"Enter the First Annual Moog Circuit Bending Challenge

Moog Music was born when a young Bob Moog, who considered himself a geeky, socially awkward kid with a passion for electronics and music started tinkering with electronic circuitry. As a boy, Moog built small radios, amps and three note organs in his basement workshop with his father & the rest is history. In celebration of this creative curiosity, Moog and Moogfest 2010 are sponsoring a circuit bending challenge, to honor all those that lick and stick, modify signals and jump traces.

How to Enter:
1. Procure a battery-powered sound-making device
2. Bend it by any means necessary.
3. Document the bend process and outcome with video with audio (required). The better you document, the better we can judge. All videos must be uploaded by midnight eastern time on Monday October 18th, 2010.
4. Upload the video to YouTube and tag with “moog circuit bending competition 2010” and “Moogfest 2010”.
5. Send an email with the subject Moog Circuit Bending Challenge 2010 to info@moogmusic.com with the YouTube links to your entry.

Finals:
The top 3 contestants will be chosen as finalists on Friday, October 22, 2010 and win weekend passes to Moogfest 2010 as well as a Moog merch package. At Moogfest the 3 finalists will be given a workstation in the Moogaplex, the same toy and the same bag of tools (which includes a soldering iron, wire, switches, potentiometers of varying degrees, resistors, capacitors, heat shrink, bread boards, diodes, plus more surprises). Each finalist will have from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 30 & Sunday, October 31 to bend the toy at their workstations. Grand prize winner will be chosen by a Moog Music Engineer at 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 31.

Grand Prize winner receives a Moog Pedal Board which includes one of each Moogerfooger (MF-101 Low Pass Filter, MF-102 Ring Mod, MF-103 Phaser, MF-104Z Analog Delay, MF-105M Midi MuRF, MF-107 ) and a Multi-Pedal (MP-201). [and a Slim Phatty]

"Interested in a one of a kind Super Rare Unique Moog Modular 18 Oscillators Mean Machine ?

If you want a Moog modular this is the one.

All the most important modules are here and more. 2 complete sets of filters, 2 filterbanks and
(901c & 1630 very hard to find) among others. From late 60s to early 70s.

It’s almost like having 2 moog systems in one. ( IIIc and system 55 )+ compliment B.

All wood except the complement B is in tolex.

There’s a vintage deluxe memory-man delay on the top tier and sounds amazing. The two bottom cabinets are original the other 3 custom I Think. If you remake new cabinets this unique modular will look amazing.

I also have the joystick 🕹 and moog drum snare trigger.

It’s commes with 4 power supply the main big one original and the other 3 custom.

I didn’t have time to build the power supply for the phase shifter 1630 because the module needs -15v/+15v. Every thing is working but these old synths after shipping needs some tune up or calibration."

Moog plans to continue building a limited quantity of units at their factory in downtown Asheville while parts and materials last, which is not expected to be more than two months. The Little Phatty was released in 2006 as a tribute to the life and legacy of Moog Music founder and synthesizer pioneer, Bob Moog. Following the passing of Dr. Moog, The Little Phatty was the first Moog synthesizer designed by Moog Music's Chief Engineer, Cyril Lance.

MOOG MUSIC ANNOUNCES PURCHASE OF NEW HEADQUARTERS IN ASHEVILLE, N.C.
"For Release May 21, 2010. Asheville, NC – Moog Music, in conjunction with the City of Asheville and the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville Buncombe County, is pleased to announce a $2.5 million investment in a new downtown Asheville company headquarters. On May 18, 2010, Moog Music finalized the purchase of four vacant, 1920 era buildings 160-170 Broadway St.; the Northern Gateway into downtown Asheville.

The Broadway site was chosen by Moog Music for its close proximity to the downtown music venues and river arts district. “This location is ideal for Moog and our employees; we will bring commerce, economic vitality and livability to this once neglected entrance to the city,” said Michael Adams, President of Moog Music. “Our plans include an extensive renovation of the structure that will transform the façade from an eyesore to a landmark that embodies Moog’s spirit of innovation, one that our company and our community can be proud of.”

The location will house the company’s 35 employees engaged in worldwide sales and marketing, research and development, and manufacturing operations. Adams continued, “The ambience of the building was the primary selection criteria. I was looking for a building that had wood floors, old brick, and wide open spaces. Creativity drives Moog and this old building, once transformed, will inspire our entire team to continue this mission.”

