Mutable Instruments Shruthi-1 SMR-4 MKII

"Highly Customized Shruthi-1 With SMR-4 MKII Filter!

I have added several kickass modifications to this filter, including:

Bandpass Mode Selector Switch (2 bandpass modes and standard lowpass mode)
2/4 Pole Selector Switch (toggle between 12 & 24dB filter)
FM Mod Audio IN Selector Switch (use the Shruthi's Audio Input Jack to either send the audio signal into the filter or to modulate the filter cutoff)
Audio IN Potentiometer (adjust the audio input volume. Or, if using the audio in as an FM source, use the pot to adjust amount of modulation)
Audio OUT Potentiometer (adust the synths audio out volume. Very handy when switching between the 2 bandpass modes)
Internal FM Mod Potentiometer (same FM Mod as the Audio IN, but instead of using an outside source to modulate the cutoff, I have wired the pot to use the Shruthi's raw audio -pre-filter- to modulate the cutoff.
Red LED's added between the PCB's (because the more LED's the better, right!

I am a complete Mutable Junkie! I currently own the Ambika, MIDIpal and 2 other Shruthi's with an Anushri on the way! I've over indulged on Shruthi's and it's time to clear some space to make room for the Anushri.

Synth ships with latest firmware version (0.97). Patches 1-128 are the stock patches. I have also added custom patches to slots 129-268. These patches were found on the Mutable Instruments Forum as well as ones I have created."

"Here are some key features of this synth:

-All of your standard synth functions have dedicated knobs for them so you're not having to use a mouse or touchscreen to access controls. Included controls are VCO - Frequency, waveform, VCF - Cutoff, resonance, LFO - frequency, waveform, Envelope - attack, decay, sustain, release (ADSR).

-There is a dedicated analog type step sequencer with 16 steps for cool analog sequencing.

-additional parameters can be entered with the cursor keys, rotary encoder or joystick.

-The display is a generous full color LCD like a large iphone screen. Shown in the photo is the Mini Moog emulation.

-Like the Arturia plug-ins, this synth has models for the Mini Moog, CS 80, Arp 2600, and Jupiter 8 but also has some new even deeper synthesis options including a wavetable oscillator similar to the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS.

-The back panel connectivity is extremely versatile, with headphone out, stereo and mono outs, 8 channels of individual voice outputs, foot switch and pedal jacks, MIDI in, out and thru, and USB which allows for updates of software and firmware.

-The Origin also has two audio inputs so you can not only use it for a synth but you can process audio through it's filters and use it for audio effects.

-The programming is incredibly deep and versatile, allowing you to connect and program modules in the same way you would a modular synth, but with the added benefit of being able to save your patches!"

Square Beats for iOS

"Square Beats is a Sequencer, a Looper and a Sampler too... How many tracks available? How many bars available? As many as you need! Square Beats is really original. You create Squares. A Square contains 8 tracks and 3 to 16 Blocks (steps). You can assign an instrument to each Square (Visit the Shop for more instruments), or create your own ones (8 samples for an instrument). All the editing features are controlled by gestures. It is really hard for me to rate Square Beats because it depends on what you want to do with it... Let me explain... If you want to create a little sequence without complex melodies you can work very fast and have a lot of fun but if want to create a "real" song (3 minutes and melodies) it becomes much more complex... Why? Because a Square can contains only 8 notes, so you will have to create perhaps three or four Squares to create your melody for one bar and use the pitch feature. You can't set the volume of each Square tracks separately, so you will have to create perhaps two or three Squares for your rhythm track. At the end when you want to create your song structure it can become the hell... If the developer added a structure track which would allow you to move or copy an entire bar or a multiple selection gesture or a the possibility to group some square (easy to say...), Square Beats would be great for these two examples (and the AudioCopy Paste feature too). In conclusion it is really hard for me to rate it, because it really depends on what you want to do with it. For its originality, its great UI, if you want to have fun working on a simple sequence, Beat Square is Super App!"

Not a synth, but this is the sort of thing I hope to see on future hardware synths. It could be as simple as a indentation on the synth to rest the iPad on. The one thing for manufacturers to consider is how to connect to the iPad either via proprietary cable or via an extra set of MIDI Ins and Outs. If proprietary cable, it would be great if it could provide a charge to the iPad for long term use.  If you skip charging and a physical interface all together, bluetooth for wireless support could be an option as well.  You could then take the iPad off the dock and control the synth over wireless.
