4ms Spherical Wavetable Navigator (SWN) - Creating Your Own Wavetables

Published on Apr 29, 2019 4mspedals

"Learn how to create your own wavetables from an audio source on the Spherical Wavetable Navigator. In this video we create a new Sphere using a voice sample, add effects, and save it.

For advanced features such as Waveform Spread, Shift, and Stretch, applying effects to spherical dimensions, see the User Manual.

https://4mscompany.com/SWN

The Spherical Wavetable Navigator (SWN) is a six-channel synthesizer that makes it easy to create slowly morphing drones, polyphonic melodies, evolving sequences, and rich textures. The SWN features six wavetable oscillators with independent pitch, level, and waveform controls. Six LFOs (Low Frequency Oscillators) can be used as modulation sources and/or envelopes, making it easy to add dynamic motion to your patch. Each channel is a full voice and can be “played” using the top row of buttons, the internal LFOs, or note-change detection on the 1V/oct jacks. The SWN ships with 12 three-dimensional (spherical) wavetables and an easy interface which allows you to record and edit custom wavetables from live audio. Open-source software for Mac, Windows, and Linux called SphereEdit can be freely downloaded and allows you computer to create, edit, and convert .wav files into Spherical wavetables to transfer into the SWN with an audio cable."

4ms Listen Modules & Battery Powered Pod Setup

Published on Feb 19, 2019 4mspedals

"Create a small but ultra flexible system for music production using Pods and Listen modules from 4ms Company.
The Listen IO module is your interface between Eurorack and external gear. Here we use the Listen IO to connect a KORG Volca Beats and Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator into our Eurorack system made of two Pod32's and a Pod20. Two headphone jacks on the Listen IO let you and a friend listen along in stereo.
At the end of the signal chain is a Listen Four, which mixes up to four signals in stereo and outputs to headphones and line level. A bigger version of the Listen Four is the Listen Four Quarters, which has 1/4" (6.35mm) balanced TRS outputs.

The entire setup is being powered directly from a Krisdonia laptop battery using our standard DC barrel cables, and offers hours of continuous low-noise use."

Listen Four

The Listen Four is a four channel stereo mixer with line, modular, and headphone outputs. Two mono channels with Pan knobs and two stereo channels with dual inputs provide optimal compatibility with both stereo and mono signals. The Listen Four can be daisy-chained to other Listen modules to create a larger mixer with sub-mix outputs.

Tapographic Delay (TAPO) from 4ms Company and Matthias Puech -- Clocked Tapography

Published on Nov 8, 2017 4mspedals

"Demo of forthcoming 4ms and Matthias Puech Tapographic Delay:

The Tapographic Delay is fed with a simple melody from MI Rings. A steady clock from 4ms QCD is fed into the Tap input. Once I am ready to record a tapography, I switch the Edit switch to Add for a while; the added taps line up perfectly, resulting in the classic sound of multi-tap delays. I go on and add more taps, changing the clock multiplication; the repetitions add up into complex rhythmic patterns. Increasing modulation, the taps move around their position: the timing gets more and more sloppy, and we can hear the doppler effect, shifting the pitch of each repetitions up or down, randomly.

Direct take, no additional processing."

4ms IN/OUT: Tapographic Delay (TAPO) - Marc Kate

Published on Nov 7, 2017 4mspedals

"Using the QCD as the master clock, two channels of the STS are going into the Tapographic Delay. The force resistance sensor (and preset patches) are generating the polyrhythms, textures, and pitched percussions. With the SMR’s 1V/Octave outputs, pitch is sent to ALM’s Akemie’s Castle. The PEG triggers envelopes with the VCA Matrix for each note, and those notes then hit the DLD to create elongated melodies. The SMR’s six channels are then pinged, or plucked by the RCD gates. The SMR’s notes pass into the Tapographic Delay, accumulating varying tapped patterns."

4ms Stereo Triggered Sampler (STS) + 2017 Prototypes

Published on Aug 18, 2017 4mspedals

"Made with the Stereo Triggered Sampler from 4ms Company --- AVAILABLE NOW!

