MORTON SUBOTNICK • SIDEWINDER • PERFORMED LIVE FROM TOOL'S STUDIO (4K)

video upload by Peter Grenader

"MORTON SUBOTNICK'S SIDEWINDER:

Part 1 : in four movements (9 minutes 45 seconds)

Part 2: in three movements (6 minutes 45 seconds)

Performed live from Tool's studio Hollywood, CA by Jill Fraser, Shiro Fujioka, Peter Grenader, Thomas Klepper

Filming/Editing: K. David

Recording Engineer: Tim Dawson

Title Graphics: Hyejin Sunwoo

Produced, arranged and mixed by Peter Grenader

Morton Subotnick's seminal 1971 electronic work Sidewinder performed live at Tool's studio in Hollywood CA on March 26th, 2023 by Jill Fraser, Shiro Fujioka, Peter Grenader and Thomas Klepper, at the invitation of Joan LaBarbara, in celebration of his 90th birthday.

The idea of an adaptation of Sidewinder has been on the radar of zZyzx Society's Jill Fraser and Peter Grenader - both CalArts alumni who worked with Subotnick, for years. The process began with an abridged orchestration drafted by Peter Grenader, where the quartet was encouraged to both replicate his soundscapes and develop more interpretative timbres for the individual parts. With that, two general rules applied:

Prism Circuits Synthesizer. Serge Paperface Inspired. DIY Synth With Modifications.

video upload by Kim Abrams

"The effects section of my Allen and Heath Mixer actually sounds great. I wonder if it's the karaoke digital BBD MN300X series. It's doing most of the heavy lifting here. The higher pitched 'note' is the single fifth gate opening up a section of the BI-DI router which is connecting the Osc sync of one oscillator to another."

Serge Hybrid w/ Pelican Case

"I love these panels, they have been a complete joy for me to use. The paperface are from Skyler and prism circuits. He’s been incredible to deal with and a real stand up guy. One is the Canvas system inspired by buchla. The other is a custom CV based panel I ordered from him.

It all comes in a pelican 1610 case. I’m also going to include a Lowgain format changer, bananas, and the ripcords that I bought so can use the case anywhere. Let me know if you got any questions or want more pictures. Splitting up isn’t ideal for me, but I would certainly consider it Thank you for taking a look!"

Prism Circuits - Return of the QUASAR SYSTEM

video upload by

"The Return of the QUASAR SYSTEM!

The QUASAR system was inspired by the unpredictable nature of black holes and exploring the thoughts of getting lost in space by immersing yourself into a system that guides you in many unknown directions, forcing one to patch in ways they never thought possible.

With no sequencer in the system, users are forced to think outside the box to create melody and patterns. Having many random voltages within the system allows this instrument to be a force of its own when it comes to generative patching techniques and moving compositions that can morph in the time domain.

qua·sar

/ˈkwāˌzär/
a massive and extremely remote celestial object, emitting exceptionally large amounts of energy, and typically having a starlike image in a telescope. It has been suggested that quasars contain massive black holes and may represent a stage in the evolution of some galaxies.

PATCH NOTES -

I designed this patch to show that tonal sequences can be produced on the QUASAR SYSTEM to create an abstract composition. This piece has a very microtonal feel and is quite interesting when notes begin to relate and spread from each other.

The QUASAR SYSTEM lends itself to a world of generative patching techniques that has made this system a very unique system.

Preorders are now open for the QUASAR SYSTEM and scheduled to be released December 15th! Preorder link below ~
