Cinematic soundscape | Vhikk X, PlayFader, Qu-Bit modules, and more

A melodic and ambient performance, live with a eurorack case.

Fair warning: Play All Day sent the PlayFader over for free for me to try. There was no explicit discussion of a deal beyond that. Take that as you will. I will say that it's an extremely nice-feeling piece of gear, much heavier and sturdier than I'd expected. Its idea is quite limited—just two mono sequencers, and limited to 64 steps (though you can set it to unusual step counts)—but I can imagine it as a fun controller to complement a setup with a more traditional sequencer. For me, its use will be limited, as I tend to like unusual sequence lengths for the mono synths over top of standard sequences. But I like the feel of the hardware so much that I'm looking for more excuses to use it.

Beyond that, this was an excuse to put together a case with a lot of sound-shaping potential. Vhikk X was doing bass drone, Eowave Domino was the melody / lead synth, and Rample Turbo was playing some samples that I think were kalimba. But the Qu-Bit modules—Stardust for a separate tape reel, Nautilus on delay for Domino, and Mojave on granular for the Rample Turbo—radically transformed the sound. Those Qu-Bit modules are really growing on me: each unit does way more than you'd expect, with Stardust having filter/tape effects/reverb/bitcrushing/glitch, Nautilus having delay/reverb/saturation, and Mojave having granular/reverb; and each unit is decently sized so that they're easy to play.

Altogether this created a sort of sonic landscape that I couldn't have achieved through exploration in another setup. That's the joy of eurorack.

Thanks for listening.

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

"A free unofficial OS modification by Deep88 with help from ChatGPT

I wanted a Track Mute page on my MPC3000. Nearly twenty years later, I finally made it happen, with ChatGPT's honestly insane help and a whole lot of trial and error.

I first used an MPC3000 back in 2007. Over the years, I started appreciating the newer MPCs, especially for the Track Mute page. I love building a song by muting and unmuting tracks, like on a big mixer, using Track Mute. The first MPC with a Track Mute page was the MPC2000, which got it through an OS update, using a Shift + button shortcut. From the MPC2000XL onward, it became a signature of the MPC family. Naturally, I wanted it on the 3000 too.

A couple of weeks of tinkering, using MAME's MPC3000 emulation for the first tests, and here we are. This update is based on OS 3.12, with Track Mute and a few extra features thrown in.

It's a bootable update only. There won't be an EPROM version, and I will never sell it. I made it as a gift to myself, and I'm sharing it for free with anyone who wants it, in the spirit of the old internet. If you feel like improving it or hacking in more features, grab ChatGPT, or whatever exists by the time you read this, and give it a shot.

Simply insert a floppy with .sys inside or use a gotek floppy emulator with .hfe or .img and turn it on."

"There weren't many more than a couple thousand made. The Mark Vail book goes into some detail on the company's history.
It functions very well for its age, smaller electrolytic caps have been replaced, pots and switches have been cleaned. Like anything this old, it has its quirks, but this synth when new was kind of its own special thing. No Modifications or custom "Improvements". Missing handle. Otherwise in pretty nice shape.
Has not been calibrated recently, but span and octave tuning are close enough to play fairly well. (keys per octave fine tuning has to be full sharp for accurate octave, I think it was just mistakenly set that way when tuned last) A pot or two might still be a little scratchy from sitting, but you'll have that. I may clean it while packing if I find time. Full service manual, schematics, and documentation are available online.

Features:
4 VCO's 2 can be LFO's, all have some degree of continuously variable waveform blend -runs 1.2v/Oct
Tons of odd as well as conventional internal modulation switching and routing options
4 channel source mixer
VCF (Love it or hate it, its tame and musical) has a continuously variable mode control LP/BP/HP
2 AR generators with Sustain
Ring Modulator
Sample/Hold
Onboard Preamp
White noise Gen
Keyboard Glide
Dupohonic (Ok, 2 note -Paraphonic?) Keyboard controller
Limited external 1/4" patching, semi-modular
It all fits in its own neat little box. The top half is the synth, bottom half, the keyboard"
