Native Instruments Announces ABSYNTH 5

"Berlin, September 1st, 2009 - Native Instruments today announced ABSYNTH 5, a new generation of the acclaimed semi-modular software synthesizer that is renowned for its unique evolving sounds and textures. The new version enhances the profound sonic capabilities of ABSYNTH with powerful additional synthesis and effects features as well as overall improved audio quality, and offers an ingenious new way to create complex sounds based on musical attributes.

Popular among professional composers and sound designers as a distinctive instrument for innovative timbres and complex soundscapes, ABSYNTH has now been upgraded with special sound shaping features that further widen its remarkable sonic palette. A powerful "Supercomb Filter" opens up a new world of physical modeling-type sounds with intricate acoustic resonances, while the new granular-based "Cloud Filter" can add both subtle and drastic spectral modulations. The addition of filter feedback paths also enables a whole new range of organic, gritty and unpredictable tones.

The versatile effects section of ABSYNTH has been expanded with the new "Aetherizer," a unique algorithm that breaks up sound into microscopic particles and rearranges them in complex ways, creating sophisticated and previously unheard sound treatments. With all parameters available for realtime modulation via versatile envelopes and MIDI control, the Atherizer also supercharges the popular application of ABSYNTH as an extraordinary creative effects processor for external audio material.

ABSYNTH 5 also introduces the "Mutator", an innovative feature that enables intuitive sound creation and variation based on actual musical terms. For any given preset, users can choose specific attributes from the sound browser that they want to change the sound towards. The software then analyzes other presets related to these attributes, and adjusts the original patch to adapt the desired sound characteristic. Combined with various customization options and an adjustable randomization function, the Mutator allows all users of ABSYNTH 5 to create unique and complex new sounds in an efficient and highly convenient way.

The comprehensive sound library of ABSYNTH has been expanded with 250 new presets that make use of the new soundshaping features, resulting in an arsenal of over 1,800 ready-to-play presets that are all easily accessible through the integrated KORE-compatible sound browser. To further refine the general audio quality, ABSYNTH 5 also utilizes new oversampling algorithms in various stages of the signal path that enable increased sonic clarity in the crucial upper frequency range.

ABSYNTH 5 will be available in October 2009 for a suggested retail price of $199 / 179 EUR, and will also be part of the new KOMPLETE 6 bundle. An update for owners of previous versions of ABSYNTH will be available for $79 / 69 EUR.

"Inside the Grid on Altair IV" by Mark Mosher - A One-Note One-Patch Soundscape in Absynth 5

Published on Dec 23, 2012 by Mark Mosher

This song is also available as an MP3-320 audio download on soundcloud http://soundcloud.com/markmosher/inside-the-grid-on-altair-iv .

"Inside the Grid on Altair IV" is a soundscape created with one patch from scratch using the Absynth 5. It is performed be pressing and holding a single note for the entirety of the song. While I have used Absynth as the sole instrument for songs in the past (Tracks 3 & 4 on my last album markmosher.bandcamp.com/album/no-ghosts-just-fear), I've never created a patch where one held note triggers the entire composition. Recent works by Absynth creator Brian Clevinger and artist Anthony Distefano have inspired me to do start working on some pieces of this nature and this is my first of many to come.

The audio is CD quality, and the video shows a behind-the-scenes look at Absynth's wonderful 68-stage modulatable envelopes in action. So all the movement and changes in dynamics, pitch, timber are meticulously drawn and programmed as part of the patch. The envelopes also support LFOs on segments. The envelopes can be extremely long and also loop independently which making Absynth fantastic for evolving soundscapes.

Note, I am also using an envelope to change the "effect time" of the Pipe Effect which is a unique audio effect within Absynth. P. 88 of the manual describes it best "Let's take the image of a string. A loudspeaker (a contact loudspeaker) is connected to a string, which begins to vibrate as a result. You can determine the position of this virtual loudspeaker on the string via the parameter Input Position. Above the string are two pickups, similar to an E-Guitar. The pickups' positions can be determined through the parameter Output Positions. Changing those two parameters can be compared with changing two microphones. You can modulate the string's length and the pickups' position through the LFOs or a MIDI Controller. This way, various flanging, pitch-shifting and rotary speaker effects can be achieved. These effects are particularly apparent when the modulation of the pickups are modulated in op¬posite directions."

2013 Summer of Synth Sessions Boulder #01 Octatrack Meets Absynth

Published on Jun 15, 2013 Mark Mosher·54 videos

http://www.MarkMosherMusic.com

"I normally do all my composition and production work indoors. I decided it was just about time to do some sessions outdoors considering the fantastic summer weather and locations we have here in Boulder. Here is my first session "#01 Octatrack meets Absynth" (watch embedded video).

Octatrack

I'm just getting started with the Elektron Octatrack performance sampler but I decided it would a perfect instrument to kick off a summer session as it's possible to do entire compositions with effects from this one box. I'm finding that playing it from the front panel even without the sequencer can be incredibly expressive even though it doesn't have velocity sensitive buttons. The secret sauce is in the morphing scenes. You can create up to 16 scenes each with it's own parameter settings. You then assign one of these to either Scene A or B on-the-fly. You can then morph between the settings of each scene with the incredibly sensitive optical crossfader which causes the Octatrack to smoothly interpolate between A & B parameter settings. In a nutshell, you are able to control and perform with incredible amount of number shaping parameters in realtime.

#01 Octatrack meets Absynth

I've seen a lot of beat-driven videos so I thought it would be fun to do an ambient piece. This piece is an original improvisation recorded in real-time in one pass playing Octatrack buttons in Chromatic mode. No sequencing is used. There are 3 tracks of audio samples being played. The source samples were rendered from Absynth and include 1) a factory patch called Choiromechanoidz 2) A custom Absynth granular synth patch based on a custom Aalto patch I sampled 3) A custom absynth patch called Broken FM -- pure FM synthesis. The piece makes heavy use of morphong with the crossfader, scene switching on the fly, FX morphing on on tracks and via chained effects (Neighbor Machine).

Sun Position and Aspen Trees

I didn't intend this, but I happened to line the Octatrack up with the shadow of the roof. The piece is long enough and the shadow is close enough to the edge of the instrument that you can easily observe the earth's rotation via the shadow movement. I finish right as the sunlight is about to hit the Octatrack. You can also see a reflection of the Aspen trees above me in the Octatrack's display.

A note to my fellow artists - the Octratrack display and LEDs are easily visible outside as long as you are not in direct sunlight.
