Alan R. Pearlman Foundation 2021 Calendar & Year in Review

via the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation was formed to honor the legacy Alan R. Pearlman, inventor of ARP Synthesizers - groundbreaking electronic synthesizers that changed the face of music forever. "to make his innovative inventions publicly accessible, and help inspire future generations to imagine and create through charitable projects."

Year in Review

Last January we were given an opportunity to introduce the Foundation to the music instrument industry at the hugely popular NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) show. You, the supporters of the Foundation helped us, the foundation board members to promote the Foundation, its mission and its charitable projects to electronic musicians, engineers, potential donors and the press. We had an extremely successful show and made hundreds of contacts as well as raise money and awareness for our projects.

Other 2020 Achievements:

Attained 501(c)(3) Status: The Foundation is now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization! All donations are eligible to be tax-deductable! We received our status at the end of this past March! What a surprise!

ARPchives LIVE! We have been hosting a series of online educational opportunities and live stream 'studio visits' called ARPchives LIVE!

50th Anniversary of ARP Synthesizers Celebration: This included a series of recordings, live streams, commemorative artifacts and most exciting: an ARP 2500 ROUND-TABLE [posted here]. with opening remarks by Jean Michel Jarre!
Participation in virtual synthesizer festivals including Synthfest a la Maison (France)[in the playlist here] and SoundMit (Italy) [posted here], and collaborations with Willem Twee Studios and AES [posted here].

News and New Activities

Due to the worldwide pandemic, our major fundraising event was cancelled, and of course, like all of you, we did not attend the variety of trade shows that were originally scheduled for this year.

We have an exciting 2021 planned for you.

NEW PROGRAM! ARP Living Collection and Studio: We are partnering with a non-profit recording studio to create a recording and creating ARP-centric studio environment. We have the space, and the beginning of a collection, and plan on launching next year. We will be able to have visitors like you, use the ARP Synthesizers in a variety of ways. Details to be announced at the beginning of 2021

NEW LEARNING: We are working on an exciting, never-before seen series of instructional videos, that will be released on a pay-as-you-can subscription.

TWO NEW Webinars dates TBA: The 2600 and a Women in Synthesis summit.

How You Can Make a Difference

Though the Foundation is in its infancy, we are now a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit. We are seeking funding to cover some of our costs to create online learning materials, purchase technology for our future online programs, marketing for the concert and scanning materials for the digital archives.

We need help from people like you! Music lovers, synth lovers, creators and believers in perpetuating educational and creative opportunities.

Please consider making a donation today. Visit our website's donate page or, for some fun perks, donate to our IndieGogo page where you can get the ARPCHIVES 2021 Calendar!

Update: new Full Edit video.

David Van Pelt was a true trooper, though our hostess could have chilled a bit. We will publish an edited version in the next few days! ARPCHIVES LIVE! is back! Our first guest of the year is David Van Pelt who also plays synthesizer in Acolyte*, a prog band from Australia. We'll have an interview, some video and demos and talk about the recent addition to his synth family, how he got into ARPs in the first place, his beautiful music, band and the synth scene in Australia.

Live Stream ARPchives LIVE! EPISODE 20 with Shawn Johnson

video upload by Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

"ARPchives LIVE! is back for another season! Join d'ARP and Shawn Johnson as they discuss wind controlled synthesizers, plugins, and the music of Brazil

Shawn Johnson is a synthesist/saxophonist whose influences include ambient, jazz, pop, rock, soul jazz and the warm tropical sounds of Brazil. His interest in electronic music production led to the creation of the All Things VST facebook group where all aspects of music creation using Windows, Mac, and iOS devices are discussed.

His love of synthesizers dates back to his earliest musical experiences with classic records by Elton John, Paul McCartney and Wings, Steve Miller Band, and progressive rock bands like Genesis, Rush, and Styx. While studying Music Education in college Shawn performed with local rock bands on saxophone and synthesizer. After relocating to the Chicago area, he gained additional experience performing acoustic jazz and Brazilian music for several years. He eventually became interested in home recording and synthesizer performance using the first wind controller he acquired in early 2018.

In addition to the demos and musical works published as a hobbyist musician on his own YouTube and Soundcloud sites, Shawn has recently appeared on recordings with Benedict Roff-Marsh

Lands with Shawn Johnson

video upload by

"New album which features saxophonist Shawn Johnson playing EWI on the two main tracks. His playing style is quite different from mine so we compliment each other very nicely. His input really lifted these tracks.

If you enjoy the music, please be sure to purchase the album over at Bandcamp for only $5: https://benedictroff-marsh.bandcamp.c...

This album grew from what I was trying to do for the visual side of "Red Skies Yellow Sand" but just couldn't get started with at that time. What you see here are the first attempts at building world fly-throughs that managed to 'make it' to completion. The purchased version of the album contains three more tracks (total 40 mins) that also accompanied early render trials."

