Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08: Forte Piano
Published on Aug 21, 2016 Sacred Synthesis
"I wrote this little piece specifically to demonstrate the forte piano patch.
Only one comment on the sound. There is obviously a fair amount of reverb added to the forte piano patch, but there is also a delay effect. However, the delay is not an offboard effect, but from the Prophet '08's filter envelope. This creates an echoed plucking quality that is very acoustic sounding. It's absolutely key to this patch.
I really like this sound. It has beautiful nuances to it, depending on the keyboard register and the filter cut off frequency setting, which is adjusted by the modulation wheel. I expect to be using it quite a bit in the future. And it may be a rarely appreciated fact, but early forte pianos had only a five-octave keyboard, just like the Prophet '08. So there's plenty of music to be made on this instrument, and no room for excuses that the keyboard is too short.
The wind is produced by the second P'08 Keyboard. The whooshing was created by two LFOs modulating the filter at different rates - one with resonance and the other without it - and the volume of the wind was adjusted while I played by a foot pedal. It creeps back in here and there in the middle of the piece.
Instrumentation:
Prophet '08 Keyboard (2)
Prophet '08 Module
Effects:
Reverb from Lexicon MX300
Recorded live and directly to CD.

"100% analog mono synth! Made by Roland. Special Edition model black/green to match the Aira Series. Limited run, no longer in production.
Manufacturer Description:
VCO 1 has controls for frequency, level and modulation depth. HIGH/LOW switches between octaves. Frequency range: 0.2Hz-10kHz
The WAVE switch selects in a rotating fashion one of the wave forms: sawtooth -> triangle -> 50% pulse -> 75% pulse -> 25% pulse -> white noise -> pink noise
EG/FM selects either the envleope generator or the second VCO as modulation source.
VCO 2 is pretty much the same as VCO1 but has only two selectable waveforms (sawtooth and 50% square) and different modulation options (sync or FM by VCO1). The CV LINK switch routes the external CV for VCO1 to input of VCO2 as well.
The filter is a resonant, 24db/octave steep low pass filter. The resonance goes into oscillation. The modulation source for the cutoff can be either the envelope or an external CV; the modulation intensity is adjustable. Two more switches determine if and which VCO is used for filter cutoff modulation.
The envelope is working either as an AD or an ASR, the middle control D/S determines either the decay time or the sustain level. When envelopes overlap, an interesting percussion effect occurs which prevails in the mix.
The INV/NOR switch can invert the envelope. The modulation depth to the VCA is set with the "EG depth" potentiometer.
HOLD opens the VCA and the VOL control sets the output level. The output switch is used for muting the synth.
The white button allows you to fire the envelope manually and it generates a gate signal at the gate output socket."

Microkorg & PO -12 : Live Synthesizer Jam

"Bandcamp link - https://toddsmithmusic.bandcamp.com/
This is a very simple jam that uses only a Teenage Engineering PO-12 set in 4 pattern chain mode and Korg Microkorg which is played live. I use the same Microkorg patch and general idea of Solar Eclipse. I changed up the live playing, fixed a few things in the beat and did a little more "on the fly" work. I hope you enjoy this little live jam !!
