Modular Day Barcelona 2023 after party - HRTL

video upload by Befacosynth

"There are few in the Czech electronic music culture with a background as storied as HRTL, the performing alias of Prague-based synthesiser musician Leoš Hort. Iconically performing from the centre of the dancefloor, HRTL is a force of the wildest nature on his instruments of choice, a carefully curated setup of modular synthesisers and tabletop instruments. Infamously electrifying and always improvised, each of his live club performances is quite literally one-of-a-kind; generative breakbeat rhythms meet with liquefying acid, and synths sliced from the utmost peaks of euphoria."

Making Sound Machines - Farbshaper

video upload by John Schussler

"I covered the Making Sound Machines Farbfolder in a previous vid: [below]

The Farbshaper is similar, but not such a standard wavefolder design. It has a gain circuit that's unusually responsive to the amplitude of the input signal, giving it a very organic sound and variety of timbres you don't get on other folders.

The input signal is all sine wave from the Befaco Pony VCO.

Making Sound Machines Farbfolder vs. Joranalogue Fold 6

"Just got the new Farbfolder in from thonk.co.uk and put it together (it's an easy build, just knobs and jacks). I must admit the sexy color LEDs at the top caught my eye. They've 3D printed a light guide and used a transparent panel, so it gives you an excellent show of das blinkenlights. (Die? Das? I've forgotten what little German I had.)

But of course there's always the real question, how does it sound? And how does it compare to others at its size? I figured I'd pair it against the Fold 6 from Joranalogue, which is also 4hp, for a head-to-head.

Source audio is a Befaco Pony VCO sine wave. Envelope from Zadar.

Farbfilter and Stolperbeats in 7/8 time - Transistor Ladder Lowpass with Drive

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"For this one we channelled our inner Radiohead and made a beat with a 7/8 rhythm.

Come to @superboothberlin 11-13 May 2023 to chat to us and test our modules - we'll be in a beach tent together with all our friends @thisisnotrocketscience3942 @paultasbeeb @knobula6211 @apolloview9305 @vaskiembedded and Swampflux!! We are going to have a really good time and you are all invited to come and play!

Plus they are all debuting new modules we are really excited about!

In this video we are using #Farbfilter, an analog transistor ladder filter for Eurorack with a wicked overdrive stage and CV controlled resonance. We're still putting the finishing touches on this one, tweaking a resistor value here or there and taming the ranges a bit, but we love how it sounds already. A huge thankyou to @DivKid and @SynthDad for providing feedback on this one!

In this patch, #Stolperbeats is sending a MIDI sequence to the @WeAreElektron Model:Samples, playing Samples from the @GoldbabySamples Silverdrum Machinedrum pack for modelsamples. The bass is a PWM saw wave from Apollo View Modular's Allscillator complex VCO.

Both signals are filtered using the Farbfilter, with Stolperbeats sending a CV ramp to the filter cutoff of one lowpass filter and @Befacosynth Rampage being triggered to modulate the other. Enrica is controlling the offset for cutoff and attenuating the incoming resonance modulation. Kits will become available after Superbooth via our friends at @ThonkSynthDIY and @explodingshed5542.

New Module: Farb Highpass - Analog Transistor Highpass Ladder Filter with Tilt EQ

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Here's another neat little jam with a module from our brand new Farbfilter series!

This time introducing Farb Highpass - an #analog transistor ladder highpass filter, with a few tricks up its sleeve! It is a lovely sounding eastcoast subtractive synthesis filter topography that is often somehwhat overlooked and distinct from the classic lowpass ladder circuit.

We tweaked the #circuit and added CV controlled resonance to the feedback path. We also added a Tilt EQ. It lets you either bring some of the warmth back in, or double down on the #highpass effect and go all sizzly.

In this patch, we're using Stolperbeats to sequence the @WeAreElektron modelcycles, its audio processed through the left #FarbHighpass. The module receives resonance CV from Stolperbeats' envelope out, generating a pulse whenever the kick drum is playing. You can hear the filter's lovely self-resonance kick in with the sweep at the start of the video.

The bass is a Sharktooth wave from @apolloview9305 awesome #Allscillator complex VCO (kits available from Thonk). Its output is folded using the right hand Farb Highpass, with Stolperbeats sending a CV ramp to the filter cutoff with every bass drum. With CV patched, the cutoff knob becomes an offset for the incoming voltage.

At the drop, the voltage controlled resonance is expertly wobbled using @Befacosynth Rampage, good news! We have a small batch of DIY kits packed - you can solder the DIY version with our lead #engineer Enrica and be the first to get your hands on one of these modules! If you can't make it, the kits will become available after Superbooth via our friends at @ThonkSynthDIY and @explodingshed5542 .

