EMS Synthi 100 Restored in Australia
This one in via readers Ross & Luke. An EMS Synthi 100 is being restored at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music by Mr. Leslie Craythorn. According the article on ABC News Australia:
"My count is we're down to maybe three Synthi 100s which are actually working and in original condition, of which this is one"
I'm curious how close that count is. I took a quick look in the archives and there was one in Kohn. The Digitana was featured here (according to the video only about 30 total Synthi 100s were made). There was one fully functional for sale in 2009 and 2006 (the same one?). One was spotted in this Aphex Twin post. Meat Beat Manifest had one featured here. Note the one in the background of this post, and of course the one being lifted by a crane in this post. Click here for all posts featuring the EMS Synthi 100.

You'll find pics, video and the full story on ABC News Australia here.
"On request of the university, Mr Craythorn has spent some of his last months on the job meticulously restoring a rare Electronic Music Studios (EMS) Synthi 100 modular synthesiser.

Mr Craythorn said the instrument is identical to the one used by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the 1970s to create sound effects and incidental music for Doctor Who.
He first encountered the Synthi in 1975 when he was employed as a technician in the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music's electronic music laboratory.
'When I walked in and saw the size and the immensity of the machine... it's overwhelming,' he said."

via the seller: "Yes I am a real person who owns this Jupiter 8 and definitely not a scammer. I have owned it for about 4 years, had it fully serviced in July of 2012 by Mike Metz at Thesis Audio in Wichita, Kansas. The main thing I had done was the power supply rebuilt, and a full cleaning of the chips and plug wires, pots, etc. I also had the lithium battery replaced. The Jupiter was then calibrated. It was working fine when I took it in, these are just things I wanted to go ahead and have done while I had the chance. It sounds incredible and appears to possibly be the 5th Roland Jupiter down the assembly line according to my research. Serial number #030104. Everything is working and I have at least 50 videos on youtube of me playing it over the last 4 years. It has encore midi as well. The Jupiter is in beautiful condition but is not mint, with a superficial scratch here or there. I treat it as a work of art."

"This is a completely refurbished Jupiter 8 with all factory presets and an Encore MIDI kit installed. The unit is in pristine condition with no rust or other visible damage. All pots, sliders, knobs and switches function perfectly. It is an early model with the serial number 070396, and the tuning is very stable. I purchased it last year and had it completely cleaned and serviced at one of the few service locations in the nation which specializes in this work. The owner's quote to me was this: 'We'll get that thing so cleaned up it will be as if Roger Waters himself asked for it. It is our passion.' And they fully delivered. The unit is in impeccable condition. If you've ever wanted to purchase a Jupiter 8 and have it fully refurbished, now is your chance, but without all the hassle I went through--I did it all for you..."

"Insanely clean and perfectly functioning ARP Axxe model 2310 vintage synthesizer, recently professionally serviced, cleaned and calibrated. This thing looks and sounds amazing and it's not super common to find one that's this nice looking, consistently in tune and generally well-preserved. Two missing (easily replaceable) slider caps are the biggest problem I could report. Apart from condition, the sounds that come out of the Axxe are amazing, beastly basslines, Moog-like noise and all shades of wild lead sounds. It's a great machine, waiting for someone to unlock its multitude of capabilities!"

"The unit is practically like new. I can't even begin to describe the possibilities this Synth has to offer..IF you never tried one of these, then your in for the SONIC Shock of your life..Moog has nothing on this Pure ANalog Synth..4 synths in one Rack Provides outstanding Capabilities to create all sorts of Synth Sounds, Strange Sound effects, Lush Leads, Very very smooth Hi Pitch Organ sounds..Bass sounds are out of this world...I can go on...YOu can play it 4 Voice Polyphony or Mono Multitimbral with 4 parts each individually. It has Sequencer built in to Play with the knobs...oh by the way, once you turn the sequencer on, plan on staying up all night cause once you get into a groove, you won't be able to keep your hands off. It's a Science Project, It's a big Toy, it's a Analog Serious Musician Synth, it's a Edit Box, It's a drum Synth..It's anything you want it to be."