“This redevelopment by Moog brings the Broadway corridor one step closer to the vision long advocated by city and community planners,” said City of Asheville Mayor, Terry Bellamy. “The City is excited to welcome an employer like Moog whose international reputation for excellence, innovation and creativity will complement our vibrant downtown community.” Moog Music has been selected by the City to receive $50,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds in support of the project. As part of this expansion and expected company growth, Moog anticipates adding an additional 10 – 15 employees over the next three years.

“The County applauds Moog Music on this exciting expansion and its continued contributions to our economy and workforce. The move will not only strengthen our advanced manufacturing economy but enhance Asheville’s reputation as a premier music and arts destination.” said David Gantt, Chair of the Buncombe County Commission. Moog Music will begin renovations on the Broadway site in the coming weeks with the use of local architect, Keith Hargrove, and local contractor, H&M Constructors. Work should be completed in late 2010.

"Exhibition features Keith Emerson's Legendary “Monster Moog” Modular Synthesizer through October 18th, 2009

CARSLBAD, CA/ASHEVILLE, NC – The Museum of Making Music (Carlsbad, CA), in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation, has opened Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog exhibition, to run through April 30, 2010. The exhibit is the first of its kind, marking the first public display of the artifacts from Bob Moog’s archives and an examination of the impact of his work on the world of music.

MONSTER MOOG INSTALLATION
On August 30th, Keith Emerson's (Emerson, Lake and Palmer, The Nice) mammoth “Monster Moog” modular synthesizer was added to the exhibit after it was featured the previous evening in a musical celebration of the exhibit opening by Emerson and Erik Norlander. Emerson used this remarkable instrument on numerous recordings over the past 40 years, including his solo in “Lucky Man” (1969), possibly the most popular synth solo in history. He also used the synthesizer on countless world tours and is generally credited with pioneering the use of the Moog modular as a touring musician.

The “Monster Moog” began as a modest system, but grew over time as Emerson
requested that Moog create custom additions for his touring instrument, including extra modules, custom sample-and-hold, and several pre-sets, an innovative addition for that time. The synthesizer grew into a massive cabinet of five sections and over 75 modules. It stands more than four feet above its special base – almost 8 feet high. Its sound is noticeably clearer and stronger than any other keyboard Emerson plays – it is an instrument of significance and legend, and arguably the most famous synthesizer of all time.

Bob Moog and Keith Emerson enjoyed a special relationship of toolmaker and musician that grew in to a lifelong friendship. Moog is noted for listening to musician's needs and technical specifications which he then used to improve his instruments: This dynamic is explored throughout the Waves exhibit.

"MOOGFEST 2010 ANNOUNCES RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY MOOG WORKSHOPS AND PANELS AT THE MOOGAPLEX

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND – 10/29-10/31 IN ASHEVILLE, NC
MoogFest 2010, the extraordinary three-day festival which celebrates the innovative spirit of sonic pioneer Robert Moog, during Halloween weekend, October 29-31, in Asheville, NC, has already announced most of its outstanding lineup. Now, in addition to MoogFest’s excellent musical offerings, the festival will also give attendees the opportunity to dig deeper into the world of Moog with a wide range of panel discussions and workshops.

The Red Bull Music Academy has teamed up with AC Entertainment, Moog Music and the Bob Moog Foundation to bring together top minds in history, technology and education of Moog. Experts, ranging from Bob's colleagues in the seminal days of synthesis to the more contemporary sound sculptors of today, are coming from around the country to share their ideas and vast experiences. The Bob Moog Foundation will be responsible for the historical content at MoogFest, including items from Bob Moog's archives such as rarely seen vintage photographs and historic audio clips from recently restored reel-to-reel tapes.

Saul is a killer guitarist who has worked with Adrian Belew, Ace Frehley, Crash Test Dummies. He will integrate the Moog Guitar, Moogerfoogers, Multi-Pedal, and Little Phatty into an exploration of the guitars amazing capabilities.

