"From the Gnome creator...

"'The Gnome started out as an instrument that wasn't going to do anything more than make the sound of wind - not like a flute, but real wind. Ssssshhhhew. That kind of wind, which could be played with a little vinyl controller strip that was part of it. The Gnome was one of those things that just grew. After the instrument that did the wind sound was done, it became pretty apparent that you could stick other components in there and essentially come up with a small synthesizer, a thing that captured the central ideas of voltage-controlled synthesis at the time - Oscillators, filters, transient generators, and so on - but stripped down to the essentials or the core. It was an attempt to get rid of that keyboard that was always by far the single most expensive part of anything we made, by order of magnitude or more.'"

The Gnome uses 3 9-volt batteries to operate. Approximately 3000 of these kits were produced by PAIA."

"This is a MK-III Odyssey with the lovely 4075 filter.
It was refurbished in 2012 when it was recapped , all the front panel sliders were cleaned and re lubricated as was the PPC controller,It was also changed to suit a 240v power supply, all key contacts were also cleaned and the synth was electronically serviced and recalibrated.

The Odyssey has great, flexible routing and a powerful sound. It features 2 VCO's, an LFO, Low pass and high pass filters, an ADSR and AR envelope generator, a ring modulator, sample and hold, cross modulation and oscillator sync."

20 Mins of Metasonix S2000!

20 Mins of Metasonix S2000! from Equinoxoz music solutions on Vimeo.

"It was a warm and sunny afternoon when the post master handed over a box containing some of the most elegant and interesting synthesizers I have encountered.
Gleefully hotfooting it back to the lab I knew I would be in for a treat with this most recent and advanced creation from Eric Barbour the new S2000, this synth is absolutely incredible, able to produce tones I have not personally ever encountered on other equipment in the same way (and not surprisingly its the first time this has been done).

The S2000 explores both subtractive and FM territory with its modulation routing and the onboard controls offer intuitive access to valuable parameters you can use to shape the sound.

The Ribbon controller installed is an excellent idea, part of the "problems" with the Metasonix VCO design (ala the R54 in this case) is the tuning is a sort of non linear Hz/V and it can be tricky to get them to track, the ribbon controller omits this completely and does away with the limits of Black and White keys offering you expressive capability so you can "feel out" the notes.

The machine really does sing, its different to anything else I have tried and in just this short 20 mins I was already loving what it can do so its definitely something that I will explore more deeply.

Like all Metasonix gear the S2000 will take some getting used to but I will say that its one of the more well behaved brain children of the Tube Master Eric!"

Return of messing around with Klee Sequencer

Published on May 1, 2013 Brandon Smith·11 videos

"Nothing serious musically, just a little of this klee sequencer diy'd behind the Panel and daughterboard that NV from muffs came up with, got all the parts in the mail over the weekend from him, synthcube, and electro music, and had a painless build for the most part, (a little tweaking here and there needed, nothing major, had a funky rotary switch that threw me for a loop for a second there and some cable assemplies that needed to be battoned down mo' better) especially compared to how hard it would have been wiring without the daughter board."
