INFREQUENCY

"Richard Lainhart among the sound artists who create new compositions based on the earliest known recording of the human voice.

The original recording was made by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville on April 9, 1860 using his own invention, the phonautograph, and consists of a series of scratches on a roll of blackened paper. Scott had never developed a way to play back his recordings and they went unheard for 148 years. In 2008, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory converted the thin lines back into audio, allowing us to hear a woman singing a segment of the folk song “Au Clair de la Lune”.

INFREQUENCY made an open call was made for artists to submit their own interpretations of the 1860 recording by Édouard-Léon Scott. This project is a conceptual extension of breathing life back into this document through modern technology; deciphering a voice that was etched into a thin layer of oil lamp smoke, and featuring a diverse group of international contemporary composers, creating new works from this ten second piece of history.

Richard Lainhart's contribution, "La Lune dans la Lumière de Jour" (The Moon in the Light of Day) uses only the original recording as its sound source, to which he applies extreme time-stretching and spectral transformations to create a haunting new work of mysterious metallic timbres.

This free, digital-only release from INFREQUENCY collects together nine exceptional submissions as high quality MP3s.

Richard Lainhart - Tranzducer

Seth wrote in to let me know he made it to the Tranzducer show featuring Richard Lainhart. The following are his notes and a couple of shots of the show. Thanks Seth!

"Here's a couple of photos from the Richard Lainhart show at Tranzducer last Friday.

It was a really good show. Rui Pereria did an incredible piece with looping video and audio that was both intellectually and musically interesting. Short video loops with audio snippets that went with them, mutating and overlapping and constantly changing but at the same time all related somehow. Moldover did a genius piece combining recognizable song segments in Ableton Live, custom-made MIDI controllers and an fabulous sense of humor all mixed together to create a captivating and fun performance that was also quite powerful. I didn't know what he did before I saw the show, but if somebody told me "laptop performer" beforehand I would have been maybe mildly interested. However, after seeing his custom-modded Novation controller, his creativity and his energy, I can only say it was totally rock 'n' roll!

And then came Lainhart. I don't even know where to begin. He started slow and low with long slowly changing drones and they just built and built and built until the room was completely taken over by this enormous wall of sound that was moving and changing with sound and textures and rhythms all over the place. It was amazing.

It was also nothing like any of the other things I've seen him do either live with Jordan Rudess at Moogfest or on video. With Rudess he's providing textures, backgrounds, support, an anchor, and then there's Rudess doing his virtuoso thing. And YouTube videos just can't convey the power and intensity of what an actual live performance feels like.

Plus, at the end, Lainhart and Moldover did a totally improvised and unplanned piece together.
I honestly didn't think an Ableton rhythmic loop-meister and a Buchla sound sculptor would have very much in common to play together, but it was actually a perfect combination of rhythm and texture and it totally worked.

Anyway, about the photos, I really like the blue one as a photograph, but maybe the purple one is more representative of the show. I just thought I'd pass them on and put in my 2¢ on the show."

Periphery Label Launch Event, August 20th, Philadelphia

"One Thousand Pulses, the Northeast's premier concert series for electronic & experimental music, invites you to the launch event for its new CD label, Periphery. / otperiphery.com

Periphery's maxim is "wrestling frequencies from the edges & otherwise", proffering uncategorizable works from musicians operating across the electronic & experimental music spectrum.

All three recent releases, including Richard Lainhart's Polychromatic Integers, and the One Thousand Pulses compendium Home Patterning (with tracks by Tim Motzer and Color is Luxury, recorded live in the OTP soundspace) will be available at the event.