PATCH NOTES

STS:
• mono mode
• left side triggered by QCD pattern. Length and start position modulated by slow QCD out and its inverted QCDexp output. (1voct pitch offset by SMR 1voct out)
• right side plays dub-like rhythm. Play is triggered by QCD output. Sample CV is modulated by QCD, to alternate between kick and upbeat stabs. Play length is modulated by PEG red side, which is clocked to QCD.

Spherical Wavetable Navigator:
• 6x oscillators play at various octaves and are brought in via its mixer section.
• Wavetable depth, longitude and latitude are modulated by 3x of the 6x LFO outs.
• Chord progression achieved by using transpose knob.
• SWN mixed into both STS channels via VCAM.

All channels mixed to mono and sent to Tapographic Delay (TD) via VCA Matrix (left side of STS dominates the mix). TD is clocked to red side of the PEG (which is tied to the main clock coming from QCD). TD is set to pitched delays and its stereo outputs are sent to LISTEN FOUR output mixer in channels 3 and 4."

4ms Stereo Triggered Sampler (STS) Granular Scrubbing

4mspedals
Published on Aug 14, 2017

"This video shows how the STS can scrub through a sample by using a granular effect. Setting Length very short and sweeping the Start Position achieves this. The playback time of a sample can be changed without altering the pitch, and depending on CV skew, the file can be played both forward, and back.

Using an LFO into Length CV reduces the buzzing that comes from repeating a short 'grain' (minimum 8ms on the STS)."

Spectral Multiband Resonator (SMR) Tutorial #1 -- 1V/Octave outputs in firmware v5

Published on Dec 14, 2016 4mspedals

"Tutorial Video #1 in a series for the SMR from 4ms Company.

This covers the 1V/octave output mode, which is a new feature in firmware v5. Six VCOs are being controlled by the SMR, using the Spectral's built-in scales and tunings. This shows how the SMR can be used as an sequencer, arpeggiator, and chord machine using up to 6 VCOs, which adds 6 analog or digital voices to the system, tracked to the system.

Hold down ROTATE while you flip the Env switch to "Fast" to enable the Env Outs jacks to output 1V/octave CV on these jacks. Then patch the Env Out jacks into the 1V/OCT jack of your VCOs (up to 6 VCOs). Use each VCO's Frequency knob to tune it to the associated SMR channel. You can then run the VCOs into a mixer, or through effects etc if you like. All VCOs will track perfectly with your SMR!"

4ms VCA Matrix modular synth jam performance & demo

Published on Aug 16, 2016 Patrick OBrien

"Featuring the power of the 4ms VCA Matrix!! This live modular synth jam / demo features the Eurorack module which has four CV or audio inputs that can be routed in any amount/combination to four outputs, using the 16 CV control jacks, Level knobs, and Mute buttons. More info on the module: http://www.4mspedals.com/vcam.php

4 Voices:
Kick: Mutable Instruments Peaks
Bass: Make Noise STO
Melody: Intellijel Dixie II+
Clap: Hexinverter Mutant Clap

Effects:
Reverb: Audio Damage AEverb
Delay: 4ms Dual Looping Delay
Granulation: Audio Damage Grainshift

The clock starts with the Make Noise Wogglebug feeding the Make Noise Tempi, which also clocks a Delptronics Triggerman, triggering CV to various channels. It also feeds the 4ms Pingable Envelope Generator to make a long kick trigger midway through the piece. I used Intellijel's Dual ADSR for envelope shaping. The melody is sequenced by Kilpatrick Audio K4815 Pattern Generator. Mutable Instruments Warps and Make Noise DPO were being used as CV also, giving a unique sound to some channels.

All 4 outputs of the 4ms Matrix were sent to a Malekko MUTE 4 outputting to Pittsburgh Modular Outs, sent to Ableton Live for master file creation for YouTube, SoundCloud, and Instagram.

-------------------------------

I recorded video with an iPhone 6+ then manually synced the video with the audio using iMovie.

-------------------------------

No computers were used in the performance of this piece. All modular synths, recorded live in a single take."
