedal)

// LEAD:
- Roland S-1 (4-voice digital synth, inspired by the famous mono synth SH-101)

// SEQUENCER:
- Squarp Hapax (dual-project sequencer, 16 tracks per project, 8 patterns per track, 8 effects per track, algorithmic tools, MIDI, CV, etc.)"
