Pearl Syncussion SY1 Drum Synthesizer

via this auction

"It will make the deepest kicks, the baddest snares and the nicest analog bells that you will hear in your life. Just google for some sound samples. Especially the Aldo's Syncussion sound pack.

Tons of users over its existence those singing its praises loudest have been Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert. Back in the day it made the pppeeewww on 9000 disco records and was used heavily by Human League and many other synth pop and electro bands of the era.

Trigger with drum machines or for the full feature set rock out on the velocity sensitive toms. It is PERFECTLY functional. Both channels. No missing sliders or switches like you usually see. Give it time 5-10 minutes to warm up though like all vintage analog gear."

the Mini Modular Maiden Voyage

YouTube via organfairy — April 22, 2010 — "Last winter I made a mini modular synthesizer and made a series of videos showing the building process.

Now it's time to actually play something with it and therefore I have created this video. The style is a bit more experimental compared to what I normally play. But the idea is to demonstrate some of the things this little collection of boxes can do.

Everything is played on the modular synthesizer and the polyphonic mini organ showed in the video. The sound was recorded in seven tracks so it could be performed live with seven of these sets and seven people.
The sound has not been processed in any way during mixing except for level adjustment and panning."

Korg Micro X part 2

YouTube via kennykeyboard — April 22, 2010 — "a bit more variety in timbres with the petite digital synth. Tweaking the knobs produced some pleasant results at times. A phat saw bass gives way to a grunge solo and then strings gone flaky and on to totally outer space. The cat wants in on the electric piano setting"

Prophet 8 and Little Phatty

kennykeyboard — April 22, 2010 — "more noodling around with both analog synths. A whistly lead sound is used for that cell phone tune and then I grind up some Moog Bass. The prophet has a squeaky mono sound and then some of the usual strings and brass pads. The cat listens in on the outdoors segment."

NeoKitsch - Modern Circus Music for Accordion and Theremin

YouTube via NeoKitschMusic — April 22, 2010 — "As a result of another genre project commissioned for NeoKitsch, the circus album offers a piece for accordion and theremin. Danny Hahn plays his composition with the Moog Etherwave Theremin a the NeoKitsch studio."

"1983" by TSF

YouTube via TheSynthFreq — April 21, 2010 — "Hi. This is an "Italio Disco" style 80s composition written 04-21-10. I LOVE Italio Disco by the way. :)
Pardon the delay in the beginning of the video, I had to go around the camera to start the Motif sequencer. This song also needs some refining but it was great fun to write. I intended to write an 80s dance style composition and came up with this. I will add more to it soon. Got LOVE THE 80s!!

Synths used: D-50: strings Alpha Juno- Synth lead (original/new) + delay/echo DX-9: FM bass (preset) EMX-1: 80's track (new/original) Motif-6: ARP source for DX-9 CZ-5000: midi controller for Alpha Juno
PLEASE ENJOY :)

:) TSF and her synths."

Ultra Rare Crumar Toccata Synthesizer

via this auction

"Super rare 1980 Crumar Toccata synthesizer. This is a great Hammond clone. Crumar synthesizers were originally designed by Bob Moog. This is Italian made and very rare. You see a couple a year on Ebay... No shipping to Russia, Italy or India."

Search is only bringing up two previously posted here, one in 2007 and one in 2008.

Update via fanwander in the comments: "Just to make it clear for the blog. The statement "Crumar synthesizers were originally designed by Bob Moog" is wrong. Bob Moog was involved only in the concept (not the detailled engineering) of the Crumar Spirit. All other Crumar instruments from this time are original designs by the crumar engineers." More confirmations in the comments.

Small Signal Audio Design

This one popped up on the SDIY list.
"Small Signal Audio Design is a unique guide to the design of high-quality circuitry for preamplifiers, mixing consoles, and a host of other signal-processing devices. Learn to use inexpensive and readily available parts to obtain state-of-the-art performance in all the vital parameters of noise, distortion, crosstalk and so on. Focusing mainly on preamplifiers and mixers this practical handbook gives you an extensive repertoire of circuits that can be put together to make almost any type of audio system.