All panels, demonstrations, and workshops will take place between Noon and 6:30 PM EST at the Moogaplex, located at the Haywood Park complex. An Invention That Revolutionized Music

Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 11:15 a.m., New Academic Building, South Campus

Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY … Hofstra University Professor Emeritus of Music Herbert Deutsch will be honored for his years of service to the University and his place in music history in a special ceremony on April 14, 2010, at 11:15 a.m. The ceremony will see the unveiling of a display featuring the Moog synthesizer, co-created by Dr. Robert Moog and Professor Deutsch in 1964 –an invention that changed the course of music history.

The display is situated in Hofstra’s New Academic Building, located on the South Campus. In addition to Hofstra students, alumni, faculty and administrators, the ceremony will be attended by Michael Adams, president of Moog Music, located in Asheville, North Carolina.

Professor Deutsch, who is a resident of Massapequa Park, NY, is also a Hofstra alumnus, having graduated in 1956 with a B.S. in education. He returned to the University as a professor in the early 1960s. At a 1963 New York State School Music Association Conference, Professor Deutsch met Dr. Robert Moog , who invited him to collaborate on the design and development of a music synthesizer. Professor Deutsch received a $200 research grant from Hofstra to be used toward expenses on the project. Dr. Moog and Professor Deutsch designed the first prototype synthesizer in July 1964 and completed its construction by the fall of that same year.

Professor Deutsch is also a well-known composer, who has received approximately 15 ASCAP awards and more than 20 Meet the Composer grants. In 2007 he was named Music Educator of Note by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. A composer of music in various media, Professor Deutsch’s work has been widely performed and commissioned works have been featured at national and regional conferences of The Music Educators National Conference, Small Computers and the Arts Network, the Society for Electro acoustic Music in the United States and other organizations.

In 1972 he co-founded and currently serves as president of the Long Island Composers Alliance (LICA). He has served several previous terms as president and is also the Alliance’s archivist. In 1973 he created the first "Music By and For Students" concert for LICA. During his teaching career at Hofstra, he founded the Jazz Ensemble, the Electronic Music Studios, The New Music Ensemble and developed B.S. degree programs in Composition/Theory, Jazz & Commercial Music and Music Merchandising.

The display that will be featured at the April 14 ceremony showcases not only Hofstra’s first synthesizer but also correspondence from Dr. Moog and a congratulatory letter from Hofstra confirming Professor Deutsch’s $200 research grant.

Bob Moog Foundation To Raffle Lou Reed's Moog Guitar

"March 8, 2010

Asheville, NC --- The Bob Moog Foundation announces a once in a lifetime raffle opportunity to begin Tuesday March 9, 2010 at 12pm (EST). The Foundation will be selling $50 raffle tickets for a chance to win one of Lou Reed's Moog Guitars. Only 200 tickets will be made available. Participants can purchase raffle tickets online at the Foundation's online store http://moogfoundation.org/shop. The raffle will close when the 200 tickets have been sold and a winner will be chosen by an automated random selector and notified via email. All proceeds go to benefit the programs of the Bob Moog Foundation. Employees and volunteers of Moog Music, the Bob Moog Foundation and Lou Reed are not eligible to participate in the auction.

Moog Music Inc., the company which carries on the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog through its innovative instruments, is donating the Paul Vo Collector Edition (1 of only 300) Moog Guitar, serial #005, signed and played by Lou Reed. The strikingly beautiful instrument is a maple top Tiger Eye Flame with an ash body, maple neck and ebony fret board. Reed has signed the front of the guitar; his labels for the guitar's controls remain on the instrument as well as the brackets for his guitar strap.


Lou Reed, best known as the former guitarist, vocalist and principle songwriter for the experimental rock band Velvet Underground, has enjoyed a prolific career as a solo guitarist known for the pioneering of many sound effects including distortion, high volume feedback and nonstandard tunings. His love affair with the innovative Moog Guitar began early, as he played the instrument in its prototype phase. Reed experiences the Moog Guitar for the first time in this YouTube video. Upon hearing the guitar for the first time, Reed exclaimed “This is amazing....this opens the door”. Reed performed on the Moog Guitar on the David Lettermen Show in the fall of 2008.

Carlsbad, CA/Asheville, NC – The Museum of Making Music and The Bob Moog Foundation announce Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog exhibition to run from August 29, 2009 – April 30, 2010 at the Museum’s facilities in Carlsbad, California. The exhibit is the first of its kind, marking the first public display of the artifacts from Bob Moog’s archives.

