62HP: Contextual FX Processor - Small Eurorack Effect System

video by Perfect Circuit

"Back again with our trusty Intellijel Palette case, this episode of 62hp journeys into the world of Eurorack effects processing in a system dubbed the Contextual Effects Processor. While the name is a bit of a play on the inclusion of the Harlequin’s Context from Shakmat, the modules chosen for this system were picked for their versatility and ability to fit into a wide range of musical situations.

For our effects, we turned to the Data Bender by Qu-Bit Electronix for glitchy, digital artifacts, the expansive Milky Way from Endorphines for general purpose effects like delays and reverbs, and the crushing Guillotine distortion from Ritual Electronics. We’ve also got a Bastl Cinnamon for filtering and additional drive, and the Katowice by XAOC Devices supplies crossover filtering and multi band isolation for situations where surgical sound shaping is needed. External sounds enter the system through a pair of Mutable Instruments Ears modules, but we can also take advantage of their built-in contact mics for generating and processing sounds fully within the system itself.

The Harlequin’s Context is a preset programmer for generating linked sets of control voltage sources. Each of the four channels can be set up as an LFO, envelope generator, and more, and the configurations of all four are stored together in scenes, which can be accessed manually with buttons on the front panel or sequenced and scanned through for ever-changing modulation in your patches. When paired with a traditional modulator like ALM’s Pip Slope, any system (especially one loaded up with all kinds of effects like this one) can come alive in compelling ways.

Ambient Modular: Contrast With Sequential Switching

Matt Lowery

"This is a complex patch, with a lot of disparate timbres fed into a sequential switch (The Qu-Bit Synapse). The audible source and its position in the stereo field is always changing.

What I know about contrast as a cinematographer seeps into my music as well: that contrast gives depth and significance. So, I like to wire up voices with large amounts of chill, and then switch to a gnarly wavetable. That’s what I like, you might like something different.

Sources here are Chord, Braids, guitar through Microcosm and Julianna, and a captured loop on the Tyme Sefari. Data Bender is mangling two taps of Chord.

Synapse is so great for this kind of thing, because you’re only ever hearing two of these voices. So it doesn’t overwhelm.

0-ctrl is stepping between different voicing on the Chord so that it’s always slightly different.

I let this run for a long time, purely for your listening pleasure. The footage just repeats after a while."

Qu-bit Data Bender Now Shipping

Qu - Bit

"Data Bender is a circuit bent digital audio buffer. It is inspired by the ways in which audio equipment can fail. The sounds of skipping CDs, software bugs, and defective tape machine playback are all accessible. The 96kHz, 24-bit audio buffer can hold over a minute of stereo audio, providing a sonic canvas capable of infinite surprises and discovery.

- Circuit bent digital audio buffer
- Skipping CDs, software bugs, old tape machine, scratched records
- 96kHz sampling rate, 24-bit depth for high fidelity audio with over a minute of stereo sampling time
- Stereo IO" You can find additional Qu-bit Data Bender posts here. Check with the dealers on the right for availability.

NAMM 2020: Qu-Bit Data Bender, Cascade, Surface & Aurora

Published on Jan 18, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"Qu-Bit debuted four new modules at NAMM 2020, including the remarkable Data Bender.

Qu-Bit presented the Aurora reverb, Surface physical modeling voice, and Cascade envelope generator—but of all their new offerings, we were most taken with the Data Bender. Andrew Ikenberry describes in detail the inner workings of this peculiar and outright destructive new Eurorack effect.

Designed to create several flavors of glitches and audio defects, the Data Bender is at its core an up to five minute digital audio buffer. Geared toward creating the sounds of failing recording technology (like neglected tapes, skipping CDs, and software glitches), the Data Bender turns "undesirable" sounds into entirely new types of musical effects.

NAMM 2020: Qu-bit Electronix Aurora, Data Bender, Surface and Cascade

Published on Jan 15, 2020 sonicstate

"At the NAMM show this year Qu-bit Electronix have introduced 4 new eurorack modules; Aurora, Data Bender, Surface and Cascade. Andrew Ikenberry was on hand with a patch to show off everything in slick fasion.

Data Bender is a circuit bent digital audio buffer, designed to give you all the control over Skipping CDs, software bugs, old tape machine, scratched records and more.

Aurora is a spectral reverb with true stereo IO, giving you access to lush reverbs and a phase vocoding algorithm for spectral transformations of the incoming sound.

Surface is a multi-timbral physical modeling voice with different voicing algorithms to produce plucked strings and marimbas, all the way to FM drums.

Finally Cascade is a ratcheting envelope generator featuring burst generation, a flexible curve parameter, and two discrete level controls"
