Interpreting the Synthesizer: Meaning Through Sonics - Edited by Nick Wilson

via Cambridge Scholars Publishing

"This volume examines the synthesizer’s significance for music and culture, with a range of contributors providing historical, musicological, practical and theoretical perspectives.

The synthesizer as an instrument has evolved rapidly over the last 50 years, conveying different meanings in musical culture at various times in its history. For example, post-punk and new wave acts used synths to signify their embrace of futurism and modernity. Earlier psychedelic bands used the instrument to sonically represent mind expansion while prog acts signposted their lineage to the classical avant-garde. Techno artists used synths to escape the strictures of acoustic music in parallel with rave culture’s desire for escapism from the mundanity of daily existence. It is now seemingly ubiquitous in modern pop music production."

The essays were originally presented at a 'Synthposium' conference Nick Wilson ran in Melbourne, Australia. You can find more info on the conference at https://synthposium.net/.

Clan Analogue Accepting Contributions for Upcoming FM Synthesis Compilation Album

This one is in via supporting member Nick Wilson.

Deatils via Clan Analogue:

"Clan Analogue are seeking tracks for their new compilation album, a celebration of FM synthesis.

Just over 40 years ago, in 1983, Yamaha released the DX7 synthesizer and inaugurated a new age of digital FM synthesis. To celebrate the rich history of this innovation in sound creation, Clan Analogue are looking for new explorations of FM synthesis for their next compilation album. FM synthesis takes many forms. Whether you use a classic Yamaha DX7 or its Dexed emulation, Operator in Ableton Live or Native Instruments’ FM8, FM-patched modular rigs or analogue synths with FM functionality, your contributions are welcome.

FM synthesis was the sound of funky basslines and keyboard riffs in many 80s pop hits but was also heard in the hypnotic ambience of Brian Eno and experimental compositions by FM guru John Chowning. Whatever your inspiration, we invite you to move beyond the preset to explore sounds of the future, the past or a sideways alternative reality.

Submissions are being accepted up until the 31st of July."

See Clan Analogue for additional details on how to enter.

DSI Prophet 08 soundscape - Move into the vacancy of tomorrow

video upload by MIDERA

"Well - As much as I loved the Prophet 08, I have sold it. I was planning to buy the Sequentix Cirklon and sold a bunch of stuff (however, no one from Sequentix or Rubadub, who sells it to folks in the US, will reply to my messages, and I find that a really tough pill to swallow to spend $2800 and have no replies - so I'm not sure I will buy one).

Anyway, I find it fascinating that I didn't like the Prophet 10 at first, but now I love it. I loved the Prophet 08 at first, but now... I decided to sell it. Like - I think it was great and all, but I feel like the P10 has it beat, just always so majestic. So... it doesn't really seem to fit in my studio anymore.
