Being Boiled again - this time with added metronome

Omenie Synth Collection on Raspberry Pi Synth

"Boy oh boy you need to REALLY like the old Human League to survive a subscription to this channel ...

Here is Being boiled yet again, this time being used to demonstrate the improvements in the metronome over the last 24 hours.

First off, the blue pulse that slides along the 32 beats steps has got way smoother and is now in that 'Nails like Butter (™)' zone.

Second, the brightness of the metronome is now under the control of the sequencer. So any time you want a bright metronome, just command it to be brightened. Brightening is instant, fading is IIRd for that 'Smooother than Galaxy Caramel' effect.

And thirdly, and I think finally, the LEDs (or 'LEDs' if you insist) fade-out at a rate driven by the current BPM, in an attempt to maximize the ability to read the beat no matter how fast or slow your track is moving along.

I do have square and round LEDs available, but I much prefer the square ones, you get a giant bar of colour and the ONE just shouts at you."

Omenie Synth Collection : On-screen metronome

Published on Aug 24, 2015 Pi Synth

"A feature that went in today - an on-screen metronome, rendered underneath the waves display. This makes the system usable on tracks that kick off without drumming, or in fact those with only silence coming out of the sequencer. The metronome lets a player understand the tempo, where the 1-2-3 and 4 beats are, and very much increases the usability of the synth collection in a perfomance-plus-sequencer setting."

Omenie Synth Collection on a Raspberry Pi Model A

Published on Aug 19, 2015 Pi Synth

"7 simultaneous synths - 3 Virtual Analog (VAsynth), 2 sample replay (SRsynth) and 2 wavetable trajectory (WTsynth) - are sequenced to play back one of Ron's finest tunes. The individual instruments are walked through first by whipping through MIDI channels and bashing keys before the sequence is launched.

There is one minor bit of cheating - or is it an advanced feature? I have not written the sequencing language description of this tune yet, so I exploit the 'launch MIDI grab' feature whereby the sequencing program initializes all the instruments, sets level and pan, sets the preset for each MIDI channel, then fires previously-captured MIDI down the throat of the synthesizer service, which deals with distributing MIDI packets to the right synth.

And I should stress - the computer that is synthesizing all these instruments, and rendering the full-screen 1280x720 waveform display, AND dealing with the multiple MIDI keyboards costs $20."

"This is the first time Jordan Rudess, best known as the keyboardist for Dream Theater, has released a complete set of his exclusive sounds to the public. Jordantron will turn your iPad into the grandest and most epic sounding instrument ever!

Developed for Wizdom Music by Omenie, UK-based mellotron specialists, Jordantron features :
• 57 sampled stereo instruments, 940MB of samples
• 4 octave samples per voice, 6 playable octaves
• Voices categorized by 'velocity sensitive', 'leads', 'orchestral / choral', 'pads' and 'strings'
• Velocity sensitivity on selected voices
• Decay tails on selected voices
• Octave shift keys to extend range of on-screen keyboard
• 'Half-speed' tape mode
• 12 programmable chord pads
• Warm, lush stereo reverb
• 32 'VOICEBANKs' holding voice, reverb and ABC blend settings for instant retrieval
• Giant 'Jordan-style' whole octave divebombs (configurable as whole tone or whole octave downshift)
• Support for multiple simultaneous instruments via MIDI
'Oscillotron' waveform display

First and foremost, this is a giant sample collection wrapped in its own playable instrument, designed for live and studio use with MIDI control. Jordantron allows its two internal Tron engines to be controlled by a pair of external class-compliant MIDI keyboards for maximum performance flexibility, one controlling the blendable 'ABCtron', the other controlling the 'Dtron' which is usually dedicated to chord pads. A flexible MIDI response allows VOICEBANKs to be retrieved using MIDI Program Change, so the iPad screen never needs to be touched during performance."

"I was asked about demos for various voices today, and figured I ought to aim to get something up here that illustrates every sound in the various voice packs, all playing the same thing. 'What to play?' I asked myself. Well, since Paul McCartney did once call me on the phone, why not use his most iconic mellotron tune?

So here we are - the first in a series of a few, the Sopranotron doing some Strawberry stuff over all 15 voices. Enjoy!

And next time I will film it after dark to get the reflections minimized."

iTunes: Sopranotron - Omenie Limited

"The first dedicated 'Virtual Soprano' instrument for iPad - add soaring operatic soprano tones to your recordings, or take a pitch-perfect Virtual Soprano on stage with you!

Here by popular demand is Omenie's M3000 HD 'English Soprano' library, provided as a standalone instrument. Caitlin Downie, gifted soprano and national treasure, has been painstakingly recorded and assembled into a huge vocal collection. 525 different samples, 15 different voices, with chromatic sampling over the M3000's 35-note range, and note stretching below and above the range to deliver 5 octaves in total.