New Module: Making Sound Machines - Farbshaper. Classic Analog Waveshaper in 4HP

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Getting ready for #superbooth 2023! Really excited to see all our friends and fellow makers again!

This year, we will be introducing our brand new Farbfilter series, and the best thing is, we have a small batch of DIY kits packed! If you join our workshop at @superboothberlin, you can solder the DIY version with our lead engineer Enrica and be the first to get your hands on one of these modules!

In this video, Enrica is playing the #Farbshaper - a classic westcoast analog #waveshaper for Eurorack, designed to add overtones with two CV controlled stages. This module is a non-linear shaper, and it's perfect for electronic and acoustic sounds, ranging from gentle timbral transformation to colourful wavefolding in 4HP.

In this patch, we're sending a MIDI sequence from Stolperbeats to the @WeAreElektron Model:Cycles, with the audio from Model:Cycles processed through the left Farbshaper. The module gets some extra CV modulation from Stolperbeats' envelope out, generating velocity curves from the drum pattern.

The bassline is a pulse wave from @apolloview9305's fabulous Allscillator complex VCO (kits available from @ThonkSynthDIY ), its pitch sequenced with This is Not Rocket Science's @thisisnotrocketscience3942 Tuesday procedural sequencer - a fantastic module that keeps on cropping up in @DivKid clips. The pulse wave is folded using the righthand Farbshaper, with CV input from TiNRS Tuesday's velocity and accent out.

Enrica is tweaking Farbshaper's Gain, Fold and Pleat parameters. With CV patched, Farbshapers knobs become attenuators for the incoming voltage. The little oscilloscope is the awesome battery-driven Korg NTS-2, which came with a lovely book by @BJOOKS on @KorgOfficial synthesizers.

The Model:Cycles sounds are derived from a factory patch, so shout out to @sm0hm and the Elektron team for the lovely and inspiring FM synth they created and also check out Ess' awesome new max4live stuff at @ForsFM!

#StolperBeats feat. WMD & Erica Synths #LXR

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"StolperBeats from Making Sound Machines means something like 'beats tripping over themselves'. This may sound a bit like a drunken drummer, but in practice it gives you a 'realistic drum' sequencer for your modular. This video features the WMD drum modules and the brand new Erica Synths LXR drum synthesizer."

Rolling Beats with a Sloppy Clock - Stolperbeats and Ableton Live

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Excited to be part of Modular Day Barcelona tomorrow - a super nice one day modular meet with DIY workshops, lots of great synth makers and concerts. It is hosted by the awesome people of Befaco at their creative makerspace, Hangar, in the middle of Barcelona.

We will be showing our Stolperbeats drum trigger sequencer and as per your request have been recording a little sketch integrating it with Ableton Live, a small modular skiff and some pedals.

#Stolperbeats is seen here sequencing an #Ableton drum rack via MIDI, running the fantastic Extended Sounds Pack by #Modeselektor and Felix Zoepf - they recorded a ton of studio gear from Roland to Jomox machines, and then made some inspired FX patches within Live that are absolutely worth exploring.

Stolperbeats' trigger outs drive our own secret modular drum prototype, with delay from one of our favourite guitar pedals, the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai. The module in turn receives MIDI from the lovely, super portable OMX27 keyboard by Denki Oto (with backlit linear Cherry keys).

Stolperbeats, roughly translating to "beats tripping over themselves", is our drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by the gritty push-and-pull grooves from the golden age of Hiphop. We've always been fascinated by taking our #beats #offgrid to give them more fluidity and life. This module allows you to easily dial in and seamlessly switch between all the shuffle, feeling and groove we would, in the past, painstakingly nudge together in a #DAW.

We have had a couple of days to soak in the city's wonderful art and culture, hanging out at the Museum of Contemporary Art MACBA and the wonderful Miro foundation (Fundacio Miro) to get inspired for our next modular endeavours, and jump back into soldering modules when we're back home!"

Making Sound Machines Coming to Dutch Modular Fest

Dreamy Shuffle, Lush Pads: Stolperbeats and Digitone
video upload by Making Sound Machines

"We're off to Berlin - excited to be hosting a workshop at Schneidersladen, tonight at 7:30 pm.

