Arduino, MAX7221 LED drivers, AD5206 hex digital pot, 3 CD4046 PLL VCOs, OPA opamp, CD4016 quad bilateral switch, and LM386 amp in a reclaimed case covered in vaguely labeled knobbery, right where it counts. "SCI Prophet VS, made in 1984 [make that 1986]. Beautiful, amazing unicorn of a synth -- a hybrid of analog and digital. Believe it or not, back in the day, 'analog' was out of style, and "digital" was the big new thing. The Prophet VS has one foot in both worlds: Analog was a solved problem, and the engineers still weren't entirely sure what to do with digital! All sorts of things you can't find anywhere else: Bizarre, magical envelope generators that go way beyond ADSR; the capability to loop and repeat. An arpeggiator that can almost be called a sequencer, supporting layering and a memory of over 100 notes. DCOs you can upload your own waveforms to over MIDI.... analog filters, multiplexing, chorus. 8 voice polyphony. My favorite part is its ability to randomly generate patches (Enter + 2) as it takes you into all sorts of wacky areas -- intensely deep patch programming. The Prophet VS is featured on many of the tracks of the new Aphex Twin album, 'Syro', and for good reason!"

Moog Memorymoog Plus SN 3187 via this auction

"I'm listing my vintage 1983 Memorymoog Plus on eBay as of September 22, 2014. I worked for Moog during that time (including creating some of the now-classic factory sounds) and I have been this instrument's sole owner.

This video is intended primarily to demonstrate that the instrument is in working order. Audio was recorded via my camcorder, inducing a bit of distortion that is not representative of the instrument. This was recorded dry with no external effects."

"The Memorymoog was introduced in the early 1980's by Moog Music, Inc, then in Buffalo, NY. It is a six-voice polyphonic synthesizer with three oscillators per voice, making it essentially six Minimoogs under one keyboard, including polyphonic glide/portamento. (Most synthesizers even today have only one or two oscillators per voice.) The sound is huge polyphonically and the voices can be played in unison for a stack of up to 18 (yes 18!) oscillators in monophonic mode—awesome! There's also a Hold mode where you can stack up a chord and play it up and down the keyboard from a single key. Like the Minimoog, it employs Moog's trademark fat 24db/oct filters and OSC 3 can be used as an audio oscillator or an LFO. Unlike the Mini, there's also a dedicated LFO for modulation as well. That way you can have either two VCOs per voice with two modulation sources, or three VCOs per voice with one modulation source. You can also sync OSC 2 to OSC 1.
The first Memorymoogs predated MIDI. When MIDI came along, we added MIDI as well as a sequencer. This was the Memorymoog Plus. There's a lot more to what a Memorymoog Plus can do, but that's the tip of the iceberg... and you can find out more elsewhere online."

Bob Moog Foundation to Host Ignite Gala Benefit

"Encino, CA - September 2014...

The Bob Moog Foundation will be hosting a very special benefit event on October 4, 2014. The Ignite Gala, held at Michael Boddicker's residence in Encino, CA, will benefit the Foundation's hallmark education initiative, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool.

The event promises to be a spectacular evening celebrating Bob Moog's enduring legacy and the power of music as an inspirational, cultural force. Entertainment will be provided by a stellar band including CJ Vanston (Prince, Tina Turner, Toto, Joe Cocker, Spinal Tap) and Steve Porcaro (Toto) on keyboards, Leland Sklar (James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Toto) on bass, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan) on guitar, Joe Pusateri (John Lee Hooker, John Entwistle, the Muppets "Animal") on drums, and Rob Giles (Circa Zero, The Rescues) on vocals, as well as other surprise guests.

In addition to an intimate candlelight dinner, the event will also feature a silent auction of fabulous offerings including various instruments (signed and unsigned), travel opportunities and other valuable services. Donors thus far include Dave Smith Instruments, Yamaha, Line 6, Synthology, Sennheiser, PreSonus, JBL Professional, Blue, Novation, and Shure, with other donors still being added.

Visitors will also be invited to take in the exclusive Innovator's Corner, where new inventions in music technology will be revealed, and to view some classic Moog and other synthesizers from Michael Boddicker's private collection.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Bob Moog Foundation's hallmark educational initiative, Dr. Bob's Soundschool, a10-week experiential curriculum teaching children about the science of sound through the magic of music. Now in its fourth year, Dr. Bob's Soundschool currently serves more than 1,000 second-grade students in 55 classrooms. Visitors to the Ignite Gala will be helping to support the Foundation's plans to expand the program nationwide, including new initiatives in Southern California.

'It is a tremendous honor for me and the band to pay tribute to Bob Moog's pioneering legacy by performing at this event for the Bob Moog Foundation,' stated musical director CJ Vanston. 'This is a way for us to give back to a man whose innovations have brought so much to contemporary music.'

'We've had interest from all over the country about Dr. Bob's SoundSchool,' remarked Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation. 'It's an innovative, STEAM-based curriculum that resonates with teachers and school districts who recognize the importance integrating arts and science education. Through Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, we inspire children to think more creatively by offering them multi-sensory approaches to scientific discovery. We are creating tomorrow's innovators and problem solvers.'

Attendance to the event is limited, and tickets may be ordered online at www.bit.ly/IgniteGalaTix"