ARPchives LIVE! meets with ARPs with Chris 'Haasan Barclay' Rogers. November 23, 2021

video upload by Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

"ARPCHIVES LIVE is back next with a very exciting guest! Haasan Barclay is an accomplished Boston-based artist who has participated in our ARPS for All program, utilizing the collection to broaden his spectrum of work. Join us as we sit down with him to discuss synthesizers and his work.

Check out his bio:
Haasan Barclay is a recording artist, songwriter, and record producer from Boston, MA. Growing up in the early internet age, his music represents the melding of classic pop sensibilities with a fresh, modern intensity. His creative approach to short form video has amassed millions of views across social media, acclaim from music critic Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop, and led to partnerships with brands like Topo Chico, FILES, and GIPHY. His most recent project, 800 Fantasy Lane explores the vulnerabilities of black masculinity in America while blurring the boundaries between genres to achieve a sound that Jamz Supernova of BBC 1 Xtra described as, 'post Frank Ocean funk rock.' Haasan's work has been featured in Pitchfork, Complex, NPR, and Allston Pudding, as well as through exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art and Boston Center for the Arts.

"(NOTE: These videos are for historical preservation and EDUCATIONAL purposes only. )

We are very excited to release 'The Lost ARP Tapes,' recently discovered footage that had been buried in decades worth of television. Join us Tuesday, June 7th on our YouTube channel to watch them live and celebrate Alan Pearlman’s birthday.

We will be having several releases. featuring footage from the 1970s of demos, two different ARP factories, Alan R. Pearlman, Phil Dodds, David Friend, David Frederick, and Tom Piggot! Not seen in 45+ years!

Included in these sessions will be other rare footage of Alan R. Pearlman speaking in later years (not in any other documentary) as well as contemporary interviews with ARP employees"

And via Dina Pearlman in the ARP Foundation mailing list:

Today is my father's birthday

Alan R. Pearlman would have been 97 today! Because he was born in 1925, he remembered the George Washington Bridge being built, the Great Depression, was a World War II vet.. he worked on the early NASA projects, saw the first person on the moon. And he built one of the most famous synthesizers in the world.

With celebrating my father's birthday we also recognize our future—the kids who love their STEM classes, the musicians who have aspirations to make music, or the filmmakers who wish to make soundtracks.

This summer we are trying to raise a minimum of $15,000 for the following projects:

ARPs for ALL - insurance, restoration and repair of instruments

ARPchives including scanning, digitizing and licensing rights to rare photos. See also: Google's Music Makers and Machines!

Our first residency at ARPs for ALL (estimated $10,000 for housing, transportation and engineering assistance) Grantwriter(s)

We will also be holding our Fall Synthposium and Fundraiser 2022: A Fifty Year ARP Odyssey!

READ the Synthposium Press Release

We hope you will consider making a tax deductible donation to The Alan R Pearlman Foundation

My father was a mentor. In his tradition, The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation is dedicated to preserving his legacy to inspire others, and to provide them with the tools to do so with our ARPs for ALL projects as well as our ARPchives that include Hot off the Press!

This year we have located some lost ARP tapes premiering on YouTube later today [above] (more coming later this summer) We have also located some rare photographs, but we have to purchase them, so this is part of our goals for this latest fundraiser.

BillTMiller ARPCHIVES

Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

"From The Alan R. Pearlman Foundation:
A fantastic visual feast through Bill Miller's ARP Journey! (ALERT: A few strobe lighting effects for those who are sensitive.)

Musician / Recording Engineer - Producer / Filmmaker - Photographer - BILL T MILLER has been on the quest for SOUNDS and FUN ending up on a path to ARP SYNTHESIZERS starting with a TOY PIANO on his second birthday, then a bit of tinkering on his grandfather's grand piano, then scoring MAGNUS CHORD ORGAN and an ACETONE ORGAN in his early teens in the late 1960s with his band THE ELECTRIC ONION where he played guitar/bass and a bit of drums and keyboards.

By late teens (in 1975) he ended up at COLLEGE for RECORDING ARTS in San Francisco (in Golden State Recorders Studio) where he studied recording engineering production and took synthesizer classes. Walking into the first synth class revealed ARP 2600 in person..... luv at first sight.

Shortly after graduating and moving to Hollywood with hopes of buying a 2600.... reality set in and he scored a USED ARP ODYSSEY MK1 1974 model, that was purchased in late 1976. Some of the recordings you hear in this video are part of those BTM Bungalow Bill Sessions 1976-77 (although Bill had been playing music for over a decade at that point, those ARP SYNTH tapes are the earliest surviving BTM recordings in existence.)

Working in California doing recording and live sound from 1975-1980, he ended up back on east coast (where he had spent first two decades of his life.) Eventually ending up in BOSTON (1984) working at Daddy's Junky Music (selling recording and sound gear) while doing freelance sessions at studios (PolyMedia, Newbury Sound) and live sound at venues (The Rat, Bunratty's, The Channel) and starting his own semi private project studio HEADROOM.