A resource packed full of valuable information, with virtually every page revealing nuggets of specialized knowledge never before published. Essential points of theory that bear on practical performance are lucidly and thoroughly explained, with the mathematics kept to an essential minimum. Douglas' background in design for manufacture ensures he keeps a wary eye on the cost of things. Includes a chapter on power-supplies, full of practical ways to keep both the ripple and the cost down, showing how to power everything.

Douglas wears his learning lightly, and this book features the engaging prose style familiar to readers of his other books The Audio Power Amplifier Design Handbook and Self on Audio. You will learn why mercury cables are not a good idea, the pitfalls of plating gold on copper, and what quotes from Star Trek have to do with PCB design.

*Provides an enormous amount of knowledge in one unique volume, making it an essential guide to design principles and practice in the wide are of small-signal audio

*Includes numerous circuit blocks with all component values given so you can build on them and easily adapt them to your own requirements

*Lavishly illustrated with diagrams and graphs, and full of practical measurements on real circuitry so you can be sure just how well it will perform

Learn how to:
* make amplifiers with apparently impossibly low noise
* design discrete circuitry that can handle enormous signals with vanishingly low distortion
* use humble low-gain transistors to make an amplifier with an input impedance of more than 50 Megohms
* transform the performance of low-cost-opamps, how to make filters with very low noise and distortion
* make incredibly accurate volume controls
* make a huge variety of audio equalisers
* make magnetic cartridge preamplifiers that have noise so low it is limited by basic physics
* sum, switch, clip, compress, and route audio signals

*Provides an enormous amount of knowledge in one unique volume, an essential guide to design principles and practice in the wide are of small-signal audio
*Includes numerous circuit blocks with all component values given so you can build on and easily adapt them to your own requirements

Wireless MIDI via OSC using Pianist Pro

Another step closer. Is this the first iPad instrument/synth app with native OSC support?
YouTube via MooCowMusic — April 21, 2010 — "New for Pianist Pro in the V1.2 update.

Control your DAW and hardware synths wirelessly via OSC with Pianist Pro. Use Pure Data (a free application for both OSX and Windows) on your PC to receive the OSC calls and translate them into MIDI messages to suit your setup.

Play your digital piano from the sofa, or even from another room...

For more information see our website at- http://moocowmusic.com"

via MooCowMusic:
"We've added OSC support so that you can use your iPad to control your DAW or hardware synths wirelessly. All you need to do is install a simple (and free) application called "Pure Data" onto a PC / Mac on the same wireless network as your iPad, and use the provided patch to convert the OSC messages sent by Pianist Pro into MIDI messages. Those MIDI messages can be recorded on your DAW, and control soft or hardware synthesisers. Pure Data patches are easily configured to suit your setup. Play your digital piano from your sofa, or even from another room!

We are just putting the finishing touches to this free update and hope to have it submitted to Apple in the next couple of days.

Another step closer. Is this the first iPad instrument/synth app with native OSC support?

The holy grail will be the ability to go directly from your iPad to your hardware synths for multi-track sequencing (with virtual sliders and knobs to control assignable parameters), along with the ability to sync your native iPad synths with your external gear, all, of course, wirelessly. The only way this will scale across multiple apps is if we have a new standard - here's hoping OSC becomes that standard.

Currently I'm aware of three manufacturers with hardware MIDI for the iPad:
Akai's SynthStation25
Line 6's MIDI Mobilizer
iConnectivity's iConnectMIDI
I'm not sure if any of these plan to use OSC. If you are watching, please look into this.

Currently I have my eye on iConnectMIDI. There's no mention of OSC, but if you look at the iPad/iPhone app icons on their website, you will see what looks like an icon for Pianist Pro.

BTW, I just created an OSC label. As you can imagine searching on OSC brought up a ton of posts mentioning oscillators rather than Open Sound Control. That said, I'm sure I'm missing a ton of OSC posts in the archives. If you spot any, comment in the post, or shot me an email and I'll update it.