Bob Moog (1934-2005) was a pioneer in the field of electronic music, inventing the Moog synthesizer in 1964. His invention made synthesis accessible to musicians for the first time and in doing so provided them with new realms of sonic expression. The instrument revolutionized the face of music and was used by such early synthesists as Wendy Carlos, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Jan Hammer, and more.

Moog's career spanned over 50 years and his work left an indelible impact on music, musicians and music-lovers alike. Tens of thousands of musicians worldwide were, and continue to be, inspired by Moog's work, and the sonic palette it provides.

Bob Moog was awarded two GRAMMYs for his work: the NARAS Trustee's Award in 1970 and Award for Technical Achievement in 2002. He also won the Polar Music prize in 2001 from the King of Sweden and numerous other awards that recognized his contributions.

The exhibition, which highlights the inventor's career and the impact that it had on the world of music, will feature rare vintage synthesizers and other related Moog instruments and memorabilia from the Bob Moog Archives and from various private collections. A custom video presentation created by Moog historian and exhibit consultant Brian Kehew will form a central part of the exhibit. The exhibit will explore the numerous musicians, engineers and colleagues who played a vital role in the evolution of the Moog sound and the relationship between and the inventor/toolmaker and the musician, as well as the genesis of a variety of musical interfaces.

The instruments featured in the exhibit will trace the history of Moog’s work. The exhibit begins with vintage theremins and a prototype of the first modular synthesizer which originally belonged to Herb Deutsch, an experimental music composer from Long Island whose 1963 meeting with Dr. Bob Moog would help define the synthesizer as a musical instrument, and set a course for the future of electronic music. Other excellent examples of modular instruments from the late 1960s and early 1970s will be on exhibit, most notably Keith Emerson’s famous “Monster Moog” will be featured for the first time as a part of the museum display.

The exhibition will highlight and explore crucial steps that were taken in the advancement of the Moog synthesizer during the years following the development of the modular system. The display will showcase a sequence of models that led to the emergence of more compact instruments, such as the Minimoog. The main impetus behind this tremendous work was Moog’s vision to create a portable electronic music studio on which musicians could compose and perform.

The opening weekend (August 29 -31) will kick off with a launch of the Moog exhibition featuring an intimate musical performances by Keith Emerson and Erik Norlander and talks by Larry Fast and Brian Kehew.

Tickets for the opening weekend events can be purchased on the Museum's website beginning August 3, 2009. The Museum is planning an array of exciting programming throughout the seven month exhibition with panel discussions featuring people who collaborated with Moog throughout his lifetime, and concerts featuring top synthesists. The ultimate goal of this exhibition and its programs is to highlight Moog's career while celebrating synthesis as a whole.

Asheville, NC, October 11, 2014 — Tomorrow, October 12, 2014, marks the 50 Year anniversary of the unveiling of the Moog modular synthesizer at the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) New York convention. On that day in 1964, Dr. Robert Moog introduced the world to a completely new type of instrument that would go on to change the course of music history and influence decades of future instrument design.

The Moog modular synthesizer was comprised of individual electronic modules, housed in a wooden frame, and it made use of voltage-control as a new way of creating powerful sounds that had never been heard before.

After its debut at AES, the scientific-looking Moog modular instrument that made extraordinary new sounds with rapid alterations and exotic tonal colors, started to gain in popularity. Musicians began to establish the Moog system as the archetype of synthesis. One of the earliest and most famous artists to adopt the new instrument was Keith Emerson, keyboardist for the innovative band Emerson Lake and Palmer. Touring the world for over forty years with this unique instrument, Emerson has made his Moog modular system the most recognizable synthesizer of all time.

The 50th Anniversary of the Moog Modular is a historical landmark for musical instrument design and popular music. In celebration of this momentous occasion, Moog Music has faithfully and painstakingly recreated Keith Emerson’s Moog modular. This new Emerson Moog Modular System (EMMS) utilizes original design material and parts to duplicate each facet of Mr. Emerson’s custom instrument down to the smallest detail. Today, for the first time at Moogfest 2014, Moog Music reveals its three year effort faithfully recreating the iconic Emerson Moog Modular.