3 distinct vowel vocalizations, 'soft' voices, 'forte' voices with huge projection and vibrato, staccato vowels and 3 different ensemble voices are provided. Two different playable instruments are available at the same time, one blended from a selection 3 of the 15 voices ('A/B/C'), the other a single voice ('D'). The 'D' voice may be assigned to programmable chord pads, or the two instruments may be played independently via class-compliant MIDI keyboards. 64 programmable 'Voicebanks' allow popular selections of voices to be saved and restored immediately for recording or performance.

Virtual MIDI on 2 separate channels and AudioBus support make Sopranotron a very flexible and powerful instument for adding vocal sparkle to recordings or live performances."

Mellotronics M3000 HD - Clare Lindley Violin Collection

Published on Mar 26, 2014 Pi Synth·36 videos

"Clare Lindley, ferocious and fabulous fiddler with Stackridge, showcases her mellower classical side in this glorious, rich and nuanced collection of voices for the M3000. Recorded and engineered in Bath at the studio of her bandmate Glenn Tommey, the Clare Lindley Violin Collection is a unique collection of string sounds, and is the first time a large set of 35 semitone mellotron tapes has been created around a single artist's performances.

By recording everything in a single, marathon session, we have maintained excellent tonal consistency of sound between the 7 unique voices, which are also provided pre-mixed as 3 'ensemble' voices to provide 10 voices in total.

As is traditional, the test tune is LJ Rich's wonderful '30 Shades of Tron', the official M3000 HD theme tune. Movement between AB and C is happening during 'Oscillotron' mode (when the touch rotary control is off-screen) by manipulating the the Mod wheel on the attached MIDI keyboard. ABC tron is moving betwen Pizzicato, Spiccato and the 'soft, no vibrato Arco' voices, Tron D plays 'Ensemble1', which is a blend of 2 different 'soft, no vibrato Arco' voices, and has a remarkable French Horn / Colliery Brass kind of sound. The very soft attacks lead to a surprisingly non-violin sound, which forms beautiful low-level beds underneath just about anything, and the surprising nature of this particular voice was a real bonus, discovered only during mastering of the recordings.

The Clare Lindley Violin Collection is in Review with Apple, and will be available an in-app purchase for owners of Mellotronics M3000 HD running iOS 7 or above."

LJ Rich : "30 Shades of Tron" in TwoTron mode

Published on Nov 5, 2013 Pi Synth·27 videos

"The official M3000 50th Anniversary Theme tune - I really have got good value out of those $5 - played in TwoTron mode on version 2.72 on the App. The main melody line is played out of a combination of Piano, String Section and MKII Vibes, and Dtron doubles up the bass line an octave higher on MKII Clarinet, yielding a delicious combination of sounds, despite some rather ham-fisting tweaking of ABC and VOICE D LEVEL as it plays.

This is the final video insert for the iBook user manual. So now that can be published at last!"

M3000 50th Anniversary Edition User Manual - work in progress

Published on Sep 9, 2013 Pi Synth·23 videos

"Finally, the book the world has been eagerly awaiting since 1st September - 'M3000 50th Anniversary, the Missing Manual' - should be ready before October 1st, available in all territories as a free download from the iBook store.

Once again, the best $10 ever spent is on show - both the 'Thirty Shades of Tron" theme and the Ode to (Mellotronic) Progress feature strongly in the first couple of pages before digging into all of the how-to stuff.

And yes, the start of the embedded video needs to be somewhat more punchy and less glacial. It is a work-in-progress after all."

"LJ Rich goes Bach. As part of her 'internet work week' for BBC Click - when the poor girl worked her butt off for $29!!! - the ludicrously talented LJ Rich managed to not only write me a poem, but also write me the most delicious, Trontastic theme tune for the M3000 50th Anniversary Edition. This is quite wonderful, and it finds pride of place as the 'Intro media' in the soon-to-be-published M3000 User Manual, a free iBook that will be published the first week in October. Free. Canon (prog) rock

Published on Aug 16, 2013 Pi Synth·20 videos

"A wireless MIDI test of Pachelbel's little tune through the Mellotronics M3000 running on an iPad 2. A peculiarly metronomic version of Pachelbel's little tune, but recognisable.

Captured on an Elgato Game Capture HD at 108p, downsampled to 720p, as the Elgato's native 720p capture is pretty ugly.

This is a slightly newer version of the M3000 than is in the store for review, that one plays MIDI the same as this but doesn't show which keys are being played over MIDI. So as soon as we have Apple approval for the current version I will push this as an update. Inching is set to 1 here to get a slightly more bitey attack on the sax in particular."
