Moog Sonic 6 SN 1627

via this auction

"The Moog looks excellent but the Contour Shaper, the articulator.. envelope shaper has been “broken” for a few years. At its prime the Moog’s tone oscillators where crystal clear, able to use saw-tooth waves, sine waves square waves and combine them in any way imaginable. Ring modulation, control generators, triggers, white noise, pink noise and pitch scalers could produce anything from a Bach invention to microtonal avant-garde radical compositions. As you can see from the pictures there are a few knobs missing...but the sliders are intact.

This Moog could be restored and back in shape for you to enjoy or sell.

The Moog Sonic 6 is a very interesting synthesizer and a rare find. It folds into a its own case and has its own built in speaker. I enjoyed using the Sonic VI for sound effects and for typical Moog type synth sounds and other sounds you expect from an analog synth. It has 2 oscillators, a ring modulator, sweet moog lowpass resonant filter, mixer section, TWO LFO's, adjustable scaling for microtones, VCA / envelope generator and external input for processing outside sources, gliss, pitchbender, 4 octave keyboard, etc. It's a really flexible synth and fun to play."

Electro Harmonix Superego

Published on Feb 1, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio
Update: video is back.

"A synth engine that performs fluid glissandos, and creates oscillator like synthesizer effects.

The Electro-Harmonix Superego Synth Engine effects pedal is a new and unique product that combines elements of sampling, synthesis and infinite sustain. The Superego allows you to freeze sound, gliss between frozen tones, layer sounds and place an external effects loop on only the effect. In addition, the Superego can detect new notes or chords and sustain them automatically without requiring you to step on the footswitch. It even lets you tweak attack and decay, or use its effects loop to invent novel synth patches.

The Superego has three modes: Latch, Momentary and Auto. A toggle switch at the center of the Superego chooses between the three. Momentary mode is not labeled in the artwork; it is the center (or eye) position of the 3-position toggle switch."

Electro-Harmonix HOG Octave Generator Synthesizer Guitar Effect

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. via this auction
I was going to pop this one up on MATRIXSYNTH-BB, but figured it was an interesting reminder of what else is out there in the synth world. Electro Harmonix pedals tend to cross over to the synth realm not only with their dedicated synth pedals like the HOG, but others as well. See the EHX label at the bottom of this post and scroll through posts for more.

"Generate everything from extreme sub bass to powerful multi-octave chords with this harmonic octave generator!

Blast off to a whole new universe of sounds with the Electro-Harmonix HOG, a polyphonic guitar synthesizer with NO special pickup required. It gives you complete control of up to 10 interval pitches including fifth and third intervals, glistening filter sweeps, and insane pitch bends. Dedicated filtering and envelope control, with numerous setup options, make the HOG a must-have performance instrument.

The HOG can simultaneously generate multiple octaves and harmonics from your input signal. Whether you play single notes, arpeggios or full chords, the HOG will track every note you play. In addition, the HOG has seven expression modes that enable you to modify your sounds using the included expression pedal, a MIDI controller, or the expression button on the HOG itself. There is also an amplitude envelope and a 2nd order low-pass filter with resonance. The optional EH Foot Controller (I am listing separately) allows you to store and load six presets.

You have control over the HOG's basic audio circuitry with an input gain slider (with clip LED), a dry output slider, and a bypass switch. Audio I/O includes 1/4" Hi-Z input, 1/4" output, and a buffered direct output jack. The voice controls let you access the polyphonic synthesizer section. There are 10 voice sliders on the HOG, each with a white cap with a black line that controls the output volume for its voice. The ten sliders let you generate notes two octaves down, one octave down, the incoming signal, a fifth up, one octave up, an octave up plus a fifth, two octaves up, two octaves up plus a third, three octaves up, and four octaves up. The selectable envelope section controls the amplitude attack or decay of the voices, with separate sliders for the lower five voices and upper five voices.

The Spectral Gate button activates circuitry that emphasizes the loudest frequency or harmonic and reduces the volumes of all other present frequencies and harmonics. The filter frequency slider controls the cutoff or peak frequency of the low pass filter, while the filter resonance slider controls the Q or peak of the filter.

The HOG's seven different expression modes are selected consecutively by the expression mode switch: bend one octave, bend one step, volume, freeze plus gliss, freeze plus volume, wah-wah, and a filter. There is also an expression reverse mode and you can control the expression modes externally with an expression pedal or modulate any of the expression modes using MIDI pitch bend.

Gravity, The Sonic Manipulator.wmv

YouTube Uploaded by sonicmanipulator on Mar 16, 2012

"This one's a bit more up to date......off my last CD (must get busy on a new one) 'Spaceman'
I used a lot of breath controlled brass with the Yamaha VL70M. A great physical modeling synth from the late 90's. A bit of Stravinsky like angst in the final climax before gravity wins and drags you back to earth.

