"By request a little video about connecting the RK-006 to the RK-008 via USBSerial. This can expand the RK008 with a complete extra MIDI-I/O bus, adding up to 4 MIDI Inputs and 12 MIDI Outputs (+ the extra USB you can plug into the USB-hub)

(Of course it will also work to just connect the RK-006 to the RK-008 via a TRS stereo audio cable but then the inputs of the RK-006 will not be merged with the ones on the RK-008.)"

"One track on the RK008 can contain MIDI messages for any of the 16 MIDI channels - and what if you want to make a recording more editable afterwards: Meet the expand function.

When you do a track expand, the RK008 analyzes the MIDI data and determines if it is a drum track you want to expand or if it's MIDI data with multiple instruments. It works pretty neat!"

"We already had the 'Split Brain Preset' on the RK006, but with the latest RK006 firmware there is also an option to add a MIDI FX chain into it. We use it to integrate it with our RK008 but it's also a perfect opportunity for the RK002 to do some magic.

Amongst the multitude of RK002 DUY firmwares here's one which turns the Korg Nanokontrol into a 8-step sequencer. Combined with the RK006 different port modes you can make a nice hybrid setup between MIDI and CV/Gate.

Here we mix&match the TR-606, Neutron and eventually the TR8s and Digitakt."

"Although fiddling around with this sequencer #DUY​ on the RK002 / RK006 is simple and playful, under the hood it’s an intricate setup;

The RK006 is the master clock and hosts the nanokontrol in ‘split-brain-mode’ (which means the RK006 is divided in a left and right part) the incoming MIDI messages from the nanokontrol and the tempo are picked up by the RK002 and looped back into the other half; now the RK006 can send back the rk002 led commands for displaying the sequence on the nanokontrol and also the note sequence to the #d05​

We don’t call it split-brain for nothin’! 🤯😃"

Tracks + Volca FM + Bass bleeps and bloops

"Making some arpeggiated noise, which my brain likes for some reason.

Audio routed into the Tracks in a bit unusual way.
Volca FM has a built-in stereo chorus effect. So as not to lose it, I routed the audio like this:
Volca FM and Bass are connected to the Retrokits RK003 passive mixer (using 3.5mm stereo jacks). Mixed signal from the RK003 goes to the Circuit Tracks Ch1 and Ch2, which are hard panned left and right on the internal mixer.

"In this live improvised jam, I introduce the Wavestate to some old and new friends - MicroFreak, Monologue, Volca Drum, Novation Circuit, 3 Zoom MS-70CDRs and Korg NTS-1. The only prerecorded sequence is the drums on Volca Drum. The rest of the jam is live playing and active use of the arpeggiators on the Wavestate and MicroFreak. The recorded video is annotated with some notes about the performance.

During the jam, I let each synth/layer have a solo part where it is up front and center - the MicroFreak, the Monologue and the two arp parts and the pad part on the Wavestate. I try to think of them as different members of a band.

The Wavestate patch/performance is a slightly modified version of "WF Charlottenburg" and is a part of the "Berlin School and Ambient Construction Kit" available here: https://gumroad.com/waveformer​.

It has four layers - 2 arpeggiators, one arpeggiated bass and one pad. I added some inharmonic wavesamples to steps 9-16 of the pad sample wavesequence, moved around a few notes and rests on the timing lanes for the two arps, added some octave shifts to the pitch sequences, and some ratcheting to one of the arps.

During the jam, I play around with the wavesequence lanes for all the four layers - timing lane to change rhythm, sample lane to vary the wavesamples, pitch lane to add some octave changes to some notes, shape to add ratcheting, and gate to add some variation to note length. The wavesequence loop lengths are different from lane to lane, creating interesting polymeter effects. I also modify pan, filter cutoff, envelope decay and reverb mix through the jam.
