MJ’s “Beat It” Intro - Real Sound & Story
video upload by Anthony Marinelli Music
"In this video Kevin Maloney demonstrates how the intro sound on “Beat It” from Michael Jackson’s Thriller album was inspired by the blue vinyl LP titled The Incredible Sounds of Synclavier II [embedded below and previously posted here - you can find pics of the record and included brochures here. There's currently one on eBay for $259.95 here]. Kevin and Anthony Marinelli show you how the sound was programmed and performed in the studio for Michael to use on “Beat It”. This video also contains the story behind the sound and highlights how far Michael would go to satisfy his appetite for unusual sounds.
In this series Anthony breaks down some of the most icons synthesizer patches that he programmed for Michael Jackson’s Thriller
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

Tubbutec TRS-Bridge - 4x4 TRS MIDI router and merger
video upload by Tubbutec
"TRS Bridge is a midi router, merger and splitter with four TRS-style inputs and four TRS outputs.
MIDI messages received at the inputs can be forwarded to one or multiple MIDI outputs.
Similarly each of the outputs can receive MIDI messages from one or multiple inputs.
TRS Bridge can set these routes in a simple modes for all types of MIDI messages, but it is also possible to route different kinds of messages differently."
Routes and merges midi data, four midi inputs and outputs
4x TRS MIDI inputs, 4x TRS MIDI outputs
Can route, split and merge MIDI streams
Independent MIDI flow settings for notes/CC (red), clock (blue) and sysex (yellow)
Easy to use user interface, quickly change routes, color coded routes and events.
MIDI event monitor with color coding for various message types
Save and recall up to 8 routing settings
Automatically accepts both TRS A and TRS B at the inputs
Outputs individually selectable between TRS A and TRS B
Convert between TRS A and TRS B
Save detach: Will send note off messages if a connection is detached
Auto-restarter: Will send re-sync new clock connections automatically
Sysex Buffer: Buffers Sysex messages if necessary in order to merge them
Adjustable LED brightness
Full galvanic separation of inputs – no ground loops.
Merging and routing
Each of the MIDI inputs can be connected to one or more of the MIDI outputs. Similarly each of the MIDI outputs can receive MIDI data from one or multiple inputs.
TRS Bridge can set these routes in a simple modes for all types of MIDI messages, but it is also possible to route different kinds of messages differently:
NOTE AND CONTROLLER DATA
These are all the midi messages that can be merged without any issues. If two devices send midi at the same time, data will be interleaved and sent to the receiving device.
CLOCK DATA
Clock data can not be merged, only one midi clock stream can be used at a time. When changing the routing, TRS Bridge makes sure that each output only receives clock from a single input.
SYSEX DATA
Sysex data is even trickier to handle than clock data, because sysex messages can have an arbitrary length. if multiple sysex streams are received simultaneously, USB bridge A buffers the data and will forward it to the receiver as soon as possible. This way sysex messages are merged as well.
Warm Nights
video upload by New Systems Instruments
"Patch Notes: this is a polyphonic Triphase patch. Both Triphases are set up to emphasize the first harmonic, by blending the top two phases at around +-90deg. Two phases of the quad LFO and phase expander modulate the first phase of each Triphase. A little bit of the third phase is blended negatively which helps to ensure we don’t entirely remove the fundamental. These are going through a stereo low pass filter (MMM), which is following the notes in an interesting way. After buffering the volt per octave for each Triphase, It’s sent into Babel to get the maximum. This is then sent through an Inertia with a slow rise time and a bit of rise momentum, so the slew is limited and you get interesting filter sweeps that get more dramatic the bigger a jump you make with the notes. Lastly, the two modulated Triphase outputs are mixed together and sent into a second Inertia configured as a filter with a good bit of resonance and some skew on the frequency to make the resonances saw-like and give it that characteristic distorted feel. This is drenched in reverb and buried way back in the mix.

Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the 1010music nanobox Fireball wavetable synthesizer. Is this ultra-compact digital synthesizer just another lifestyle accessory or can it keep up with its big software counterparts like Serum VST? Is it a better choice than its granular (nanobox lemondrop) and FM drum machine siblings (nanobox razzmatazz). Is it too smol to be a performance synth???
Thanks to Tomeso for sending me this nanobox as a long term loan:

Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave - I Almost Missed the Synth of the Decade
video upload by JimDaneker
"I thought the 3rd Wave was a mere PPG clone so I ignored it. After seeing a few compelling videos on it, I took a chance on one. After pre-judging it based on presets, I almost returned it. SO glad I gave it another chance - it has blown me away. Don't miss this one!