Our launch event lineup:

> TIM MOTZER / 1krecordings.com / Philly-based guitarist and composer Tim Motzer finds infinite joy in diversity. His output as a leader and sideman crisscrosses multiple musical universes, including jazz, fusion, prog, hip-hop, soul, electronica, and the avantgarde. Motzer gets to explore these genres and the intersections between them via his ubiquitous presence in the wildly deep and varied Philly scene. He also traverses manifold territories through the many albums released on his own 1k Recordings, such as the rhythmically diverse soundscapes populating the Tilomo release, and, more tellingly, as Fractured Reverb Underground (FRU). The sole FRU CD comprises electronic studio experiments from 1999 — a decade ahead of their time — generously tipping its hat to the Orb’s Alex Patterson thanks to its psychedelic clouds of mercurial ambient textures. Motzer has also worked on releases by British singer-songwriter David Sylvian with the ongoing Secret Rhythms project comprising electronica/dub luminary Burnt Friedman and ex-Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, as well as with German Touch guitarist Markus Reuter on Descending, a deeply sublime and stunningly beautiful work that references Brian Eno, Frippertronics, Supersilent, and David Sylvian.

> RICHARD LAINHART / otownmedia.com / Since childhood, Richard Lainhart has been interested in natural processes such as waves, flames and clouds, in harmonics and harmony, and in creative interactions with machines, using them as compositional methods to present sounds and images that are as beautiful as he can make them. Well-versed in the varied applications of his beloved Buchla boxes, yet equally agile on numerous synths, keyboards, vibes, and guitars, Lainhart has been reorganizing the topography of tone and texture for over 30 years. After studying composition in Albany under EMF founder and professor Joel Chadabe, Lainhart not only went on to create idiosyncratic recordings in his own right, but has performed and worked with the likes of John Cage, David Tudor, Steve Reich, Phill Niblock, David Berhman, and many others.

> COLOR IS LUXURY / colorisluxury.org / Obsessed with circuit-bending and inner ear manipulation, intrepid Philly experimental sound duo Color Is Luxury combines the talents of erstwhile Buchla veteran Charles Cohen and the curiously monikered hair_loss in the yielding of some of the most provocative boops and beeps around. Ripping the innards out of their respective electronic arsenals, this diminutive motley crew twist their varied sound palettes into corkscrew whorls of new shapes, sizes, and hues. Noise but not noise, drawing clear lineage from the pioneering work of Morton Subotnick, Pauline Oliveros, Gil Melle, and Wendy Carlos outward, Color Is Luxury remain tonally consciously even when they go all atonal on us, sonic provocateurs sharing a rich aural history that blossoms before your very ears.

> PTO / PTO (Pulses Tones Oscillations) is one of the numerous sound-producing aliases of Darren Bergstein, longtime music journalist, collector, historian, and archivist, former publisher of the magazines i/e and e/i, and founder/owner of both One Thousand Pulses and the Periphery label. Free improvising in the wellworn electroacoustic tradition, Bergstein has at his disposal tools old (tongue drum, rainstick, metallophone) and new (iPhone), but they're all just texture-mappers regardless of origin, simply various objects to be tapped, stroked, and struck at will.

Join us for an immersive evening of audiovisual electronic interfacing."

Richard Lainhart Releases A New Album on Ex Ovo

February 26, 2008 — Richard Lainhart, award-winning composer, performer, and filmmaker, is pleased to announce that Ex Ovo, founded in January 2006 for the love of dulcet drone music, has issued a release of his CD White Night. The disc is also available in the States from CDeMUSIC .

An excerpt from White Night can be found at www.aalfang.de.

________________________________________
Ex Ovo writes: Back in 1974, one year before Brian Eno's first landmark in ambient music, a young musician from New York wrote down a fragment of beauty's hidden story with the minimal vocabulary of sine waves on the young black skin of a Moog synthesizer. The first release on CD features Richard Lainhart's masterpiece in its original 29-minutes-version. There's no single second to add, after this time everything is told though nothing has been said.

________________________________________
Richard talks about the work's origin:
" "White Night" was composed and recorded in the late fall of 1974 at the State University of New York at Albany in the Coordinated Electronic Music Studio (CEMS). CEMS was created by my composition teacher Joel Chadabe with design and custom fabrication by Robert Moog and was, at the time, the largest integrated Moog modular synthesizer studio in the world.

