Lainhart will be accompanying his cycle of four new abstract films, whose imagery is inspired by the organic processes of nature, with his Buchla 200e/Haken Continuum modular analog synthesizer system.

Richard Lainhart Memorial Tribute - Mar 4 on UStream

As most of you that come to the site know, Richard Lainhart passed away on December 30, 2011. He was often featured here on MATRIXSYNTH and was extremely respected in the synth community. His wife Caroline Meyers wrote in to let me know his memorial will be streamed on March 4th on Ustream here. I'll put another post up on March 4th, but do mark the date. "The event will include music, video, remembrances and a performance of one of Richard's last compositions -- a live improvisation by a dozen musicians while watching Richard's film 'History of the Future.'" Below is a photostream that will be up prior to the event. I opted to grab the screen shot above for the archives.

Jan Hammer, Jordan Rudess & Tony Williams - Miami Vice Theme

YouTube via sysx. sent my way via khoral.
Jan Hammer and the Lync LN-4 Richard Lainhart mentions in this post on the lower cost LN-1000. See the Lync label below for more.

BTW, anyone have any decent images of the LN-4? I did a quick image search on Google and didn't find much. This image is from Vintage Synth.

Update via Richard Lainhart in the comments: "Note that Jan is actually playing a custom version of the LN-4 JH Signature model, which was a variation on the standard LN-4. The JH had, among other modifications, mod and pitch wheels in different positions than the standard LN-4 to accommodate his particular vibrato technique.

What makes this particular JH unique is that it had a wireless MIDI transmitter, making it one of the only wireless MIDI devices in the world then - a big deal in the late 80s. Note that there's no cable coming from his JH.

I still have my LN-4, although it's no longer working; I'll see if I can get some decent pictures of it for you."

Thanks Richard! I'll update this post and put a new one up when I get them.

Oraison

YouTube via rlainhart
"Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009.

From the time I first touched the Haken Continuum, I'd wanted to use it to play a composition by Olivier Messiaen called "Oraison". I first heard "Oraison" years ago as a student of electronic music, and had fallen in love with its simple, beautiful harmonies and profound sense of mystery.

"Oraison" is not only a lovely piece of music, but has historical interest too - it may be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance. Also of note is that Messiaen re-arranged "Oraison" for cello and piano and used it for the fifth movement of "Quartet for the End of Time", which he composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941; the "Quartet" is one of the great classics of 20th-century music.

"Oraison" ("prayer") is from a suite of pieces for six Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belles Eaux" ("Celebration of the Beautiful Waters"), composed for the Paris International Exposition in 1937. The Ondes Martenot was among the first electronic instruments, and is still among the most expressive. The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you."

Richard Lainhart's Rig_moogfest 2007

Description for this shot:
The words of Richard Lainhart:
'As my notes on the Early Works page indicate, my first real compositions were created on the Moog Modular synthesizer, and I've had a sympathy for analog systems and techniques ever since. But once personal computers, MIDI, and digital audio processing became viable tools for composing and performing electronic music, I moved away from modular analog synthesizers, which weren't affordable for the average musician and were never really intended for live performance anyway.

However, one consequence of my recent collaborations with Jordan Rudess, particularly in our live electronic performances in which Jordan plays his MiniMoogs, is that I've come to miss the immediacy and organic sound of analog modular synthesizers. As a result, I decided to order a Buchla 200e Electric Music Box, which I received in June of 2007. I chose the 200e not only because of its compact size and functional density, but also because it's the only patchable modular synthesizer with preset memory, making it ideal for live performance.'"
