Pneuma

Pneuma from Richard Lainhart on Vimeo.
via Richard Lainhart.
"Pneuma" is based on growth patterns generated by celluar automata software, processed in Adobe After Effects to create constantly changing structures ranging from crystalline to architectural. The soundtrack is a live improvisation on the Buchla 200e analog modular synthesizer, controlled by the Haken Audio Continuum Fingerboard fretless keyboard. This HD version was rendered in May, 2008.

Warning: "Pneuma" displays an intense, periodic flicker pattern that some may find uncomfortable. Those subject to seizures should not view this film.

Richard "Jeff Beck" Lainhart

YouTube via JCRUDESS — May 23, 2010 — "Richard plays a nice melody on Continuum over sone JR chords!"
You should recognize Richard Lainhart from the numerous posts here.

For those in Western Europe, Richard will be performing at the Avantgarde Festival running July 2-4:
".. not just music... our aim is to create a place… and an atmosphere where…like musicians who meet on stage to jam... well , other artists like… painters, poets, shortfilm-makers… visuals... find a space to "jam", to collaborate... on a screen , on a canvass…

… a retreat ... "chill area"... is very important ... intensive listening and viewing can be very exhausting....

…oh yes… last year we came across the element "Fire"… in a performance by Spanish and French artists ... this year we want to develop this idea a bit more… we have invited a french lady welder artist… "jam" with local craftsmen ? … "fireworks" ? not quite ... rather "works with fire " ...
and …well, the spoken word - the often forgotten spoken word ... a poet from Pakistan will be our guest this year and we hope that there will be an encounter of word artists... a sort of catalysation might happen ... or rather multiplication... yes, indeed… multiplication ..."

"The series above are from my January 23 evening performance [mentioned here], and show the new performance configuration. The actual performance shots are a little blurry because it was so dark, but you get the idea. This same page has links to photos from my workshop and interview, with a couple of decent shots of the system.

These two system closeups from the performance hall before the show, though:

Oraison

Oraison from Richard Lainhart on Vimeo.

"From the time I first touched the Haken Continuum, I'd wanted to use it to play a composition by Olivier Messiaen called "Oraison". I first heard "Oraison" years ago as a student of electronic music, and had fallen in love with its simple, beautiful harmonies and profound sense of mystery.

"Oraison" is not only a lovely piece of music, but has historical interest too - it may be the first piece of purely electronic music written expressly for live performance. Also of note is that Messiaen re-arranged "Oraison" for cello and piano and used it for the fifth movement of "Quartet for the End of Time", which he composed in a German prisoner-of-war camp in 1941; the "Quartet" is one of the great classics of 20th-century music.

"Oraison" ("prayer") is from a suite of pieces for six Ondes Martenot called "Fete des Belles Eaux" ("Celebration of the Beautiful Waters"), composed for the Paris International Exposition in 1937. The Ondes Martenot was among the first electronic instruments, and is still among the most expressive. The Continuum's own expressive qualities seemed at least the equal of the Ondes Martenot's, while allowing for polyphony and the possibility of performance of the work by a single player. I transcribed "Oraison" for my Buchla 200e/Continuum system, programmed the modern system in homage to the sound of the Ondes Martenot, and now offer this performance to you.

Oraison, composed by Olivier Messiaen in 1937 for six Ondes Martenot, transcribed for Buchla 200e synthesizer and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller and performed by Richard Lainhart in 2009."

Gear Costs

Ivan posted the following on AH. I thought it was an interesting perspective many of us seem to forget over time, myself included. I asked Ivan if I could put it up here and he gave the ok.

"Just an observation here since gear prices always seem to bring gasps from the audience. It may sound snobbish, but we've all got our opinions.