"The piece consists of a dense, continuous four-note chord, each note in the chord recorded in a separate pass to one track on a Scully 4-track studio recorder. Each track consists of a single sine wave oscillator which is frequency modulated by a group of eight additional sine wave oscillators. Those oscillators are all tuned to different tones, each harmonically related to the fundamental chord tone. The amplitude of each harmonic oscillator is continuously varied under the control of an individual sequencer, and each sequencer is free-running - that is, the sequencers are not synchronized to each other, but rather running in their own independent timebases. The result is a continuously-changing complex harmonic waveform which modulates the frequency of the chord tone oscillator, generating a continuously-changing complex timbre based on the fundamental pitch of the note.

"The center tone of "White Night" is 212 Hz, slightly higher than the G below Middle C. The other notes create a chord consisting of a perfect fifth below the center tone, a major seventh just below the center tone, and a major second above the center tone. "White Night" was composed without reference to the standard A-440 tuning system, as we had no such pitch reference in the studio; I just picked a center tone that felt right, and went from there. As such, "White Night" lives in its own pitch world.

"The title "White Night" came about so: it was late December in upstate New York when I was finishing the piece, and a blizzard passed through town the night of the final mix. As I sat in the glow of the sequencers and tape decks in the University studio listening to the final version, I looked out the window and saw a security light on a building opposite the studio illuminating the blowing snow as it drifted off the roof. All I could see was the snow swirling in the light against the blackness; a moving painting continually drawn, erased, and redrawn, always changing, but always the same. It may sound bleak, but it wasn't - it was beautiful. It seemed to me that the image of the dancing whiteness perfectly matched the sound of the piece, and so I called it "White Night" to commemorate that evening of wind and snow."

Ex Ovo shows that ambient music is alive and well. I applaud their good work spreading the word -- and the music -- worldwide. — Richard

Richard Lainhart Memorial Tribute - Mar 4 at Roulette

"A program of music and remembrances honoring musician, composer and filmmaker Richard Lainhart (Feb 14, 1953–Dec 30, 2011). The program will be followed by a 30 minute screening/performance of Richard's last film work 'History of the Future' with a live improvised soundtrack by the 'Orchestra of the Future.'

The film, 'History of the Future' is sourced entirely from technical, medical, and instructional animations from the 30s through the 70s, all of it public-domain content from the Prelinger Archives. There are no cartoons as such, and nothing comedic, although neither is there anything graphic or otherwise objectionable - much of it is fairly mysterious, in fact. The film is entirely silent, and so all the soundtrack audio will come from the players.

Please RSVP to Caroline Meyers, cmeyers at otownmedia.com. Thank you."

VEMIA Auction Update - Joel Chadabe Late 60s CEMS System Goes Up

The official auction start date is Nov 3 and runs until Nov 11, however you can see some items listed here. From the description it looks like you can start bidding now.

The rarest item to be auctioned? Joel Chadabe's late 60s CEMS system (pictured - click the image for the full size shot). The CEMS system was located at the Electronic Music Studio at State University of New York at Albany. You can see and read more about Joel Chadabe and the system at his official website. Joel also wrote Electric Sound which recently came up for auction here. Side Note from the comments of this previous post: Richard Lainhart of O-Town Media learned to play electronic music on the CEMS system pictured here.

Peter Forrest who runs the auction let me know that the auction will include Felix' Visser's own Syntons. Felix is the man behind Synton, pictured here . His items start at number 5500 and go to 5539.

Update via Richard Lainhart in the comments:
"Some notes about this system: the large knobless module at the end of each sequencer is a Linear Mixer that Bob custom-designed for this system. These were very clean simple mixers that could mix from DC up into the audo range. They were intended mainly to mix the CV outputs from the sequencer stages together, but since they were so clean, we would often use them to mix the oscillator and filter outputs as well.

The jackfields at the bottom of each cabinet are patchbays that connect the cabinets together. In its original configuration, there were bundles of cable behind each cabinet that connected the patchbays to each other, so you could cable between the cabinets without needing extra-long patchcords.

