Waterphone: Waters/Hubbert from todd barton on Vimeo.

via MATRIXSYNTH Member, Todd Barton:

"I’m really, really excited by this new official Richard Waters’ waterphone made by Brooks Hubbert. Brooks is an amazing musician and instrument builder who knew and worked with Richard. This new bass waterphone is so very resonant, responsive and expressive! It is a dream to play. For a longer audio demonstration go to:

Waterphone-Easel Texture i

via MATRIXSYNTH Member, Todd Barton: "I'm really stoked about the new Richard Water's waterphones being loving made by Brooks Hubbert! He has totally channeled Richard's energy, spirit and further evolved the waterphone. I will make a proper demo of just the waterphone soon, but today I played live over a looped sonic bed of Buchla Music Easel analog synth textures."

Todd Barton Spatial Frontiers I - in memoriam richard waters

"Here is the set of Buchla Music Easel duet improvisations. The first piece in the performance was a for solo waterphone and can be found here: [in memoriam richard waters SoundCloud & Video below]

Todd Barton and Bruce Bayard performing as the duet, Control Voltage Therapy, begin another concert series at the Schneider Museum of Art. The series continues their exploration of space as a compositional tool, this time, expanding the quadraphonic sound into all four galleries of the Museum. Besides the Buchla Easel: Electric Music Box, Barton and Bayard will be exploring other acoustic instruments beginning this Friday with the waterphone."

"On July 4, 2013 we lost Richard Waters, inventor of the Waterphone. Here is my humble tribute to a wonderful person, friend, musician and instrument builder.

For more information: waterphone.com

In this performance the waterphone is being looped then processed through a Buchla Music Easel another amazing instrument by genius invetor/designer, Don Buchla. buchla.com"

Dumb Songs Two Player Musical Hardware

Dumb Songs Jam from Joseph Moore on Vimeo.

"A Jam I did with Brendan Byrne to show off the capabilities of the Dumb Songs cabinet. Dumb Songs was my thesis project at Parsons MFADT program. It's an arcade cabinet that outputs MIDI notes and codes to be interpreted in Ableton Live."

Some additional info in via Joseph:

"Dumb Songs is a two player musical toy that uses physical arcade controllers to send MIDI notes and control signals to Ableton Live, creating a musical environment for two people. The look is inspired as much by Dr. Seuss, Pee-Wee's Playhouse and The Phantom Tollbooth, as my intent to use a messy, dilapidated, asymmetrical aesthetic to further convince potential players that it's supposed to be touched and played. (If it looks imperfect, people won't hesitate.)

The collaborative nature of the work is evident in the sound sculpting as well. The layout, design of controls, and configuration of software were all considered, not only for their own pure aesthetic qualities, but also in furtherance of fun and collaboration. Dumb Songs gives you a chance to be silly and make fun sounds with whoever happens to be around."

Studio Wormbone 'Metal In Water' - Waterphone Sample Set

"'Metal In Water' explores the artistic properties of forged industrial materials from an entirely new perspective. Combine the harmonic overtones of steel, aluminum, bronze and iron with the highly emotive way that water influences resonance, in a pristine collection of 24-bit samples."

OBP TV Interview with Composer Todd Barton

via OBP

"He’s the man behind much of the music at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. And he says, it’s OK if you don’t even notice the music. Todd Barton’s goal is to affect the mood without being obvious."

Some synth spotting in an interview with Todd Barton aka vgermuse. You should recognize the name from numerous posts. Metasynth, the Waterphone, and a pocket theremenin get a mention along with various other instruments.

Todd is currently working on the premiere of an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood in NYC by Ping Chong.

"A track from my 1983 score for the stage production of Dracula. Scored for two sting quartets (the KRONOS Quartet), JP-8 synthesizer, Roland MC-202, Wulitzer electric piano, waterphone and grand pianos.
This is an excerpt from a 12 minute piece.
For the synthgeeks, the multiple MC-202 sequences were tape-synced and all JP-8 tracks were individually performed onto an old Tascam 1/2" eight-track tape deck."

See the Halloween label below for more. BTW, if you have anything you want to send in for the holidays, send it to matrixsynth at gmail.com. The general rule for posts is they have to demo specific synths you can identify, but for holiday posts I'll typically make the exception as long as they are remotely synth related.

V-Synth & Waterphone and a Halloween Soundpack

via Studio Wormone
"'Atmospherix: Ominous Environments' from Studio Wormbone effectively transports listeners to anxious underworlds. These disturbing dystopias are ready to inject your next production with gloom and doom. They are ambient inhospitable places, where dread lurks just beneath the surface. These soundscapes are intended as backdrops to invoke moody settings for Halloween, downtempo chill, minimal techno, or a scene from the next video game blockbuster. They contribute subtlety and detail to any number of musical and post production applications, particularly film cues that demand forboding vibes."

Note: "there's no waterphone used in this collection (though keep an eye out for my future releases!) but I thought it and the V-Synth were a recognizable visual representation of what this collection sounds like, since it's mostly digitally processed dark ethereal backdrops."
