Battling Seizure Robots

Battling Seizure Robots from Richard Lainhart on Vimeo.

"The HD version of a jam with Moldover at Tranzducer .011 in Brooklyn, NY, on November 30, 2007. I play my Buchla 200e/Haken Continuum system, while Moldover works out on his controllerism rig. This is a completely spontaneous, unrehearsed, undiscussed improvisation, and the first time we've ever played together; while it's camera-audio only and so not the best quality, I think it's worth checking out. The complementary video improvisation was provided by Bert Baldwin.

("Battling Seizure Robots" is the name of one of the video animations I created for this performance, which, perhaps fortunately, you don't see in this clip.)"
See the Moldover label below for more posts on his Mojo.

Oraison

Oraison from Richard Lainhart on Vimeo.

"From the time I first touched the Haken Continuum, I'd wanted to use it to play a composition by Olivier Messiaen called "Oraison". I first heard "Oraison" years ago as a student of electronic music, and had fallen in love with its simple, beautiful harmonies and profound sense of mystery.

"Oraison" is not only a lovely piece of music, but has historical interest too - it may be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance. Also of note is that Messiaen re-arranged "Oraison" for cello and piano and used it for the fifth movement of "Quartet for the End of Time", which he composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941; the "Quartet" is one of the great classics of 20th-century music.

"Oraison" ("prayer") is from a suite of pieces for six Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belles Eaux" ("Celebration of the Beautiful Waters"), composed for the Paris International Exposition in 1937. The Ondes Martenot was among the first electronic instruments, and is still among the most expressive. The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you.

Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009."

Lainhart Live @ electro-music 2010

via Richard Lainhart
"Friends: the direct recording of my solo set at electro-music 2010 is now available on SoundCloud as a downloadable high-quality MP3.

This track is completely improvised in realtime without backing tracks or edits, and is for Buchla 200e controlled by a Haken Continuum multi-dimensional keyboard. All the sounds heard here are from the Buchla, with the exception of the flute-like sound at the end, which is one of the Continuum's physical modeling instruments called Slide Wind. The ghost echo behind the Slide Wind sound is from the 200e.

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy it."

Pantomation (1977-1979)

YouTube via VintageCG | March 02, 2010

"Pantomation was a very early tracking chromakey system from the 1970s. Originally intended for music scoring, the system was adapted to other styles of performance art. While crude by modern standards, the concept was decades ahead of its time; it can reasonably be considered an early forebear of systems like Microsoft's Project Natal."

via Retro Thing, via Jimmersound

Update via Richard Lainhart in the comments:
"Coincidently enough, I was involved in this project - I hard-wired most of the computer interface for the Pantomation system, later called the Electric Pantograph. There's a history of the project here, some of which is used in the narration of the film"

http://www.experimentaltvcenter.org/history/groups/gtext.php3?id=32

I was working as a musician/technician with EBA then, and knew Tom Dewitt, the main designer of the system, from the SUNY Albany Electronic Music Studio, where I studied with Joel Chadabe. You can see a brief shot of the mighty Moog CEMS system in that studio at about 3:35 in the video."

Richard "Jeff Beck" Lainhart

YouTube via JCRUDESS — May 23, 2010 — "Richard plays a nice melody on Continuum over sone JR chords!"
You should recognize Richard Lainhart from the numerous posts here.

For those in Western Europe, Richard will be performing at the Avantgarde Festival running July 2-4:
".. not just music... our aim is to create a place… and an atmosphere where…like musicians who meet on stage to jam... well , other artists like… painters, poets, shortfilm-makers… visuals... find a space to "jam", to collaborate... on a screen , on a canvass…

… a retreat ... "chill area"... is very important ... intensive listening and viewing can be very exhausting....

…oh yes… last year we came across the element "Fire"… in a performance by Spanish and French artists ... this year we want to develop this idea a bit more… we have invited a french lady welder artist… "jam" with local craftsmen ? … "fireworks" ? not quite ... rather "works with fire " ...
and …well, the spoken word - the often forgotten spoken word ... a poet from Pakistan will be our guest this year and we hope that there will be an encounter of word artists... a sort of catalysation might happen ... or rather multiplication... yes, indeed… multiplication ..."