In the intervening 50 years since the advent of the first Moog synthesizer, people have steadily come to appreciate the power and flexibility of the early Moog modular systems. Now in 2014, 60 years after Bob Moog started his electronic musical instrument company, with great respect for the tradition, design, and craftsmanship of the original Moog modular systems, Moog Music proudly announces the recreation of arguably the most famous synthesizer in history--Keith Emerson’s Moog Modular System.

Over the last 3 years Moog Music has set out to research and build a faithful recreation of this highly complex, custom instrument. Using the original documentation as well as circuit board and art files for nearly every original Moog module, Moog Engineers have painstakingly recreated the original Emerson Modular System. The new Emerson Moog Modular System is comprised of handcrafted Moog modules built from the original circuit designs and are true recreations of the originals, utilizing the same hand assembly methods used in the Moog Music factory in Trumansburg, NY in 1969. The modules in the new Emerson Moog Modular System are built just as the originals were, by hand-stuffing and hand-soldering components to circuit boards, and using traditional wiring methods. Even the front panels are photo-etched aluminum (a rare process now), which is the classic and durable, look of vintage Moog modules.

Herb Deutsch Has Passed Away

Herb Deutsch passed away yesterday. He was born on Feb 9th, 1932, making him 90 at the time of his passing. If you come to this site you know who he is. You can find pages of posts featuring him here. He was constantly active in the synth community, from it's birth as the co-inventor of the Moog Synthesizer with Bob Moog, to this day. I thought I would share the recent GIANTS video featuring him above from February this year.

When the greats pass away, I like to capture images and bios at the time of their passing. To the left is Herb Deutsch's current Facebook profile image. Directly below that is the last update of his posted on December 7. Below that is an image from the Wikipia page for him with the text that immediately follows. Finally, below that are some images of him from the early days from Moog Music's Herb Deutsch Looks Back on the Early Days of Electronic Music tribute.

He and Morton Subotnick likely had the greatest influences on the design of synthesisers as we know them. Herb brought us the tonal influence via the keyboard as the direct interface for a synthsizer and Subotnick brought us atonal sound exploration akin to tape manipulation.

Herbert A. Deutsch (February, 1932 - 9 December 2022[1]) was an American composer, inventor, and educator. Currently professor emeritus of electronic music and composition at Hofstra University, he is best known for co-inventing the Moog Synthesizer with Bob Moog in 1964.

Early life and education
Deutsch was born in 1932 in Baldwin, Nassau County, New York. At the age of four, he first realized he had a musical gift. Through his childhood, he studied music and began composing at a young age. Deutsch attended the Manhattan School of Music, earning his B.A. and M.A. there.

Work with Moog
Deutsch had assembled a theremin based on Moog's design in 1962 and in November, 1963 he introduced himself to Moog at a music-education conference in Rochester, NY.[3] In 1964 Moog and Deutsch started investigating the possibilities of a new instrument to aid composers.[4] Deutsch has been credited with the keyboard interface of the Moog.[4] He composed the first piece ever for the Moog ("Jazz Images - A Worksong and Blues"[3]) and performed early Moog concerts at The Town Hall and The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1969's Jazz in the Garden [5]).[6] The prototype Moog synthesizer, developed by Bob Moog and Herbert Deutsch in 1964, is part of the collections of The Henry Ford museum.[7]

Career
Deutsch was a dedicated educator. In the early 1970s he taught at St. Agnes High School in Rockville Centre, New York. He has taught at Hofstra University for over 50 years and was twice the chair of the music department. Deutsch co-founded the Long Island Composers Alliance in 1972, and worked with music foundation NYSSMA. In 1994 he proposed its Electronic Music Composition Showcase.[8]

Remembering Bob Moog

Today marks the fourth year of Bob Moog's passing. Play a little something for him today.

Update: Mark Pulver's Moog tattoo. Mark was good friends with Bob Moog. I remember him getting this tattoo after his passing.

Music or related to some inventions that have been used in Moog products (like the
Bode frequency shifter). This is not to take away from Bob, but I'm sure he would
have been the first to point out that some other guy had invented something. The

Update on the hockey game via brian in the comments: "It's not called Moog hockey, but "Super Chexx" hockey. Sadly, the Super Chexx game has ALWAYS been collectible in the arcade world anyway, due to it's clear plastic bubble look and the sound effects.

With "sound by Moog" written up there at the top as I recall. It sounds REALLY bad, but grainy as hell in a good way. I'd be surprised if it was 8-bit. More like 4..."
