Plan B Model 28: Messing around with the new firmware
via the Plan B list:"All,
As I mentioned there's an upgrade of the Model 28 firmware in the works, I've had a chance to play around with it and I'd like to share that with you.
Although the 28 was designed as a master clock as opposed to a external frequency multiplier, the new firmware introduces a sync mode which increases the accuracy when processing external signals.
The following audio example has four tracks:
1) The first is Logic's software sampler (Xylophone) being driven by a M37 LFO which was converted to a midi quarter note string via an Analogue Systems Rs-200.
2) The second track, which appears in the right channel is analog patch playing quarter notes which is also driven by the same clock as the software synth in track 1, once it was recorded by Logic - so no M28 in the mix yet.
3) The third track is appears in the left channel and is an octave up from track 2, and is driven by the M28 quarter note output which is being paced by the same recorded clock as track 2.
4) The forth track, the ring modulated thuddy one - is in both channels and is the M28's serial output being driven by a M24 random voltage that is selecting whether a 1/4, 1/8 or 1/8 trip is being passed to the output.
The first thing you hear is the software synth, then track two fades in the right channel, followed by track 3 on the right and finally the random serial output with the thuddy beats.

One of our beta testers, Don Kim, did another sample recently:

his comments:
'It synced to midi notes much better than before [without the update] that freakout that used to happen while it was trying to find the sync. It just seems to take a measure and it syncs. I added some more fun by changing the notes it was syncing to. Simple polyrhythmic type stuff. 3 tracks of M28 running 3-5 envelopes. two voices using the midi click notes to show where the clock is (if you can't figure which ones, then I think it's syncing well). Also added a couple drum machine tracks using Logic as the master midi clock just to see how it all syncs with external gear.'"

Controller Unlocks Effects in Serato ITCH Software for Expressive Performance
Cumberland, R.I. (Oct. 2, 2009) – Numark, the world’s leading manufacturer of DJ technology, announces NSFX, an effects controller for use with the company’s NS7 premium software-performance controller. Numark developed NS7 and NSFX in strategic partnership with software developer Serato. NSFX will make its worldwide debut at Numark’s stand, E10, during the 2009 BPM show, October 3 and 4, 2009 at Birmingham, U.K.’s National Exhibition Centre.
NS7 DJs can now take advantage of Serato ITCH’s effects capabilities with NSFX. DJs attach NSFX to NS7’s integrated laptop stand for convenient access to effects controls. Designed to match the high-quality fit and finish of NS7, NSFX delivers the same robust, professional feel that NS7 users have grown accustomed to. Because Numark designed NSFX in collaboration with Serato, it is instantly compatible with ITCH. All parameter controls are intelligently pre-mapped and no software-driver installation is needed so DJs literally plug and play with NSFX. Club DJs will appreciate NSFX’s light-up controls that indicate each control’s setting and/or status for visual feedback in virtually any lighting environment.
“Serato and Numark have worked closely to make sure that the integration between NS7, NSFX and ITCH remains as seamless as it always has been,” said Adam Cohen, Director of Business Development, Numark. “We think both existing and future NS7 owners will be thrilled by the extended functionality that NSFX provides.”
NSFX will be available from musical instrument and DJ retailers Q4, 2009.
About NS7
NS7 is a complete computer-performance solution for cutting-edge DJs. It advances the art of performing with software, delivering the feel of motorized, adjustable-torque, aluminum turntable platters complete with vinyl, slipmats and 45 RPM adapters while offering Strip Search (patent pending) virtual-needle drop controls and a host of other innovative features. Separating the two turntable decks is a premium DJ mixer with replaceable, digital VCA crossfader and line faders, firm, rubberized knobs, rugged switches and buttons.
DJs will not only be impressed by NS7’s feel, but also its precision control. Numark and Serato developed a communication protocol for communication between NS7 and the computer that sends MIDI data over a single USB cable at more than ten times the standard resolution. The result is extremely high-resolution control with full MIDI compliance. As a result, NS7 can also work with most other popular DJ software packages.
NS7 contains a high-quality, 24-bit digital audio interface with mic/line input and headphone and system outputs. A single USB cable carries all audio and control data between NS7 and the computer for simplicity of system configuration and minimal setup time. Professional DJs will find NS7 to be built to outstanding levels of quality. Its heavy gauge metal housing and components have all been designed for durability on stage and reliability under the punishing conditions of the road.
Serato™ is a trademark of Serato Audio Research."
