"An in-depth look at how the sound of the Korg OPSIX compares with an original DxX7 from 1983. In short, it stacks up well. It will never be identical as it has different envelope shapes (4 part level and rate compared with standard ADSR) but for most of us its close enough. I've loaded the original DX7 patch bank into the OPSIX and with just a few tweaks can get them almost identical on the fly. Given time they could be closer."

"I have always been curious about the new line from Korg, including the OpSix, Wavestate, and Modwave, but I've never had the chance to try one in person.
A friend of mine came to the rescue, and he lent me his OpSix (while he got the chance to keep my Digitone, a sort of FM Exchange Program, if you will).
At first, I wasn't impressed by the raw sound quality.
Many of the FX are so so, the basic filters are plain out garbage, and the general accessibility is still not my favorite, especially coming from a PRO3 or the aforementioned Digitone.
BUT, I decided, as my usual, to just completely MISUSE the instrument, so I tried to create a 'modular' patch, to let the Poly-6 filter shine, move stuff with LFO, granularize with the more than welcome FX, and in the end have fun. I can't say I am ready to change my (mostly negative) opinion on the instrument, but it sure has some sweet spots here and there, and I'd like to share them with you.

Fun with the Korg opsix - Way more flexible than the Yamaha DX-7

"A video playing a single preset of the Korg opsix. The little opsix is much more than the traditional DX-Series FM from Yamaha. The basic sound is maybe a little different, maybe because of different DAC converters, but the Korg offers incredible programming possibilities beyond the original DX sound engine. The interface is not perfect, but specially the sliders for operator level and the rotary knobs for operator frequency allow for a practical, fast and fun way of editing the sounds."

"Inspired by a dream I recently had.

Hello. It's been a while. Last year was tough, but I am back after a long focus on my mental and physical health.

Recently picked up a Korg Opsix and I have found it to be a sound design dream. The open architecture of the operators creates a semi-modular routing environment, where you can route any oscillator to any oscillator, including themselves for feedback. Because of this and the ability to use tuned comb filters, wave shapers, filters, and other sound shapers as operators, you can take the Opsix beyond FM into other areas such as physical modeling and additive synthesis.

This is a piece heavily utilizing FM feedback (to create textured pads and beds of noise) and physical modeling (karplus strong).

"Korg have just dropped version 2.0 firmware for the opsix. The headline feature is surely the addition of the new "Effect" operator mode which allows you convert an operator into a one of ten different fx units within your patch - and it's fantastic.

New KORG DX7 - the opsix

This one was spotted and sent in via Soviet Space Child.

opsix and is 6 Operator FM synth like the DX7. You can count 32 algorithms on the right panel.

This isn't too far fetched considering KORG made the Volca FM.

I'd love a desktop version myself.

Update: Note the knobs and sliders on the left. One of the things that makes the Volca FM, and Yamaha DX-200 for that matter, is that they control multiple parameters at the same time. Hopefully Korg will put some thought into them. The abilith to assign the individual knobs and sliders to various parameters would be a plus.