The cabinet with the large white panel contains all the components of the Master Analog Clock, another custom design. The four vertical slots in the third row down from the top are Nixie lamps; these would display the current time count (in 10th of a second, I think). The top row are 8 individual clock subdividers, which could be set to send out divisions or multiples of the basic clock pulse. Below all that are the 8 clock outputs, any of which could be routed to any of the sequencers. The purpose of all this was to provide a master timing source for the sequencers, so they could all be synced with complex rhythmic relationships. The sequencers could also free-run, so you could have any combination of master-synced and free-running.

The remaining cabinet contains most of the actual audio-generating modules, although as I recall there were a couple of additonal filters and oscillators in some of the control cabinets as well.

At the time, it was the largest integrated Moog system in the world, and probably the largest integrated Moog sequencer system ever."

Update via Richard Lainhart:
"By the way, all the pieces on the second half of this page. from "The Wave-Sounding Sea" to "A River On Cold Mountain" were created with the CEMS system. "

Remembering Bob Moog

[ Note: This post stays on top for the day. Tons going up below. Originally posted at 8:36 AM PST. ]

Today marks the fourth year of Bob Moog's passing. Play a little something for him today.

Be sure to visit The Bob Moog Foundation, and Moog Music where you'll find this wallpaper free of charge.

Don't forget, the "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog Museum Exhibit" runs from August 29 - April 30. Keith Emerson and others will be there opening weekend.

Thank you for everything Bob. The synths, the inspiration, the humor, positive vibes and the magic.

Update: Mark Pulver's Moog tattoo. Mark was good friends with Bob Moog. I remember him getting this tattoo after his passing.

BTW, if you have anything Moog specific you'd like to send in, feel free. You can reach me at matrixsynth at gmail. Of course feel free to comment.

Also, I don't ask for a dime to run this site. I've had people suggest I put up a Paypal Donate Here button. I don't because I do have ads on the site and I believe in offering the site for free. But if you do want to donate, even just a few bucks, donate something to The Bob Moog Foundation. Little donations can add up. They are keeping not only Bob Moog's memory alive, but the magic and history of synths.

Update via The Bob Moog Foundation:
"August 21, 2009 -- A Moog Day of Rememberance and Celebration
When August 21st comes around each year, we pause to remember Bob and the remarkable legacy that he left for us all to enjoy. His impact is so widespread that people remember him in all kinds of ways that are meaningful to their particular connection with him. Take a moment today to pay tribute to Bob by:

* Connecting with Bob through your instrument. Lay down a killer lead on your synth or play an ethereal melody on your theremin.

* Listening to some of your favorite Moog tunes. Bob loved working with musicians and fed off their creative drive. He was often astonished at what they could do with his instruments.

* Going out and hear some live music tonight. Bob believed deeply in live music as a force that brings people together in community.

* Reading about Bob's life, work, and legacy. Visit the CaringBridge site and read Ileana Grams-Moog's reflection on today's significance.

* Supporting the Bob Moog Foundation. We carry Bob's legacy forward by inspiring and educating people through electronic music. Donate here so that we can continue our important work.

Today we also celebrate the Bob Moog Foundation's third anniversary of making waves. Next week we head to the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, CA for the opening of the first exhibit featuring Bob's archives. The exhibit, Waves of Inspiration. The Legacy of Moog, pays tribute to Bob's impact and celebrates his legacy, just as we are doing at the foundation today.

Update to November 8th City Skies 08 event

via Jim on AH:

"Due to a fall and broken bones, Richard Lainhart has had to postpone his City Skies appearance until next year (we'll update you when we finalize the scheduling). We're disappointed we'll have to wait to hear from this incredible performer, but are happy to know Richard is at home and is on the mend. We wish him a quick recovery and look forward to seeing him next Spring.