We will be playing a short modular live set, spill the beans on our setup and share our deepest and darkest secrets about deliciously bad timing in #Eurorack. You're invited to swing by, and we look forward to hanging out and chatting afterwards. You will have to sign up via mail - info@schneidersladen.de

We recorded this dreamy little sketch during the search for our live set - a very simple setup using the Elektron Digitone as a sound module for its lush synth pads and slick drum tones, sequenced and shuffled by our #Stolperbeats drum trigger sequencer via MIDI notes. The module in turn receives MIDI from the super portable OMX27 keyboard by Denki Oto (with backlit linear Cherry keys - love it!)

Stolperbeats is used here in its 'MIDI Rec' mode, originally envisioned as a quick way to map pitch, channel and velocity from drum machines onto the modules instrument channels by matching the selected instrument to the incoming MIDI data. Turns out this is really fun to use as a transpose with an external keyboard to provide shuffled melodies to the Elektron #Digitone.

If you are in the Netherlands, come see us at Dutch Modular Fest 2022 in Utrecht on Saturday Sept 3rd - we'll have a booth there next to the lovely This is Not Rocket Science (TiNRS) and Vaski, who will both show amazing new stuff."

An intro to Stolperbeats by Making Sound Machines // Dilla style humanised beat sequencing (+ more!)

video upload by DivKidVideo

"Hello and welcome to this video on Stolperbeats from Making Sound Machines. This is a quick introductory overview to the module, some of the features and me making some beats and having fun with the module.

Stolper is German for ‘stumble’ with Stolperbeats meaning stumbling beats that cover the grooves and musical feels of drunk, wonky, lazy, off kilter hip hop rhythms with humanised timings, flams and custom shuffle and swing settings. With modes for DILLA, SHAKE, PUSH and CLAVE you can dial in the general musical feel and timings you’re going for then alter the amount of shuffle. At its core the module is a drum sequencer, offering both step sequencing and patterns for kick snare, 2 hi hats and 2 percussion lines as well as various sync and clock division outputs. So there’s plenty to go at for modular sequencing (and MIDI if that floats your boat).

A full demo video will come around the launch of the module, so ask questions in the comments and let chat about what you’d like to see from the module in the main demo video.

Taking our MIDI gear offgrid: Stolperbeats and Digitone

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Finished a chilled weekend with a nice Sunday evening jam! Stolperbeats is heard here MIDI sequencing Elektron's Digitone 4 voice FM synth, a secret Making Sound Machines Eurorack prototype called Percussive Maintenance as well as Fred's Lab's cheeky little paraphonic voice called Zekit. If you haven't already, go check out the DIY workshops at Superbooth 2022 - where you can actually build a Zekit yourself!

Stolperbeats, roughly translating to 'beats tripping over themselves', is a drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by artists like Flying Lotus, Hiatus Kaiyote and J Dilla. We've always been fascinated by taking our beats offgrid to give them more fluidity and life. This module allows you to easily dial in and seamlessly switch between all the shuffle, feeling and groove we would, in the past, painstakingly nudge together in a DAW.

Stolperbeats' timing is set to Clave, a special mode where the accents in a 3:3:2 rhythm are fixed "on time" and the rest of the notes shuffle around that. The idea came when we chopped up some Modeselektor beats and started to add swing to them.

The Elektron Digitone acts as a sound module here, receiving Stolperbeats' triggers as MIDI notes - channel, pitch, velocity and note length can be adjusted per track to map to any MIDI capable drum machine or synth. The MIDI is split using the incredibly handy Meeblip cubit to target an extra bass voice on Fred's Lab Zekit. Of course, you can still patch the triggers into Eurorack at the same time, so we whipped out our Percussive Maintenance drum voice to add a kick and some hihats.

While Digitone's internal sequencer is not running in this sketch, Stolperbeats still sends a MIDI clock signal so the tempo synchronizes across the two machines. Enrica uses the built-in keys to live-transpose one of the tracks and play a shuffled melody on top of the sketch. We're very excited about Elektron 's new Syntakt by the way, that looks like a perfect match for Stolperbeats."

Offgrid Shuffle in Eurorack: LoFi Hiphop with Stolperbeats

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Here's a modular lofi hiphop patch that came out so leftfield it was too fun not to share! It's built around #Stolperbeats and Befaco's fantastic Percall Quad Drum VCA, with Stolperbeats sequencing the shuffled gates and a wooden baseboard amplified and routed through our #TausenddB and #Multiplikand patched as a texture control.

Stolperbeats, 'beats tripping over themselves' in German, is our upcoming drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by artists like Flying Lotus, Hiatus Kaiyote and J Dilla. We really love those beats and used to reconstruct them for our tracks in the DAW, so we ended up digging deep into the techniques how real-life drummers like Questlove from The Roots or Perrin Moss from Hiatus Kaiyote play these shuffles.

