FIVE MINUTES WITH - XAOC Devices Odessa

Published on Feb 28, 2020 sonicstate

"XAOC Devices Odessa is a - wait for it - Variable Spectrum Harmonic Cluster Oscillator. An interesting FPGA based module. Edd takes us on a 5 Minute journey through it's sonic landscape.

It uses the principle of additive synthesis controlled by a set of carefully tailored macro parameters to harness thousands of sinusoidal partials that altogether form the resulting sound. The series of harmonics can be squeezed or spread apart, tilted, and pruned by a comb-like frequency response, resulting in a variety of unearthly sounds. Furthermore the VCO provides Through-zero linear FM and detuneable clusters of up to five voices."

Exploring the Synthy Side of the Nord Drum 2 - the Scale Preset mode

Published on Feb 28, 2020 NONsynth

"I've got my hands on another Nord Drum 2 and I now want to make a deeper exploration of its synthyness. In this test vid I use the Midibro in dispatcher mode to send single channel midi notes to the multiple channels of the ND2, turning it into a polysynth. I used the Edit Group settings to link all six channels and edit them as one.

What are you seeing in this vid? Well, digging through the manual led me to this (wtf) description of the "Scl Pre" mode:

"Use the Scl Pre feature with an Edit Group
to quickly set up different pitch relationships
between pads.

The pitches will begin at the set pitch on the
lowest numbered channel in the Edit Group
and increase with a factor determined by the
selected scale on the selected channels.

If a Scale has been used to set a pitch
relationship, you can change the pitch of one
channel without breaking the pitch relationship.
This will move all the other pitches until
one of the pitches reaches the maximum, or
minimum pitch (“0” or “127.5”)."

And so begins my experimentation."

Model:Cycles - "No Time to Die" (Billie Eilish) Live Performance

Published on Feb 27, 2020 tubesockor

"This is a live performance of Billie Eilish's song "No Time to Die" from the James Bond movie with the same name, on an Elektron Model:Cycles.

I really liked the original arrangement and wanted to see how far I could take it on Model:Cycles, trying to replicate every (well, almost) single harmony and note.

This was achieved by sequencing a background consisting of beats, bass and a combination of chord machines with all kinds of harmonies and intervals p-locked. On top of this I use the trig keyboard to play the lead melody live."

Sequential Circuits OB-6 Analog Synthesizer Ableton Instrument Pack, Jam number 2

(This pack is compatible with Ableton Live Lite 9.7.7 and above)

I've been enjoying making a few different songs with the new packs I make. There's something so productive in limiting myself to only one set of things, such as a specific Ableton Pack or instrument. I always am able to get results I enjoy. Anyway, this is Jam 2 from my Ableton instrument pack built using the Sequential Circuits OB-6 synthesizer. I had a lot of fun making a nice slow jam that has a groove to it. This synth pack sounds great. The video is the same as the first with the exception of some background effects, but it's just there to give the description of the pack while the music showcases the sounds. Here's more info on the Ableton Pack from our first video, as well as a pack description. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed it!

The OB6 is a monster of a synth. A collaboration between Sequential Circuits and Oberheim that resulted in a beautiful piece of musical gear that hits high notes from both companies. This pack was a collaboration between myself and my friend Dan from the band Electric Dream. They are a synth pop style group, check them out if that's your style of music! He owns this glorious synth and helped me make some of the patches for this Ableton pack. So it's a little bit of me, and a little bit of Dan.

One thing I did a little differently with this pack is the amount of samples I used. I usually use one sample per octave. Some of these instruments rely heavily on their filter movement, so I didn't think that would be enough. I decided to use 2 samples per octave for any synth that I thought had very interesting filter modulation.

I think this pack sounds great for pads and bass! Sequential has a winner on it's hands, and now you have a great taste of the synths capabilities.

This pack includes

25 Multi sampled Ableton Instruments, built from user patches using the Sequential Circuits OB-6.

About this little jam- I wanted to make almost a brother or cousin jam to my prophet 600 Ableton song.... the filters remind me of each other sometimes, although the sound palette can be quite different between them. If you listen to that song you can hear there’s kind of a similar vibe to the chord progression."
