Electrocomp EML-200 + Korg SQ-10 Sequencer Demos

More synth videos via 123synthland. Embedding is turned off on these, so you'll have to click the title link to get to them. BTW, we have an answer on the latex gloves. Mini wears them to keep the units pristine after cleaning them up for auction.. Very, very cool. It makes me think of all the times I've walked into a used synth shop; my first thought is always, "why the heck didn't they clean these synths up to make them more appealing?!" They are usually pretty dusty if not outright filthy. One of life's little mysteries...

Update via Mini:
"Dear Matrix,

Thanks for the link to our EML-200 videos in your blog. I wanted to make a correction.

After many years of selling on eBay and getting frustrated by their inability to keep it a safe and honest marketplace, I took a long break from selling there. My old personal account's still in good standing but we're back now with a brand new business account (123synthland). You already blogged our Paia 2700 auction (sorry if the pics are boring!). Our current goal is to sell off a lot of relatively inexpensive and slow-moving items on eBay but to continue selling higher end stuff directly, as we have been for a long time.

So, while we do greatly appreciate your link to our auction page, the EML-200 and SQ-10 were initially photographed for direct sale, without eBay in mind. The SQ-10 in the video appears to be spoken for but we do have another we can prepare for sale, and we're taking offers on the EML-200 at the moment. Whether that one will end up on eBay remains to be seen.

I agree that it's hard to understand why people selling their gear don't take the time to clean it up. On the other hand, I caution people not to think a vintage synth that looks clean on the outside is going to be in good working order when they get it - most vintage synths out there, clean or not, need servicing after so many years.

Thanks,
Mini"

2/5/24 (atmospheric river range combinations) ElectroComp EML 200 (x2) + Langevin Filter + CXM 1978

video upload by Cfpp0

"Two ElectroComp EML 200 synthesizers are cross-patched, and their master oscillator ranges are adjusted, which affects both samplers, the envelopes, etc. The bottom EML 200 runs through a passive Langevin filter, panned left, high passing. The Chase Bliss & Meris CXM 1978 is set to a delayed reverb, with the reverb increased towards the end. Also used a Synthesizers.com Q124 mult."

Switched On Austin - Synth studio & store tour | Austin, TX

synth4ever

https://www.switchedonaustin.com

A synth studio and store tour of Switched-On in Austin, Texas -- including the Switched On synthesizer showroom, walk-through of the Switched On synth store and brief highlight of the synthesizer repair area.

During a trip to Austin in early 2020 I had a chance to revisit the Switched On synth shop I first toured in 2018 [video bellow]. Switched On have since moved from their original location to a new spot and are under new ownership, so it was a great opportunity to see the new synth store.

This synth studio and store walkthrough showcases Switched On's extensive record collection, tape machines, various synthesizers, modular gear, classic vintage synths, rack units and more. To learn more about Switched On, visit https://www.switchedonaustin.com

Published on Aug 30, 2016 Nicholas Rich

"A classic and somewhat rare analog modular synth. Fooling around here with the sample and hold."

via this auction

"An all-original Electronic Music Laboratories ElectroComp EML-200. This is a prime, collector-grade example of a rare analog modular synthesizer. Cosmetically extremely clean, and fully functional. A pot or two is noisy, but nothing requiring more than a cleaning. Comes with four original Switchcraft patch cords.
The Model 200 was introduced in 1969, with a blue panel. This is is the second version, with the silver panel. Serial #05XX. This is the cleanest example you're likely to find."

3/17/24 (bass version) ElectroComp EML 200 + Lexicon PCM 70

video upload by Cfpp0

"Some more RoboCop from the ElectroComp EML 200. Similarly hysterical patch as in the previous 3/17/24 EML 200 video, but more of a bass version this time, with lower tuning on each VCO, different on times for the spring reverb running into the switch, and a bit less swung."

3/11/24 ElectroComp EML 200 + Lexicon PCM 70 (1.3 Circular Dlys)

video upload by Cfpp0

"The ElectroComp EML 200 master oscillator square wave drives the whole wave shaper section and the switch. Sampler is fed one output of VCO 1. VCO 1 and VCO 2 outputs go to the ring modulator. VCO 2 also goes to VCO 1 CV input. Sampler outputs go to VCO 1 and VCO 2 CV inputs. Wave shaper is set to amplitude, with the ring mod output going to carrier in, and modulation input is first getting a sine wave from the master oscillator (until 1:20), then only the switch output is audible until (at 1:30) I change it to the envelope. The ring mod output also goes to the spring reverb, 100% wet, which goes to the switch. The switch output is dry, but a stereo delay from the Lexicon PCM 70 is applied to the output of the wave shaper, which runs through mixer No. 1 on the 200."

Vintage ElectroComp EML-300 Manual Controller\Manual Voltage Generator

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Vintage 1970's ElectroComp EML-300 blue face controller unit.

The ElectroComp 300 from EML is a controller unit with a basic synthesizer, sequencer keyboard with numeric buttons and control knobs.

The 300 is divided in 3 sections. On the left is a switch patch panel. the mid section has a VCO with envelope generator, and the right side has 16 numerical buttons that trigger notes as an alternative to a keyboard.

