Unlock Amazing Rhythms with Cheap Foot Pedals — 2-Minute How-To

video upload by Saul Stokes

https://buymeacoffee.com/saulstokes/e...

Combining multiple mono delays is not something many people do. Yet, it’s an amazing way to create rhythmic structure that you won’t get any other way. Any delay pedals will work. I prefer to use a mono signal chain to keep things from getting too complex. This concept does work in a DAW—just make sure you turn off tempo sync.

1. Create a simple rhythm. In this quick tutorial, I made a very bland white noise hi-hat loop.

2. Using the first delay pedal, slowly move the repeat knob until you find an interesting rhythmic structure. Make sure you keep the level of repeats down so the rhythm doesn’t get too wet.

3. For the second delay pedal, turn the time knob very slowly. As you do this, you’ll hear moments when the two delays start to play off each other, creating something new and exciting. This works great when the first delay is just slightly off-tempo.

4. As an extra, I added a phaser, which adds a beautiful smeared wash to the rhythm. The phaser's cycle actually adds a third sweeping rhythm.

4. Keep tweaking the repeat and time knobs of each delay—you’ll continually find new rhythmic structures. Go slowly, as there are hidden rhythms that will emerge that you might otherwise miss.

4. Why can't you use one stereo delay to achieve the same thing? It's simple because using two delays gives you two clocks, and the timing will never be perfect. The result is something that has a human characteristic rather than being stiff and perfect.

If you're strapped for cash, look for older pedals on Craigslist or eBay. The phaser in this tutorial was actually found at Goodwill. The Line 6 was purchased for $40 on Craigslist, and the Oceans 11 can often be found very inexpensively.
The cheaper the effect, the better!

Tranquil Micro Worlds & Ambient Electronica | Live Music + Microscopic Creatures

video upload by Saul Stokes

On this episode of Frequensea, I build a live electronic track to coincide with microscopic videography created by Geoffrey Attardo, Ph.D. Geoffrey is an Associate Professor at the Department of Entomology and Nematology at UC Davis in California. Halfway through the performance, I talk about how the videos were made and what Wetland they are from, along with a short conversation about some older musical gear that found new life in my studio.

First of August (OXI ONE MkII, opsix, multi/poly, wavestate)

video upload by Alec Sea

"First of August was performed live using the Oxi One MkII sequencer, Korg opsix, multi/poly and wavestate synthesizers and Roland TR-6S drum machine. The FM e-piano from opsix is running into the Line 6 HX ONE and Meris Mercury X in series for a lovely wash of reverb. The TR-6S is running into the UAFX Golden in Percussion Plate mode. Multi/poly is using the built in effects. Wavestate is a dry bass sound. There is no post-processing."

NAMM 22: A Chat With Tom Oberheim

video upload by sonicstate

"Given the opportunity to talk to one of the synthesizer industries' legends, we jumped at the chance. T om Oberheim has been making synthesizers since the 1970's and is responsible for a lot of the great sounds we've heard over the years from his classic instruments.

Its been an eventful few years for Oberheim, Tom got his brand name back, thanks to the efforts of Marcus Ryle (Line 6 founder) and together with the team at Sequential ahve now producer the OB-X8 which is a monster of a synth that encompasses these essence of much of the Oberheim range.

We had a chat on the booth.

Moog Grandmother - Custom Patches run through HX Stomp, BlueSky and Electro Harmonix Superego

video upload by Hollo Digi Design

"Custom patches from my Grandmother, as well as experimental routing using the Line 6 HX Stomp, Strymon BlueSky and Electro Harmonix Superego. FYI, first patch fades in. More detail below.

Detail:
All of these sounds are just snips from full experimental jams performed live. Slight compression via the very transparent FMR RNC 1773 is present, and all sounds were recorded direct into a Zoom H6 via various routing methods through a Mackie desk. No post processing or mastering was used (apologies on level changes etc.).

As a side note, I've sold the EH Superego since recording these sounds. You can hear it where a harmonising drone is present. Although I do miss it, I now have sustain patches ready to go on the HX Stomp, plus the sustained reverb on my newly acquired NightSky (neither of which you hear in this video).

"Great little USB audio interface w midi. Guitar input and 2 mic inputs w phantom power for condenser mics. Works with Line 6 Pod Farm program. Software has all kinds of guitar and vocal effect and a mixer to control the inputs. The second meter has a tint crack that is barely visible. Work great. Little bit of scratchy noise when moving pots. A little cleaner would do the trick."