Hope you like it. Claude Woodward - The Sonic Manipulator.

Lot's of old synths used on it but I particularly like the solo on my modified Moog Sonic Six with 'Vibe Bar' & gliss strip.

Enjoy.......

Schubert SERENADE For Theremin & Continuum

YouTube Uploaded by copperleaves on Jul 9, 2011

"Some of my online theremin friends didn't want me to record this theremin transcription of Franz Schubert's SERENADE. They said it was too schlocky and romantic and that I shouldn't waste my time on it! Nevertheless, it remains one of the most popular and recognizable melodies from one of my favorite composers. This arrangement is for theremin and Haken continuum (accompanied by the Korg TRITON EXTREME). The continuum is playing the delicate recorder/flageolet sound that follows the theremin. Although I think my brain could have played all three instruments at once, I just don't have enough arms and hands, so I prepared the track and played the theremin live.

In the summertime, I often use my barn for music. The barn was built in the 1860's during the American civil war and no nails were used in its construction. It is made entirely of hardwoods and held together with expertly fitted joints and wooden spikes. When you play music in it, the whole building vibrates like the soundbox of a giant bass or cello. Unfortunately it isn't very well insulated and it isn't heated so it is useless for music in the winter. But it's great in the summer!

According to music historians the Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) wrote this composition in the summer of 1826 in a beer hall, jotting the notes down on the back of a menu. He had apparently stopped in to the place to have a couple of pints and cool off.

The theremin in the video is a Moog Ethervox. The Haken continuum is a continuous controller which, unlike the theremin, does not have a sound of its own. It can sound like just about anything you want and, like the theremin, can elegantly slide from one end of its range to the other in a seamless "gliss". It is also polyphonic and has 16 voices (the theremin is monophonic with only one voice).

I was going to call this piece, "Schubert & the theremin & the continuum go to Bollywood" because I am used to wearing Indian clothes when the weather is particularly hot (as it was today when I recorded this). Natural air conditioning!"

Gorillaz to Make First iPad Only Album?

via MTV
"Though the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am has been touting the wonders of recording on an iPad, Albarn said he was keen to record the world's first iPad-only album."

There have been plenty of iPad only tracks, but an entire album? I forget if any have been made. If you know, feel free to comment or shoot me an email.

Update: We might have found one. iMatik previously posted here on March 15, 2010. Thanks goes to soh_la in the comments for the reminder. Note it obviously depends on how it's defined. iPad vs. iPhone, use of any external samples and/or mixing, etc...

Update on iMatik: "[We] did use an analog bus compressor and plugins on my iPhone album, my main rule was that all sounds originate from the phone, but that I could process them a little if needed..."

Update via UK in the comments: "The first iPad album is 'The iPad Album' released worldwide by Mark Jenkins in October 2010. This was pretty widely publicized at the time and the album performed live in Holland.

The CD has been available since then internationally through

www.groove.nl

and through

www.markjenkins.co (not dot com. - this is a dot co domain)"

Update: new post on MATRIXSYNTH-C

Update: the Gorillaz iPad only album is titled THE FAll.

New 2010 Optigan Disc - SURF ROCK!

YouTube via peahix — June 01, 2010 —

"Now available for pre-order at http://www.optigan.com/shoptigan/inde... is our brand new Optigan disc: SURF ROCK! When we've reached 15 pre-orders, we'll go to press with the limited run of 25 discs.

Surf's up! It's time to wax the board and catch a wave! Optigan.com is proud to present Surf Rock , featuring the vintage sounds of the 1960's surf scene. For this music program disc, we've gone into the recording studio with a couple of SoCal's best surf rockers.

Reverb enthusiast Matt Quilter is one-half of the guitar assault from the award-winning Reventlos http://www.reventlos.com/ whose quirky instro albums alternately intrigue and horrify surf music purists. In addition to his duties on guitar, he co-produced the documentary feature Pounding Surf! http://www.surfdrums.com/surfdrums.html an insider's look at the SoCal surf music scene from 1961 to the present day. For the Optigan session, he chose from his arsenal a Fender Stratocaster played through a blond Fender Tremolux and Reverb unit, both from 1963.

Lee "Kix" rarely strays from playing Death-Surf / Afro-Billy music with the Reventlos. However in days past he has recorded with world famous instrumental guitar gods, The Ventures. As a veteran of many Linn Drum sessions, Kix is no stranger to having his drums sampled for posterity. The Optigan session was recorded with vintage 1960's Oaklawn Camco drums, 20x14 bass drum and 14x5.5 metal snare. T he 12x8 and 14x10 toms used in the session were obtained when Kix was a Los Angeles Camco endorsee in the mid-70's.