I started thinking about another forum post regarding Richard Lainhart and his Buchla 200e and Haken Continuum Fingerboard controller. Back around 1978 I worked with a club band that played the local circuit. Their keyboardist had the typical mondo setup. Hammond B-3 with Leslie 122, Yamaha CP-80, Arp String Ensemble, Minimoog, and a Clavinet. I think he had another synth too but I can't remember (maybe an Arp Odyssey). Oh, and Anvil ATA cases for everything (including the B-3 and CP80). This was 1978 and he had, roughly, $20,000 worth of gear. A new Corvette the same year was $11,388. I seem to remember the local university purchasing a mid-size Emu modular synthesizer in 1978 for $18,000.

Fast forward 30 years. Richard Lainhart has a $20,000 Buchla and a $5000 Haken Continuum. This is extremely rare equipment that most of us will never touch. Yet compared to a rock and roll keyboard or synth setup of the 70's or 80's it is inexpensive, especially when considering inflation (a 2008 Corvette is about $60,000). Even a brand new MOTM modular synthesizer is less expensive than a Emu modular was back in 1978.

Anyway, I know for most of us electronic music is a hobby (and an obsession, but that's beside the point). But quality gear still costs a few dollars. Even if you're using soft synths you get what you pay for in terms of computer audio interfaces. It's pretty simple; a Metric Halo or RME box sounds better than an M-Audio box.

My point? I see posts about Tom Oberheim's new synth and people think it should cost less than the new one did 30 years ago! Look, it still costs a lot to produce a piece of quality hardware. I'm getting tired of the bushing-less pots, cheesy construction, and other cost cutting done to turn good circuit designs into inexpensive "mass market" products all in the name of saving a few bucks. What happened to the brick shithouses that people used to build? There is a reason all of these Moogs, Oberheims, and others are still around and working. They were built well using decent components. And guess what; it cost a lot do build them that way. Nothing magical happened between now and back then to drastically reduce quality component costs.

I worked for one of the big pro audio companies that forever changed the price point for mixers. Were they good for the price? Yes. Did a $600 mixer rival the performance of a world-class studio console? No f'ing way, regardless of what the marketing department told you. Not in terms of performance, and not in terms of build quality.

Speaking of which, if do happen to have many thousands of dollars in gear, you might consider spending more than $100 on the mixer that you route it through..."

Richard Lainhart @ TRANZDUCER

YouTube via rlainhart. Via Richard Lainhart of O-Town Media:
"Friends: here's the link to a YouTube playlist of my 200e/Haken Continuum performance at Tranzducer on November 30, 2007. The original performance was continuous, but I had to edit it down to three sections to get around YouTube's 10-minute limit and some camera recording glitches. It's camera audio only, so not the best quality, but otherwise it's a reasonable document of the performance that night. I hope you enjoy it."

Richard Lainhart on Cables, and his Buchla 200e Master Performance Patch

via Richard Lainhart on the Plan b list regarding Markertek cables:

"I use those cables with my 200e system, and I love them, although I don't think they're for everyone. Markertek makes them themselves to order, and I've never had a problem with the build quality (bad jacks, loose solder joints, etc.), and I've purchased over 50 of them. I'd purchased many cables from them in the past for my former job, and found the Switchcraft jacks and double-shield, double-lead format to be really reliable and clean. I got them for my system primarily for the color variety, because I've found that it makes it easier to trace the signal paths in complex patches, but I do appreciate the quality standards Markertek adheres to. Do those standards really make a difference in the signal quality in a modular synth? I don't know; I'm not sure I could hear the difference between these and other decent-quality cables, but I'm happy with them.

There is one drawback with these, though, and that's the size of the jacks and the thickness of the cables. Both are much greater than the original cables that shipped with the 200e, and as a result, the front panel tends to get more obscured in a complex patch. Here's the state of my current master performance patch:

http://www.otownmedia.com/Current_Master_Patch.jpg

It's gotten pretty dense over time, and you'll notice that in some places, particularly the lower left, the cable density is such that it's getting hard to get at the knobs. Thinner cables and smaller jacks would make that easier. But for me at least, the build quality and color selection make them worth it."
