Stoneroot Live @ Turku Synth Club Modular Meet 2016

Published on Jan 31, 2016 jarsamo

"Here's a piece I played/improvised with my mainly Doepfer-based modular synthesizer at Turku Synth Club Modular Meet in 30.1.2016.

I used the Roland Boutique JP-08 synth to add some extra spice. Roland's sequencer was only used for the JP-08. There isn't a proper sequencer running the modular - everything is based on a single square LFO wave as a "main" gate, which is run through clock divider/multiplier to get multiple different rythmical variations for controlling different elements. The "melody" line is actually a sample/hold random shit attenuated and run through a quantizer.
I also used Yamaha mixer's hall reverb to add some room. The performance was recorded with a Zoom H1 which also seems to have picked a beer can opening sound in the beginning quite nicely ;)

List of modules used is pretty much here: A-178, A-199, A-101-6, A-171-2, A-110-4, A-137-1, A-132-3, A-124, A-101-2, A-110-2, A-137-2, A-188-1, A-103, A-120, A-160-5, A-160-2, A-118, A-148, A-147-2, A143-3, A-140, A-138

Doepfer A-137 Wave Multiplier

"a-137 is a voltage controlled wave multiplier. the basic idea of a wave multiplier is to multiply the waveform of an incoming signal (e.g. triangle/saw/sine from a vco) within one period of the waveform. this leads to additional harmonics of the incoming signal. the period and consequently the pitch of the signals remains unchanged (in contrast to frequency multiplication e.g. with the pll module . the a-137 works as a kind of "inverse low pass filter", i.e. it adds a lot of harmonics to a signal that contains none or only a few harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle waveform). in contrast to that a low pass filter removes harmonics from a signal that contains a lot of harmonics (e.g. saw or rectangle waveform). consequently the best results are obtained in combination with input signals poor in harmonics (e.g. sine or triangle). the a-137 can be used with signals rich in harmonics too (e.g. saw) but the effect is not as remarkable as for triangle or sine waves. for rectangle signals none or only little effects are obtained.

the a-137 is a very sophisticated wave multiplier that offers much more features, more controls and more waveform manipulations than other wave multipliers available so far. in addition all parameters are both manually adjusted and controlled by external voltages. these are the features of the module:

controls:
* input level (to adjust the input level for best effect of the succeeding controls)
* multiples (number of waveform multiplications, manual control)
* harmonics (additional effect that adds more harmonics similar to the resonance/emphasis control of filters, manual control)
* folding level (controls upper and lower folding level, manual control)
* symmetry (controls symmetry between upper and lower folding level, manual control)

inputs/outputs:
* audio in (also suitable for control signals)
* multiples cv in (with attenuator)
* harmonics cv in (with attenuator)
* folding level cv in (with attenuator)
* symmetry cv in (with attenuator)
* audio out (resp. processed control signal output)

the multiples parameter (manual and ext. cv) defines the number of basic wave multiplications within one period. with the folding level and symmetry parameter (both manual and ext. cv) the upper and lower clipping levels of the wave folder units are controlled. the harmonics parameter (manual and ext. cv) adds some harmonic content by sharpening the waveform edges and adding overshoot peaks. it works a little bit like the resonance control of a vcf. the module is fully dc coupled, i.e. even control signal can be processed with the modules.

as it is a little bit difficult to describe the parameters only by words we have some pictures and audio examples available that explain the function of the module and its parameters.

the level control is used to adjust the the input signal (audio or control signal) to a level that creates the best effects when the 4 parameters of the module are altered. the signal is processed by a vca and 4 so-called wave folding stages. from the parameters folding level and symmetry the upper and folding level is derived for each stage. at the clipping levels the signal is "folded back", i.e. the direction is inverted or the signal is "reflected" at the clipping line. the working principle of the first folding stage is shown in the next picture. as the module contains 4 folding stages up to 8 foldings are possible (4 at the upper and 4 at the lower clipping level).

the incoming signal of each stage is folded back as soon as the signal level goes beyond the upper clipping level resp. is folded up as soon is goes below the lower clipping level users will know this function, indeed the a-137 includes 4 stages similar to. as mentioned above upper and lower clipping level are controlled by the folding level and symmetry controls (both manual and cv controlled). from our point of view these parameters are easier to use than upper and lower clipping level. the internal upper and lower clipping levels are derived by adding resp. subtracting the folding level and symmetry voltages. the vca setting (multiples control) defines the number of wave multiplications or foldings as the multiplications depend upon the level that appears at the folding stages. smaller levels lead to less multiples, higher levels cause more multiples as the folded output signal of the preceeding stage has sufficient level for a subsequent folding in the next stage.

the harmonics control sharpens the waveform slopes and adds some overshoot at the edges - a little bit like the resonance control of a filter. internally the harmonics feature is realized by an additional vca for each folding stage..."