This patch is almost a little hack as it uses Stolperbeats' clock outputs as a musical signal. Subdiv outputs the swung clock or a related set of tuplet subdivisions, perfect for syncing up cartesian sequencers like Make Noise Rene that advance one step per clock tick. Sync plays a straight unswung metronome ranging from once every four bars to 24 ppq, great for keeping a Delay or LFO in time.

Here, Stolperbeats' clock signals are patched to trigger Percall's VCA envelopes, shaping the sounds picked up from the board with piezo contact mics, and creating groove from the offset flams of the shuffled and straight clocks. Enrica is performing the drum rolls by changing the subdivisions on the fly. It's all held together by the lovely blips from Winterbloom 's Juno-inspired DCO Castor & Pollux on kick and a Patching Panda Hatz patch on snare duty.

We'll be showcasing this setup tonight at Muelheim Modular's lovely synth shop in Köln Mülheim. It's part of Mülheimer Nacht 2022 so if you're in Cologne, swing by and say hi! You will be able to try out the patches and modules hands-on. If you want to build our synth #DIY kits, we're hosting a workshop at Superbooth in Berlin, 13.05.2022, 17:00. If you are unable to make it to Berlin, kits are available at Muelheim Modular and Exploding Shed (EU), Thonk (UK) and dsp.coffee (US), or visit our website and mail us directly."

New Module: Making Sound Machines - Stolperbeats. Shuffled Beats in Eurorack!

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"Happy Easter everyone!

What started out as a tiny little seedling of a project, our secret pattern generator, has grown into its own and hatched as a full-grown Eurorack module! Stolperbeats, roughly translating to "beats tripping over themselves", is a drum trigger sequencer designed to create shuffled beats influenced by artists like FlyingLotus, HiatusKaiyote and JDilla. We've always been fascinated by taking our beats offgrid to give them more fluidity and life. This module allows you to easily dial in and seamlessly switch between all the shuffle, feeling and groove we would, in the past, painstakingly nudge together in a DAW.

Stolperbeats is heard here triggering Eurorack drum modules, including the fantastic Prok Drum available as a DIY kit from Thonk doing the obiwankenobi dragon call, Tiptopaudio’s One playing the @beatsbykabuki STRIKE audio card through @rocket_not FenixIV phaser and an unreleased Making Sound Machines prototype called PercussiveMaintenance, played through @serge_by_random_source 's wavemultiplier and with added oomph from @tomwhitwell's MusicThing Minidrive. The performance showcases switching from a nonuplet groove to a quintuplet shuffle in the blink of an eye.

Stolperbeats features CV and MIDI control over trigger patterns for Kick, Snare, open and closed Hihat and 2x Percussion, as well as control over the depth of shuffle applied. It outputs trigger signals for use with Eurorack drum modules, and MIDI suitable for drum machines and synthesizers.

The module is not in stores quite yet but you will be able to play it at @superbooth_berlin 2022. And you might have noticed a sneaky little peak of it in a @divkidvideo already : D"

Solder a DIY module with us at Superbooth 2021!

video upload by Making Sound Machines

"We've made you a little something, and you can build it at Superbooth 2021! A lot of friends online and offline have asked us about TausenddB, the little four channel preamp eurorack module we used to record our piezo videos with, so we've made it into a DIY Kit. And we will premiere it at Superbooth 2021 in Berlin, where you can build it with us in a workshop!

Get tickets for the workshop: https://www.superbooth.com/de/events/...

Tausend dB was originally designed as a small run of helper modules for space explorers, a public audio installation at Reading FringeFestival 2019 and in collaboration with visualists WARPED TYPE.

It was inspired by Tom Whitwell's MusicThing Microphonie and Mutable Instruments Ears, but we needed a different set of features: more channels, because we had a lot of contact mics, so we packed four channels into 6HP; mute switches, because we wanted to be able to act quickly when things get out of hand; and a secret row of expander pin headers in the back, so we could boost CV and audio from our favourite gear and devboards with jumper wires: Bastl Kastl, Korg Volca Modular, Electrosmith Daisy, Teensy and Arduino.

Jumpers in the back let you select whether you want to filter DC offset.

Check out the other awesome workshops too: Koma Elektronik, Touellskouarn, Befaco, Leaf Audio, Fase Lunare, Shakmat, AtoVproject and Jolinlab will all be there to build awesome stuff with you! Aaaaaand we might sneak peak a module at TiNRS’s booth, who will present a lot of great new modules as well ❤️ So come check them out and say hi!"