Guitar and Bass played by Matt Quilter.
Drums played by William Lee "Kix".
Music arranged by Matt Quilter and William Lee "Kix".
Music produced, edited, and mastered by Pea Hicks.
Engineered and Mixed by Jon O'Brien. Recorded at The Music Box Studios, Garden Grove CA http://themusicboxstudios.com/
Disc creation software, disc production cover artwork and jacket layout by Robert Becker .
Cover artwork by Mark Crafford.

RHYTHMS: 4/4

The award winning HOG (Harmonic Octave Generator) is a totally polyphonic guitar synthesizer offering complete control of up to 10 interval pitches. NO glitches and NO special pickup needed. Generate extreme sub bass to powerful multi-octave chords. Convert your 6 string into a 12 string, create a realistic B3 organ. Amazing on guitar but works well with any instrument. * Flawless polyphonic glitch-free tracking across the entire range! * Controllable harmonic intervals: -2 octaves, -1 octave, Original note, +5th, +1 octave, +1 octave +5th, +2 octaves, +2 octaves + 3rd, +3 octaves, +4 octaves. * Works directly from your instrument's output * Expression pedal (included) with 7 selectable expression modes: +/- 1 octave and 1 step pitch bend, freeze + gliss, volume, wah and filter frequency * Pitch Bend expression mode turns the HOG into a whammy pedal * Freeze expression mode is a new guitar effect never heard before. Freeze allows the musician to freeze a note or chord so you can play over it or slide to new notes just like a keyboardist would do when using portamento * Dedicated resonant filtering with sweepable frequency control * Amplitude envelope control allowing the musician to lengthen a note's attack, for swell effects, or to increase a note's decay speed * Separate lower and upper harmonic region amplitude envelopes * MIDI in allows expression control using MIDI pitch bend * 9LDC-500 power supply included" Update via Scott of EHX:
"Bill Ruppert, a studio musician in Chicago, created this neat video in which he uses an Electro-Harmonix HOG to recreate the very well-known synth sounds from The Who's 'Won't Get Fooled Again.'

My understanding is that in the original song, Pete Townsend combined a 1968 Lowrey Berkshire Deluxe TBO-1 organ with an EMS VCS3 mk1 synthesizer. Bill gets damn close with his Electro-Harmonix HOG, plus a bit of echo from his Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai."

Yamaha CS01 New Hybrid Waveforms Modification

YouTube via rolandsh1000
"Inspired by some work by Plutonique9, I opened up my Yamaha CS01 analog monophonic mini-synth and discovered that you can make the tone generator chip generate (at least) 3 new hybrid waveforms.

There are some caveats:
-depending on the waveform you hybridize, the footage switch gets out of wack on one of the settings (but you still get 3 of the 4 footages working correctly and thus the full range of the keyboard).
- on that one wacked out footage setting, any glissando means a drone on one note and a walk-up/walk-down gliss"

Electro Harmonix HOG

Title link takes you to shots via this auction. I know these aren't knew, just never took the time to check one out. Anyone know how these sound? Off to check the Tube...

"The Electro-Harmonix HOG is a totally polyphonic guitar synthesizer, giving the user complete control of up to 10 interval pitches. Musicians can unveil an entirely new tone potential with anything from extreme sub bass to powerful multi-octave chords, including fifth and third intervals. Dedicated Filtering and envelope control, with numerous setup options, make the HOG a must-have performance instrument. And NO special pickup is required and NO glitches are created.

Features include:

#10 intervals of pitch can be mixed by using 10 surface faders, which may then be played polyphonically with perfect tracking:

· 1 octaves down · 1 octave + a perfect fifth
· 2 octaves down · 2 octaves up
· Original pitch · 2 octaves up + a major third
· One Fifth up · 3 octaves up
· 1 octave up · 4 octaves up

#Six unique expression modes are accessible via the Exp button, expression pedal*and MIDI. Octave bends, step bends, volume control, user defined Wah-Wah, Filter control, plus two unique freeze modes: With Freeze Gliss, an expression pedal freezes a chord while letting you play over it having your frozen notes gliss to meet your new notes. The Freeze Volume freezes a chord allowing you to control its volume, with an expression pedal, as you play on top of it.

#An external “whammy” pedal and a momentary surface mounted Exp button, allow for real-time access and manipulation of all of the above expression modes. A new level of performance interaction.

#Dual Envelope generators that work with both the higher and lower frequency ranges. Allows unique contours of attack and release in two different harmonic regions.

#12 dB per octave 2-pole low pass filter and resonance controls manipulate the tone while also being a critical element within the expression modes.

#Surface Foot access for True Bypass, expression control and envelope engagement.

#Store performance presets when you use the optional external Electro-Harmonix foot controller. 9LDC-500 power supply included"