Fast forward to early 90s... a band BTM had recorded before called CHEATER SLICKS popped into Headroom and said meet our new bass player DINA... and then pointing to BTM's ARP ODYSSEY (that he had hung onto since LA 76 era) said something like... DINA's father's company created YOUR SYNTH....meet DINA PEARLMAN... daughter of ALAN R PEARLMAN. wow. cool. We chatted a moment about how much I luved my Odyssey and she spoke very briefly of her father and some ARP adventures (mentioning Pete Townshend and more) = but then we jumped right into recording the garage punk band tracks where she nailed solid bass guitar for a raw live session.

So... jump way ahead and BTM continues creating experimental music with his own bands... Out of Band Experience (OBE), Kings Of Feedback, Drum Army, King Of Slack, Orgy Of Noise, Zonkulator and recording and photographing tons of OTHER artists (hardcore, garage, punk, metal, noise genres.) All the time digging further out into weirdo land with circuit bent toys, and custom electro acoustic instruments, and of course synthesizers. Always hanging onto that original icon ARP ODYSSEY and his Roland JX-8P and adding an ARP 2600 and modular eurorack synths and more to the mix. Active in various Boston synthesizer synthfests/meetups playing live synth concerts at the DAVID FRIEND RECITAL HALL at BERKLEE in Boston. Then he attended the "Alan R. Pearlman - Everything ARP Symposium" at Berklee finally saw DINA PEARLMAN again with her father and mother and all the ARP family in a sort of THIS IS YOUR LIFE celebration of all things ARP. A moment in ARP history that is beyond words.

Much respect to DINA PEARLMAN for the Alan R. Pearlman Foundation and ARP ARCHIVES carrying on the ARP family legacy in memory of her mother and father and all the ARP family who created and played and sold and loved ARP Synthesizers over the now 50 years. Dennis Colin and David Friend are two of the people that have contributed so much to the ARP legacy, but there are so many others who were there in essentially what amounts to the golden 70s decade of ARP that made it all happen. Now with the help of Dina's love and devotion ARP lives on and on.

Bill T Miller has always LUVED ARP and his first synth the ARP ODYSSEY is still the centerpiece and heart of his studio HEADROOM in BOSTON.
Always exploring the weird sonics and basically ignoring the create a patch on a synth to simulate "real" instruments thinking and going for
the outer space blip bloop sample and hold I hear a new universe of unreal electronic music.

Nick Carlisle ARPchives LIVE!

video upload by

"'Häxan - A Soundtrack', the first solo album from Nick Carlisle (Peepholes / Bamboo / Katy and Nick / Lean Logic) is released midnight 25.11.22. The album contains highlights of a 1hr 45min score Nick was commissioned to write for the 100th anniversary edition of Häxan (dir. Benjamin Christensen) by QFT Belfast, part of the UK-Wide BFI In Dreams Are Monsters season of horror films. Nick is set to perform the complete score at a live screening of Häxan at Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast on the 24th November, tickets on sale from https://queensfilmtheatre.com.

Nick wrote, performed & produced the album mainly on an array of old analogue synths and a Mellotron. Sarah Rosamond (Ghostlore of Britain) guests on the album, playing harp and adding vocals to 'The Scourge'. 'Maria The Weaver' was co-written with Katy Cotterell ( of Nick’s project "Katy And Nick").

Nick: 'The film is an essay on the history of witchcraft and is set mostly in 15th Century Northern Europe so the music (very!) loosely reflects that. I bought a Sami drum and some bells, and I multitracked myself playing some out of tune flute. However the last chapter of the film is set in the contemporaneous 1920s where Christensen compares how women are treated, for better or worse, for ‘hysteria’ via psychoanalysis, when 500 years before they would have been accused of and tortured for being a witch. The last two tracks on the album, “The Sleepwalker” & "The Thieving Daughter” therefore are set apart as they belong to that more ‘present’ section of the film, and they’re piano based as opposed to vaguely medieval sounding. Anyway there is no real comfort from the present as even now 100 yrs after the 1920s we’re as knee deep in idiotic conspiracies as ever.'"

Herbie Hancock :Trailer PSA by Dina Pearlman-Ifil

video upload by Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

"A short introduction to the 2023 ARPchives LIVE! Series by Executive Director Dina Pearlman-Ifil. We are proud to kick off the series with A Conversation with Herbie Hancock."

https://alanrpearlmanfoundation.org/

"On October 18th of 2022, Herbie Hancock sat down with d'ARP (Dina Pearlman-Ifil, daughter of Alan R Pearlman, the creator of ARP Synthesizers) and gracefully shared his time with her to discuss a myriad of subjects: from his early years of Crossings (Mwandishi Sextet) to the Head Hunters album, to sound tracks; from Civil Rights to Covid, to the state of the planet and the future generations of music. A wonderful glimpse of a creative giant who got his start in electronic music using ARP Synthesizers."
