EDP Caterpillar for EDP Wasp Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"An extremely rare 'Caterpillar' controller designed by Chris Huggett. The caterpillar has four ports on the back for controlling up to four EDP synthesizers via 7 pin DIN sockets. One link cable is also included (not pictured in this sale).

As you can see this has aged really well, and has been recently serviced by SRS prior to sale.

The two controls on the front panel are for:

1. selecting how many devices you want to control (1-4 or Voice setting).
2. Selecting Unison, Poly or Cycle, there is also a separate Hold setting that gives you the option of also selecting Unison, Poly or Cycle.

The unit powers off of a single 9V battery.

Note: There is a design flaw with the Wasp circuitry that does not allow the lowest C note (first key from the left) to trigger the Wasp. However by the time EDP designed the Gnat they fixed this problem and the lowest C note will trigger a Gnat, this has been tested as I also own a Gnat and Gnat Special. The unit has been tested working fully prior to listing.

This is not a synth but a controller please be informed :)"

EDP GNAT

images via this auction
"Synthesizers don't come much more special and rare than this, the infamous EDP Gnat, smaller 1 Oscillator brother of the EDP Wasp. Designed in 1980 by Chris Huggett of OSCar fame, this is a seriously quirky synth with a huge sound for it's size. It may look like it'd be difficult to play, but it's not, and it's a lot of fun too. You can create a wealth of unusual sounds, from deep basses to soaring leads, modulated textures to drones and other sonic madness. The filter alone is worth buying it for - i've never heard a synth with such a razor sharp sweep when you open the filter up."

DP WASP SYNTH & SPIDER SEQUENCER w/ Extras

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Legendary EDP Wasp and even more rare the Spider Sequencer by Chris Huggett, quirky looking toy like synth but a serious piece of kit, capable of rip roaring synth lines, fat bass...just straight up dirty with so much character. Great for all types of Electronic music.

These were recently serviced by Synthrestore in Jul'18 and is studio ready.

As expected there are some minor casing cracks on the "Wasp" on three corners of the synth but nothing crazy, and the battery cover is missing.

The Spider sequencer is clean with very minor wear and tear. The Spider is a 256-note step, or 84-note real time digital sequencer to control the Wasp and/or Gnat. It features a few simple controls for entering notes in step or real time and transposing the sequence a semi-tone, whole-tone, major-3rd, or perfect-5th as well as speed controls. Although it has EDP's own pre-MIDI interface for connecting it to other EDP gear, it also had CV/Gate outputs for connecting it to other analog synths to.a

Both units have been thoroughly tested prior to listing and is studio ready for use.

What you get:
EDP Wasp Synth
EDP Spider Sequencer
2x Power Adapters (non-original good quality)
1 x Din Link Cable
Manuals, schematics and patch sheets (Non-orginal)"

OSCar Oxford Synthesizer Company

via this auction
"This is number 855, I believe Chris Huggett from the Oxford Synthesizer Company made about 300 non midi and about 700 plus with. This is the last revision which means the potentiometers respond quicker and you have all 36 voices to store your own sounds. It is a remarkably versatile idiosyncratic sounding machine that has a character all of its own. It syncs up perfectly to computers or drum machines via midi. The sequencer is excellent for creating quick grooves and the separation knob allows this baby to talk like no other synth I have heard. Made in England."

Legendary EDP Wasp by Chris Huggett, quirky looking toylike synth but a serious piece of kit, capable of rip roaring synth lines, fat bass...just straight up dirty with so much character. Great for all types of Electronic music.

This was recently serviced by SRS in Mar'2017 and is studio ready.

EDP Wasp

Casing is in very good condition with a minor crack on one corner as seen in the picture.

One rubber foot is missing on the underside.

EDP Spider

The casing is in good cosmetic condition with very minor wear and tear.

The underside has the battery cover missing and also 3 rubber feet.

Not many synths will come close to the Wasps tone quality and an even rare chance to grab the Spider sequencer which so rarely comes up make this thing a joy to use and will surely get those creative juices flowing!"

OSCAR SYNTHESIZER - FITTING THE TAUNTEK MIDI BOARD AND OPERATING SYSTEM

video by Mindburner

"The OSCar is a fabulous monosynth designed and built by Chris Huggett. My machine had been plagued with issues from day one. A major problem was the highly unreliable start up. The synth would not 'boot' and many power off/on cycles were needed to get it to work.

TAUNTEK have a new MIDI PCB and Operating System with may new features. I hoped this may fix my synth and make it useable aging. Here I detail my install of one of the first version of the Firmware.

The PCB needs to be built but many of the parts are readily found.

More details can be found at TAUNTEK
Special thanks to the folks on the OSCar freelists group.

Video for information only. A qualified synth tech is always recommended for synth repair."

"Designed by Chris Huggett and built in the UK during the 1970’s.

Two oscillators, noise source, LFO, High/Low/Band pass filter separate EG’s for VCA and VCF.

Touch sensitive keyboard.

These are highly sought after due to the gorgeous sound they produce.

I doubt you’ll find a better example complete with original box!

It has no cracks in the casing which so many do have."

