TinySID on a 16 bit PIC

"Ater successfully getting the TinySID library running on a PIC32 [1] some time ago, I recently wondered, if the 16 bit MCUs from Microchip would also be fast enough to run the code. It turned out, that they are, at least the 40 MIPS models (PIC24H and dsPIC33F).

A big hurdle is the (compared to the PIC32MX) small RAM on these chips. Since the SID tune must be loaded into RAM, only some small tunes will fit into the 8 kB of the MCU used on the Web Platform [2] I had at hand.

However, the source code [3] and binary [4] are available from Google Code. The PWM output is on IO7, and IO8 is used to switch the tune when pulled to GND.

Have fun,
Markus

Patternsketch - Online Audio Sequencer and Drum Machine

"Patternsketch is an HTML5 and Javascript audio sequencer and drum machine. With it, you can create audio patterns, play them back, adjust playback tempo, volume, and change the audio kit. You can also save, export, and collaborate with your friends.

Patternsketch is an excercise in imagining what browser based music tools could be, and an exploration in the possibilities of new web technologies. It was built with Javascript (no frameworks) and HTML5 (no flash).

The goal of this project was to create a tool that musicians and casual music fans could use to create music patterns and collaborate on rhythmic ideas with friends. We recognize the performance is currently unacceptable for serious use, but look forward to updates in browser technology to make tools like this a viable option for music lovers.

Patternsketch works best in Firefox and Chrome. For a technical look at the inner-workings, see our posts on how we made it."

More Venom In Your System M-Audio/Avid

YouTube via FlakeStick | February 13, 2011 |
follow-up to this post Update: video re-uploaded below.
"This is a second on-the-fly demo showing more patches from M-Audio's new synth, the Venom. This time around I'm messing w/ drum loops, a few more single patches, and a mulit-part song at the end of the video.

All original single patches in this vid are by me:
TuffRoller - a drum loop composed of two kits, plus a third controlled by the mod wheel. I'm messing w/ the Amplitude attack time.
Isol8r - A pseudo- electric piano pad thing.
JunoThis - I improved my Juno sounds w/ 1-osc and 1-sub-osc plus chorusing. A little vibrato to boot.
M-Pulser - A synth-orchestra hit w/ compression flattening it to bits.
ReichSynth - A beating pad sound inspired by the minimalist composer Steve Reich.
Salina - A beautiful arpeggio inspired by a Bedrock track.

And then there's the Multi-Part song I slopped-together w/ these four parts:
Drums - the TuffRoller patch
Arpeggio - Juno-This patch
Bass - the Deep Bass patch (see Demo I)
Synth Hits - the M-pulser patch

Recorded straight into Macbook w/ no additional effects - ALL VENOM."