Doepfer A-137-2 Wave Multiplier Module Eurorack

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"Module a-137-2 is another version of a wave multiplier. in contrast to the a-137-1 wavemultiplier i the a-137-2 generates four phase-shifted copies of a vco signal applied to the audio input. the four shifted signals are added to the original signal to obtain a fat sound similar to five independent vcos. the phase shifting is made by a simple circuit that works only for sloped signals like sawtooth, triangle or sine, but not for rectangles or pulses"

Serge sounds-- so far, I love the 137! I'd been on the fence on the module for a long time and am very happy I picked one up. I'm looking forward to using it for non-FSU purposes eventually, too. In the meantime...

Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR controlling 3 LPGs

Doepfer A-143-2 Quad ADSR controlling 3 LPGs from katavist on Vimeo.

"This is a fairly basic (and visually boring, sorry) demo of the A-143-2, showing one of many possible uses. The patch was rather complex with Wiard Malekko Anti-Oscillator as the only audio-source, Wiard Malekko Borg Filter in LPG mode, PlanB Model 13 (both gates), MakeNoise Maths voltage mirroring MFB Dual LFO random output - this output and the mirrored cv were mixed by a Doepfer A-138c Polarizing Mixer (with additional inputs from diy 8 step sequencer and Bugbrand Ctl-1 as 4 step 3 track sequencer) all controlling Anti-Osc pitch… Model 13 SUM-output also into Doepfer A-188-1 4096 stages BBD whose output was filtered by Wiard Joyrider double Borg and finally sent to the Blacet Time Machine. First output from Model 13 into Doepfer A-137-1 Wave Multiplier I (which was fed 4 cvs from A-144 Morphing Controller modulated by A-147 VC LFO and then into diy spring reverb... plus some more senseless Maths patching and whatever I forgot... Ah, and thanks to TipTop for the wonderful stackcables!"

Some audio 'made with doepfer'

via ISM who brought us the Big Doepfer Filter Shootout:

"All tracks were made with a Doepfer A100 system plus some drumsamples, a Roland RE-201 and a Korg SE500. Polyphonic stuff was done with a detuned DX7 pure sine oscillator patch processed with Doepfer modules. Mixing done in Cubase.

The Doepfer modules that you can easily recognize are the filters and BBD modules. The bass sounds are derived from pure bass sine waves with A-136 distortion and A-137 wave multiplier. Phasing is done with the 12 stage vactrol phaser and a bit of thru zero flanging with the A-188-1 and A-118-2 BBD modules. But basically all sounds are processed with Doepfer modules.

Early 2010 there will be a limited edition cd with about 15 dubs in this kind of style."

PLL Ringmod

YouTube via boobtube356
"Doepfer A-196 PLL tracks Plan B M15 VCO. PLL output passes through Plan B M12 bandpass filter and then is ring modulated with the M15 sine output. The result goes to the Makenoise QMMG. The background is a Cwejman VCO-6 sine going to Doepfer A-137 wave multiplier, then ring modulated with Cwejman MMF-1. The result goes to the Cwejman VCA-4MX and is then panned at audio rate by a Cwejman VCO-2RM. Sequence is from Doepfer A-160/1, A-152, A-143-3 and Plan B M14."

A-137 and VCO-2RM

YouTube via boobtube356
"Cwejman VCO-2RM ring mod output. The pair is in sync mode and the Doepfer A-137 Wave Multiplier is processing the sine output of OSC1 before being ring modulated with OSC2 sine using the on-board ring modulator. Most adjustments are made to the A-137 and the pitch of OSC2. The Make Noise QMMG is in low pass gate configuration with the resonance and freq up a little on the first channel. Sequence is S&H LFO to Plan B M14."

Dueling VCAs

YouTube via boobtube356
"Cwejman VCO-6 sine output through Doepfer A-137 Wave Multiplier, then amplitude modulated by self oscillating MMF-1. The result is sent to the VCA-4MX for the high notes, and the Makenoise QMMG for the low notes. The sequence is chaotic, using the PH-4, the A-147 VCLFO, and the A-170 Slew Limiter. The notes are S&H LFO through the A-156 Dual Quantizer. Both the VCO-6 and MMF-1 are getting feedback modulation from the VCO-6 sine output."
