MJ’s “Beat It” Intro Breakdown on Synclavier

"In this video Kevin Maloney and I demonstrate how the intro sound on “Beat It” from Michael Jackson’s Thriller album is constructed on the Synclavier II using four partial timbres from the FM synthesizer engine playing all at once (with heavy chorusing). The sound can be found on preset bank 2, entry 5 named 'Pop Tune Intro' on factory preset disk #3. The sound first appeared on the recording titled:
'The Incredible Sounds of Synclavier II Demonstration Record' released by New England Digital in 1981. The preset was later played by Tom Bahler on his Synclavier II for the “Beat It” recording with only Tom, Michael and engineer Bruce Swedien in the room. Tom was the person that introduced Michael and Quincy to the Synclavier. We also point out that the sound can be in your hands today using various released inexpensive versions of the Synclavier.

Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.

His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

Yamaha DX7-IID : unstable feedback

"It's the association between the DX7-IID and the Ibanez UE-405 echo that creates this flanged tube-chime effect, which sometimes kicks in depending on the notes I played. The DX7 plays a simple sawtooth-like bass, nothing weird. An unstable combination, hard to catch though!

The kick is driven by a modified Altai Analog Echo System (the weird thing sitting on the DX7-IID)
The snare goes into a 1979 Roland SIP-301 & then is sent to a 1985 Alesis XTC Reverb. The hi-hats go in the SIP too but not through the XTC loop.

More explanations :
The UE-405 is running its BBD echo at minimum rate, and feedback is just under the saturation threshold. Depending on the notes played by the DX7, the level sometimes goes above the threshold, creating that flanged highly saturated delay. Yet the BBD driver has a compressor/expander, so when I play longer-sustained notes the feedback loop calms down and the saturation decreases. Subtle sh!t very specific to analog delays :) The Altai is just a cheap echo box, the BBD isn't particularly interesting but the preamp section has a nice transistor stage that clips in an asymetrical way. Banger on kicks.

Oh and that white thing hanging on the racks is my Ibanez UE400/405 controller!"

Sonic LAB: Soma Terra Desktop - Conceptual Touch Synthesizer

"Another conceptual instrument from the folks at SOMA - the Terra is an interesting device with a DSP heart and an organic touch based interface. With 12 velocity and touch sensitive (note triggers) and four modifier controls which can radically alter the tone.
There are 32 algorithms which drive the internal sound engine and each of these can have additional variations - which are selected by the triangular set of touch buttons.
Also with a delay or reverb (one or the other)

The tuning of the note sensors can be done in semitones and microtuning making the scales and notes playable extremely unusual, or usual - the tunings are saved per patch.
In addition there are envelope settings for each bank of buttons, the decay/release or fade out of both the actual notes played and the modifier.

Additional tuning is handled by the pitch shifters - generally + 1 or 2 octaves and down -1 -2, with a fifth by pressing two together.

The results are pretty unusual, although you can easily tune Terra to be in key if you want to play with others.

"My friends from @museodelsynthmarchigiano1717, the Italian synthesizer museum, invited me again to visit them in Italy. This time, they had something new and old to show me: a faithful re-creation of the rare Bob Moog designed Crumar Spirit mono synthesizer. They teamed up with Crumar to bring this little known instrument back to life, staying as close to the original as possible. In this video I demo the synth and tell the story of how it came about."

According to Crumar in the video, the new Crumar Spirit will be limited to 100 units, but polyphonic and desktop versions might be coming.

Sequencer / Berlin School live set with Stepic 1.5

"In this live session I demonstrate the new features of version 1.5 of "Stepic". The free update introduces transposing through incoming midi notes, a new chord mode and an arpeggiator. It is also possible to select the pattern with a midi note. I am going to release a "talking video" in which I explain the new features in detail soon.

Synths in this video are (in order of appearance): Ob-6, Virus TI, Prophet 10. Drums are from Repro-5.
