**ORIGINAL** 1980 MFB 501 – Serviced

"Okay, now that's what I call vintage. Not the recent 'MFB 501 Pro' version, but the original 1980, 330,- DM (that was more than this 2024 priice, I'm pretty sure), best-selling one that could be found in many German households during the early 80s (I imagine).

Despite that it's quite rare, as far as I know, probably because: it sounds REALLY GREAT! I haven't been in the position to do a shoot out, but though there's a lot to be said in favour of the 'Pro, I'd say this one sounds quite a bit phatter. Drum machines just like most drum humans get phatter over time, I guess.

Do your homework before considering this, though; important to know is that it has no MIDI but is synced the way they synced in 1980, AND it is NOT programmable but DOES have oh I don't know around 200? funky, fünky presets, all in 3 variable versions, + you can mute and unmute every innstrument, so you'll probably be good. You'll be better."

"This setup would retail for $11,999 for the Model 10 and $1,499 for the 953 keyboard. Save a bunch here. Moog is discontinuing making the Model 10 and they won't be available for new much longer, so grab this while you can at a great price. The Model 10 is in mint shape with original box / paperwork, and the keyboard is in near mint shape with very minor signs of wear. Both come from original owner's smoke free home studio and were used only a handful of times. We tested the setup and found it to be fully functional. The only thing we noted is that the Model 10 oscillators perhaps needing some minor calibration across their wide range, which is common maintenance need for a modular analog synth and should be performed by the new owner as needed after transit."

"8 operators - ...not just 6 like for example DX7...
8 EG
2 LFO
Harmonics Modulator (phase, ring)

The voice architecture is similar to the Yamaha DX synthesizers but where the DX7 has six oscillators to choose from, the VZ has eight.

Each oscillator is part of a 'module' and each module has a long list of functions independent of the other modules: Waveform, detune, envelope, envelope depth (that also functions as oscillator volume), envelope velocity sensitivity, envelope key follow and amplifier sensitivity. Each module is then arranged in 4 pairs: A, B, C and D. The first module in a pair then has the option to mix with the second module (similar to a dual oscillator synthesizer), ring modulate the second module or phase modulate the second module. The output from this can then be sent to the main output, or used to modulate the second module of the following pair (for example: the output from Pair A modulates the second module in Pair B which is also being ring modulated with the first module in Pair B). This freedom to pick and choose your own voice combinations allows for some very wild and complex sounds.

The VZ-1 also features a combination mode that lets you stack up to 4 patches on top of each other giving a total of 32 oscillators per voice."

DivSkip in a tiny case: Minimal Setup

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"We thought we'd try and built the smallest viable setup using DivSkip, our collaboration with @DivKid. So we set out to collect a couple of modules that pair great with #DivSkip in a tiny 48HP @4msCompany pod. It turned out really fun!

The Clock input is generated using Music Thing Modular's insanely practical startup module. Here it's used to output sixteenth note triggers.
DivSkip's channel 1 is set to play a modbap pattern on Out A and B, going to kick and snare on @VladimirPantelic's awesome VPME QD quad drum voice.
DivSkip's channel 2 is set to offbeats, triggering @TimoRozendal's super cool FMP drum. It's a fantastic DIY module using the @YamahaSynthsOfficial YM2413 FM chip - you need to check it out.

The Gliss module from @BelaPlatform plays back a looping CV recording, changing both the sound parameters on FMP and the pattern on DivSkip's channel 4, which in turn is generating a grooving syncopated sixteenth note sequence.

Finally, DivSkip's channel 4 sends a pattern from its Euclidean Split mode to the Karplus-Strong generator on the QD Drum.

Enrica mutes and unmutes each channel on the fly with a click of the push potentiometer.

DIY Kits will restock shortly at @thonksynth (UK), @explodingshed (EU) and @nightlife_electronics (CAN - DIY and built)
Built modules are available at @signal_sounds (UK), @perfect_circuit (US), @elevatorsoundbristol (UK), @elevatorsound_eu (EU) and #schneidersladen (EU)"