In his place, several incredible performers have agreed to step in at the last minute and help keep the analog vibe we had planned on Saturday, November 8th at Kavarna in Decatur, GA:

IDM masters Richard Devine and Josh Kay will be performing live together with their huge Custom Doepfer analog modular systems, along with the Yamaha Tenori-On and Jazzmutant Lemur digital controllers. Richard was a highlight of the May City Skies Festival, and he promises to amaze us again.

To keep a Buchla 200e synth on stage this week, Don Hassler will be joining us for a set of wild and wonderful analog madness, also bringing his EMS Synthi and Serge modular synths.

And, as previously planned, Wendy Owens of Collaboration with Sounds from South Carolina will be sharing her wonderful sound-making, and Jim Combs and Klimchak, collectively known as Bribing The Buddha, will open the show with their down-tempo, ambient, 12-fold audio path. Klimchak will be using his Buchla Marimba Lumina.

We advise you to get your tickets prior to the event as Richard Devine and Josh Kay will most certainly draw a big crowd.

More info can be found at http://www.cityskies.com

-Jim"

Richard Lainhart's work has appeared numerous times here on MATRIXSYNTH. Our thoughts are with you Richard, we hope you get better real soon.

Richard Lainhart’s Buchla For Sale

Via Todd Barton:

"Caroline Meyers, wife of the late Richard Lainhart has asked me to help her find a buyer for Richard’s Buchla. She is interested especially in anyone desiring to continue Richard’s legacy by exploring his massive patch.

I know that Richard had a patch on his 18-module system that he explored and performed on for almost 3 years. The current 12-module system (see photos) was his 'traveling system' which was paired down from his original 18-module setup.

The modules were all purchased in 2009 and are 2.x firmware, however, Caroline is happy to upgrade it to 3.x firmware before shipping to a buyer.

The modules are:

207e Mixer/Mic Preamp/Envelope Detector
210e Control and Signal Router
225e MIDI Decoder/Preset Manager
261e x 4 Complex Waveform Generator
266e Source of Uncertainty
281e Quad Function Generator
291e x 2 Triple Morphing Filter
292e Quad Dynamics Manager
Cabinet and Buchla Power supply

All modules are in pristine cosmetic and functioning condition and includes the cables pictured. Caroline is asking $15,300. A similar new setup would cost $16,640 (without the cables). It would come with detailed instructions for replicating Richard’s patch."

Create Digital Music, ETSY & MAKE - Handmade music night 9/27 8pm! NYC

It looks like our buddies, Peter Kirn of CDM and Richard Lainhart will be at Handmade Music at Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Richard will be playing a solo set with his Buchla and Continuum on Thursday, September 27 at 8PM. The cool part? It will be free! Just RSVP. If you are in the area, don't miss this! Check out the videos on Richard's site for a sample. Also see these previous posts for some of Richard's contributions to this site.

"Handmade Music is an evening of original creations for music making, open to the creative minds of the New York area. It's equal parts party, show-and-tell, performance, and science fair, open to whatever oddball software and hardware people want to bring, complete or not. Some come with projects, others just to hear and see unusual new instruments, from software to game systems to homemade electronic instruments.

Each installment brings plenty of surprises, but appearances confirmed
for this one include:

* A featured performance by Richard Lainhart, a renowned electronic improviser and innovator
* Seven-foot tall "Suburbanite" aka "60 Switches of Fury", a music controller by Eric Johnson
* The Monome, a minimalist open-source hardware controller with grids of buttons
* A fluid musical instrument controller entirely by webcam, by Peter Kirn
* Lots of other things that may just appear"

Lainhart Live @ electro-music 2010

via Richard Lainhart
"Friends: the direct recording of my solo set at electro-music 2010 is now available on SoundCloud as a downloadable high-quality MP3.

This track is completely improvised in realtime without backing tracks or edits, and is for Buchla 200e controlled by a Haken Continuum multi-dimensional keyboard. All the sounds heard here are from the Buchla, with the exception of the flute-like sound at the end, which is one of the Continuum's physical modeling instruments called Slide Wind. The ghost echo behind the Slide Wind sound is from the 200e.

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy it."
