"South Park" meets Perrey & Countryman!

via Dana Countryman on Facebook

"Our song "Chicken on the Rocks" is used on an episode of "South Park"!
What is the world coming to???

Hey all,
The Comedy Central TV show "South Park" may be pretty crass and tasteless to some (including me), but they did have the good taste to use about 30 seconds from my 2006 track, "Chicken on the Rocks," recorded with my pal, Jean-Jacques Perrey.

The episode was officially first aired on March 31st, 2010, and is now archived here:

http://www.southparkstudios.com/episodes/267110

Our song is behind dialogue between 13:35 and 13:58.

WARNING! The subject matter is not for kids, or my dad - the retired Baptist minister!

The show has never been one of my personal favorites, but I seem to like it a whole lot better when they're paying a nice chunk of cash to use a song of ours!

That's a combo of my my synthesizer playing and Jean-Jacques' Ondioline on the track, recorded here in my studio in 2006!

YouTube via happymoogman.

follow-up to this post.

"Jean-Jacques Perrey makes a 1966 appearance on popular game show, "I've Got A Secret". Steve Allen is the host. In this episode Perrey appears with live musicians, and simulates their real instruments' sounds with the sounds of the electronic Ondioline.

At the end of this episode, Gershon Kingsley comes onstage, and Perrey & Kinglsey play a "live" version of "Spooks in Space" - one of the tunes from their "The In Sound from Way Out!" album. This is the only known television appearance of Perrey & Kingsley."

http://ondioline.com

A new website resource for the Ondioline is coming. "Web page will include: History ~FAQ ~ Misconceptions ~ Photos ~ Sound Files ~ List of Ondioline Users ~ Ondi's Spotted on Sale ~ Who Repairs Ondi's ~ Schematics ~ Tuning Instructions"

Note this is via Dana Countryman who plays with Jean-Jacques Perrey, who's instrument of choice is the Ondioline. I was actually fortunate enough to see the two play live. Jean-Jacques Perrey had his Ondioline and Dana Countryman had a large Synthesizers.com modular. You can see a video from the performance below. A search for Jean-Jacques Perrey will bring up more posts. Definitely worth the time to check out.

Hope you enjoy this!"

SY MANN - SWITCHED ON SANTA - Tijuana Christmas (1970)

YouTube via cosmocorps2000.

Don't miss the kawazy vid below. "SY MANN showed his earliest musical talent at age 6 when he began to correct mistakes, made by his older sister who was then a cello student, by reaching up to the keyboard of the family player-piano and striking the "right notes". His parents took him to a piano instructor when he was 7 and in a short time it was discovered that he possessed absolute pitch. During public school assemblies he gave demonstrations of this phenomenon to the applause and wonder of his classmates and teachers. He continued his music education at NYU. Excelling in his music studies, Sy was elected to membership in the National Honorary music fraternity, PHI MU ALPHA SINFONIA and, later, held the post of student president of the music department of NYU School of Education. Back in civilian life after almost 4 years of service, Sy returned to NYU for his B.S. degree in Music Education, now a married man and father of a baby boy. Not particularly desirous of entering the teaching field, Sy continued with performing engagements, playing for most of show business' top acts as well as stints with the bands of Alvino Ray and Benny Goodman. In 1949 he entered the radio field as staff pianist and arranger for New York's top independent station WNEW. He then established himself in the recording, jingle and film music fields. In 1954 he joined the CBS music staff and currently is pianist-arranger on the Arthur Godfrey Show where he doubles on trumpet, vibraphone, clavietta, electric harpsichord and other assorted keyboard instruments. He has contributed his talents to numerous stars like Barbra Streisand, Tiny Tim, Sammy Davis, Connie Francis. Anybody who plays piano can play The Moog Synthesizer. It is a computer like instrument with a piano keyboard. Since only one note sounds at a time to make music one needs a multi-track tape recorder to record each line of music separately. An electronic engineer is needed not only for the circuitry but also to program the millions of different sound combinations available — also each time the sound is changed The Moog has to be tuned! It takes about one hour of recording time to produce 30 seconds of listenable music. In this album Sy takes the Moog Synthesizer and creates today's electronic Christmas tree out of this new musical wonder. The Moog, a strange machine of lights, cords, inputs and outputs enters the festive world of the merriest season of all. It's a wonderful gift for today's caroleers. Sy Mann giftwraps all your Christmas favorites in the most exciting musical sound, and puts them under your glittering tree. Gift tagged to read 'Merry Christmas from The Moog!'"

SY MANN - SWITCHED ON SANTA - My Favorite Things (1970)

"MUSIC: Sy Mann - My Favorite Things from the album SWITCHED ON SANTA! (1970) One of this numerous Moog records from the past. Now the Moog plays popular xmas songs VIDEO: Scenes from Tales From The Crypt (GB 1972) Episode: All Through The House Starring Joan Collins After Joanne Clayton (Joan Collins) kills her husband on Christmas Eve, she prepares to hide his body but hears a radio announcement stating that a homicidal maniac (Oliver MacGreevy) is on the loose. She sees the maniac outside her house but can't call the police because of her husband's body. The segment ends with the maniac, dressed as Santa Claus, being let into the house by Joanne's little daughter. He strangles Joanne to death. (from Wikipedia)."

Update via Mal in the comments: "This was recorded in Jean-Jacques Perrey's Recording studio in Manhattan using his (and Gershon Kingsley's) moog modular. Jean-jacques engineered the album (uncredited) and I also believe that manny of the tracks were actually arranged and recorded by him. Also... Santa on the front cover is in fact Jean-Jacques Perrey!!!"

Curtis Roads Part 1: The Breakdown

YouTube via DellLounge

"Curtis Roads is a true composer. While he may not be a superstar hitmaker producing songs for Madonna and Brittany Spears, his scholarly approach is to create sounds youve never heard before. Using a process known as granular synthesis and software he invented, Roads breaks swarms of sounds down into millisecond-long slivers."

Curtis Roads Part 2: Getting Granular

"Microsound encompasses any sound thats so short it couldnt fit on the normal musical time scale. In terms of measurement, youre talking anywhere from 10 milliseconds to 1/10 of a second."

Curtis Roads Part 3: Build It Up

"No doubt about it, Curtis Roads compositions are virtuosic. Even though a single piece can take half a decade or longer to make, hes released tons of recordings and has more in the works."

Update via Rory VICE/VBS.tv Be sure to see the comments of this post for more info as well.

"There are two divergent streams in 20th century electronic music: The one most people are familiar with starts out with goofballs like Jean-Jacques Perrey and Vangelis noodling around on synthesizers and eventually devolves into Kaja Googoo. Curtis Roads is part of the other path, the one that follows insane geniuses like Stockhausen and Morton Subotnik and uses whatever-period-it-happens-to-be's state-of-the-art computer technology to produce compositions that completely defy conventional music logic and sometimes sound more like a freaked-out ATM than tunes you put on and listen to.

Professor Roads' primary interests/methods are granular and pulsar synthesis. We're still trying to wrap our brains around pulsar, but from what we gather granular synthesis is where you break down individual notes and sounds into teensy tiny little bits (or "grains") and then reassemble them into music full of such microscopic nuances that it could only be fully appreciated by a man who's like some kind of computer-man or something. There's also this thing where the reconstituted microsounds don't produce actual, distinctive tones but nebulous sound masses that can be modulated in ways that regular sounds can't which we don't fully understand despite Roads' best efforts at explaining."