The 300 needs to be used with one of the EML models such as the 200 or 400 models. It draws it's power from the connected model. EML offered the unit as an alternative to using a keyboard with their modules.
Overall in good shape, it does have scratches on the wood casing, mostly on the back, sides and corners.

I did have them checked out, and had the necessary repairs\cleaning done to make them functional.

The unit was cleaned and tested. All the jacks, connections, and potenciometers were cleaned and checked.(Per the repair technician)"

IDOW: Robert Wheeler & Allen Ravenstine Release EML 101 & 200 Recordings

Pere Ubu's Robert Wheeler & Allen Ravenstine, featured in the modular documentary I Dream of Wires, have released two LPs on 12" vinyl, City Desk & Farm Report, featuring the EML 101 & 200.  You can watch a clip from IDOW featuring them and their EML systems including a custom EML in this prior post.  A double CD is planned in the future.

"In the spring of 2012, Allen Ravenstine and Robert Wheeler travelled to historic Grant Avenue Studio in Hamilton, Ontario, to appear in I Dream of Wires, a film documentary about the role of modular synthesizers in electronic music.

Canadian Filmmaker Robert Fantinatto dedicated 20 minutes to an interview with the two pioneers of industrial electronics, and their choice of the unique EML Electrocomp synthesizer as a performance instrument in Pere Ubu.

Allen Ravenstine was a composer, patron and pioneer of the burgeoning Cleveland arts scene in the early 1970's. As synthesist with Pere Ubu, playing the EML-200 and later the EML-101, he earned international acclaim for his inspired use of industrial sound before retiring from popular music in the late 1980's. His approach to live performance - rejecting the traditional tonal keyboard for an intuitive wash of modulated noise - has been much imitated but rarely equaled.

Robert Wheeler (of Home & Garden) joined Pere Ubu in 1994, playing the EML-101 and a handmade Theremin. He is a relative of Thomas Edison - a birthright that led him to take a leading role in the Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan, Ohio. In January 2010, he accepted a Grammy Award on Edison's behalf..."

Dasi's Healing Chime - Ambient Meditative Buchla, Vintage Moog Modular & EML

"There are some who believe that all objects and places have a spirit inside of them. The Japanese have old folk tales about discarded umbrellas becoming lonely ghosts that haunt their previous owners. Many native tribes have ascribed emotions to the rocks and trees they encountered every day. Dasi is a musical collective that believes in such things..."

via Dasi: "We've been working on this record for the past year. it's a mix of my little 200e system, a small Moog modular circa 1969, an old 69' Electrocomp 200 and a small Makenoise/DIY system. There is a smattering of Roland Vsynth and bit of Gnaural for binaural beats which were both fed to the modulars for processing.

The guitars are mostly my 1964 Fender Jaguar with a infinite sustain circuit installed and a 1970s Gibson Explorer, Rickenbacker 12, and custom electric sitar also making appearances. also tons of 68' Fender Bass VI on the low end

The environmental recordings were recorded in Tazmania, Japan, and Mexico. Some of the ocean wave recordings weren't 'epic' enough so there is a lot of 222e ring work pulling waves in and out. oh, and sorry about the sound of me smoking cigarettes in the rainforest...i tried to edit them out but couldn't cut them without upsetting the rhythm of the forest crickets!

i know it's not the most Buchlidian bleepy bloopy album out there but hopefully it will give the 'can a buchla do tonal music' guys something to chew on!"

You'll find the release here and Dasi's Facebook page here.  Note this post was originally going to go up on MATRIXYSNTH-C, however I opted for a post here for the great synth pics below. Note the Qbert arcade cabinet top above the Buchla 200e!

EML Electrocomp 200 - VEMIA

"Excellent condition, rare interesting semi-modular with EML's usual character - both sonically and physically. Very solidly made, with chunky knobs, and a pleasure to use. Working perfectly, and in superb cosmetic condition - I nearly described it as 'near mint' which is pretty amazing for a 35-year-old instrument. Even the outside of the casework is excellent, and the case metalwork is shiny and not at all corroded. A fantastic way to get a slice of early synth history - this was designed before the Minimoog, 2600 etc; a museum-quality example; and a synth with a different character from any other range. 110V US power - but transformers are easy to find in Europe. You can guess the small scale of production when you see that the serial number was scratched on by hand (inside the power cable compartment). Thoroughly recommended. (Peter Forrest of VEMIA visited Jeff Murray, one of the EML founders, in January and saw the actual garage where these machines were made. Great location, really super guy, and excellent synthesisers!)"

"EML 200 is keyboard-less, making it more like an Expander module designed to interface directly with other EML equipment. Most notably, with the Model 300 manual controller which offered a 4x4 key matrix, pitch knobs, and an oscillator with envelope generator and VCA of its own. Today, you can use the 200 with analog synths other than EML with the properly modified CV/Gate connections and converters (its oscillators are a non-standard 1.20v/oct).

It does power up and the red power light is on in the pictures.

Overall in very good shape, with some scratches on the sides and back panel.

I did have them checked out, and had the necessary repairs\cleaning done to make them functional.

The unit was cleaned and tested. All the jacks, connections, and potenciometers were cleaned and checked.(Per the repair technician)

The sample and hold were repaired on this unit.

All original."