"Legendary EDP Wasp by Chris Huggett, quirky looking toylike synth but a serious piece of kit, capable of rip roaring synth lines, fat bass...just straight up dirty with so much character. Great for all types of Electronic music, I'm sad to see it go but needs a must.

Overall condition is excellent, with minimal signs of wear and tear. Unlike most Wasps this one doesn't have the cracked corners on the casing, however there is a slight scratch on the keybed which can be seen but not obvious, this does not affect its use. (please see pictures)."

"Up for sale is a (1) rare EDP Wasp synthesizer, made in England and designed by Chris Huggett. This synthesizer looks like a toy, but sounds very cool! It's been used, but optical it's in good condition for its age (see photo's). It works perfect, only the volume-knob is crackling a bit. It comes with a 9V DC adapter. The serial number is: 002141..."

EDP Electronic Dream Plant Wasp Synthesiser

via this auction
"I've owned quite a few classic synths like the Minimoog, Oberheim OB-8 and Yamaha CS80, but none of them is quite as extraordinary as the Wasp. Designed in Oxford by Chris Huggett, the Wasp is an early digitally-controlled analogue synth in a unique injection-moulded plastic case

The Wasp looks like a toy, and sounds pretty tinny through the built-in speaker, but plugged into a mixing desk it sounds enormous. The sounds seem to come from nowhere with no background noise. Just huge, clean monstrous synth sounds that you couldn't imagine coming from any other synth

At the heart of the Wasp are two digitally-controlled oscillators and a superb filter. There's a third "control" oscillator for LFO and filter modulation, switchable between random, sine, two sawtooth and square wave shapes. There's also a noise source. There's an envelope shaper for the VCA and one for the filter. The filter is very flexible - both the control oscillator and the envelope generator control the filter via +/- pots

The main oscillators can be switched off and the filter & noise source used to generate wind & noise effects - which it's very good at - or the filter Q can be pushed right up, virtually into oscillation, to generate spooky water drop effects with the control oscillator on random

It's a monophonic synth, in the tradition of the great Mini Moog and, like the Moog, can generate monster bass sounds. The Wasp is cleaner sounding than the Moog and it's also brighter and deeper"

Modcanned

Published on May 13, 2018 zack dagoba

"A bunch of sketches on my new (old) Modcan A modular system. I damn well love this thing! Its such a beautifully designed system - offering utter uniqueness and flexibility. It seems to fall between West-coast and East-coast design philosophies - combining all the good things about modular synthesis in one giant bundle of fun. The system here is made up of original Modcan A modules and also Cyndustries A-format ones. These were made a bit later once the A-series format had become established around the mid 2000's. What is cool is that Cyndustries used to commission / licence designs from well known figures in the synth design world - and put the names of the designers on the front of the modules. It reads like a who's who of the geeky electronic scene, with names like Nyle Steiner, Chris Huggett, Jurgen Haible, Don Buchla, Ken Stone, Bernie Hutchins, Peter Granader, Serge Tcherepnin. It all adds up to an amazing modular experience, like playing with a giant synth museum in a box. See http://myblogitsfullofstars.blogspot.... for more"

Electronic Dream Plant Gnat SN 401463

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The EDP Gnat is the slimmed-down version of the EDP Wasp, yet it has its own buzzy attitude that holds its own. The built-in speaker provides a nasty bite, much harsher than its stinging counterpart, and the filter radiates menace at its higher settings, swarming around your head. You can also patch straight out into your favorite effects or direct into your mixer or sound card for a less confrontational volley with your favorite winged insect synth's sticker coated touchplate.

The Gnat has a digital oscillator that is fed through an analog filter, a trick the designer, Chris Huggett (RIP) used to great effect on later classic synths he designed like the OSCar and Bass Station. The oscillator has several selectable waveforms including Ramp, Square, Noise, and the one we always left it on, Enhance, which moves the waveform around in a manner similar to pulse width modulation and makes the single oscillator sound like two beating against each other.

Next to the waveform selection is an octave switch where you can choose footage of 32, 16, 8, 4, and 2.

The front panel also includes an LFO featuring sine, ramp, saw, square, and random waveforms as well as speed control and an offset amount for setting modulation of the oscillator.

The remaining controls are a filter with resonance, seriously, the resonance is wild, and a pot to set the balance of what is affecting the filter's cutoff, VCO, or envelope. Speaking of the envelope there is a dedicated section of the panel for it with attack, decay/release, and a contour knob. Finishing out the panel is a glide amount knob.

The side of the Gnat has a 1/4" output jack, a connector for the EDP Spider sequencer to attach to, and a 9V power inlet.

This Gnat is fully functional, with all "keys" sounding. It can be run with a 9V power adapter, or alternately with 6 "C" batteries, so you can take the Gnat back into the wilderness with you.

The synth is basically in excellent shape but we marked down the condition due to the faint remnants of someone copying note letters to the first four keys, which we have pictured.

A very rare synth, speculation is that there were only 600 or less made. EDP used a serial numbering system that started with the model number, in this case 40, then starting the count from 1000, which leaves this Gnat as the 463rd unit. We were unable to find another for sale anywhere online."
