Ian Helliwell's Tone Generation

[Note: I'm not seeing how to skip episodes in the player above aside from sliding the progress bar to the end to get to the next one.]

You might remember Ian Helliwell mentioned in previous posts on the site here, including his book Tape Leaders. Atomic Shadow wrote in to let us know about his 34-part history of electronic music titled Tone Generation [player above/episode list below], as well has his work on SoundCloud.

The following is a short blurb from his website, http://www.ianhelliwell.co.uk:

"Leaving school and full time education aged 16 armed with six O-levels, Ian is a self-taught and self-funded multi-media artist, working in music, film, animation, analogue electronics, instrument building, collage, installations, live performance, light show projection, graphic design, writing and film programming.

Ian coined the term ‘creative soldering’ to best define his ‘intuitive electronics’ approach, and since the 1990s he has designed and built a unique range of electronic tone generating machines – Hellitrons and Hellisizers – which he uses to realise his compositions."

"The Tone Generation is Ian's audio series looking at the early period of electronic music history, focussing on experimental tracks mostly drawn from his CD and record collection.

"Feliz 2022 a todos!

A primeira synth jam do ano traz uma groovebox que eu tenho há mais de um ano e ainda não consegui realmente me dedicar a ela, a Elektron Model Cycles! Trata-se de um instrumento com algumas máquinas de timbres FM, oferecendo bateria, percussão, leads, baixos, pads e etc. Seguindo a tradição da Elektron , a Cycles tem um sequenciador muito poderoso e recursos incríveis para performance em tempo real.

Está nos planos mostrar mais a Cycles por aqui.

Moving On

"The initial idea for this track is that it uses a 4 chord progression centered around the note E to give the music some variation. The chords are Em, C, C#m and D Major Add 9. I recorded several takes last week with a solo on the Minimoog but I was never satisfied or could not get the solo right. Last week I also got the Boss SY-200 Synthesizer pedal for I was curious what it could do. After using it a week I have got mixed feelings on the pedal but maybe I have got to explore it a little bit more. I am not a big fan of using guitars in electronic music, but in this video I use it for the solo part. It's not perfect but I wanted to get this track out and move on with other things, hence the title.

Anyways, the track starts with a bass on the Synthesizers.com, percussive noise from the Korg ARP Odyssey and a sequence from the Tom Oberheim SEM. After that sequences are added from the Weston Precision Audio PAO and Verbos Harmonic Oscillator Eurorack modules, the DSI Mopho, the Moog Prodigy and the Synthesizers.com Modular. The strings are from the Roland JD-800. The guitar solo is performed on a Gibson Les Paul Studio through the Boss SY-200 pedal with some 'Pat Metheny like' sound. Hope you will like it.

"noodling around on a few of the presets, some of which are in fully realized form, while others need work. playing em for a good length of time, especially with a backbeat, is always a good indicator of where they're at, how they feel to play, how they sound in a mix etc. Figured I'd post a few of these periodically.

The EM-26 serves just as well as a stand alone vocoder as it does as a brilliant string synthesizer. the option to input a carrier frequency means you are able to choose from either the on boards carrier (vocoder signal) or another synthesizer in your studio.

The mic preamp is something to be excited about and the on-board chorus is absolutely amazing. You are able to proccess external sounds (such as a drum machine) through this section to add chorus or distortion without even engaging the vocoder which yeilds awesome effects."
