SYNTON FENIX Analog Modular Synthesizer One of 75

via this auction

This one is cross posted on MATRIXSYNTH-P here. Be sure to check out the site for more going up if you haven't recently.

"Extremely rare Synton Fenix analog modular synthesizer, hand built in 1997-98 in the Netherlands. This unit is one of 75 ever produced! The Fenix is a highly sought after analog modular popularized by Aphex Twin on his Analord albums (see video below for an example). I've owned this Fenix for nearly a decade, after trading for it with a respected member of the Analogue Heaven mailing list. The Fenix is a truly unique instrument, and I wish I were able to keep it.

The following items are included in the auction:

Synton Fenix analog modular synthesizer
Primary power supply with a converter for U.S. power outlets
Secondary power supply
Extra back panel with power chassis - should anything ever happen to the original power chassis, you have a backup!

31 Unique Modules: LFO1, LFO2, LFO3, VCO1, VCO2, VCO3, VCF1, VCF2, VCF3, Comperator, Mixer1, Mixer2, Mixer3, EG1, EG2, EG3, VCA1, VCA2, VCA3, VCA4, Slew Limiter, Sample & Hold, Portamento, Noise Generator, Ring Modulator1, Ring Modulator2, CV Mixer1, CV Mixer2, Audio In Processor1, Audio In Processor2, Audio Out

Cosmetic Condition: Excellent. There are a few very minor scratches on the back panel and sides from rack wear, but the face of the Fenix is in extremely good condition. This unit has been kept in a smoke-free environment, and I've never gigged with it.

Operational Condition: Very good. All modules are 100% operational and functional. There are four slightly scratchy pots: VCF1 Frequency, VCF1 Resonance, VCF3 Frequency, and VC3 Resonance. These could easily be cleaned and/or repaired by a tech or an experienced audiophile.

Bid With Confidence: In addition to spotless eBay feedback, I have successfully sold many high dollar value items via the Analogue Heaven mailing list over the years. You can find my seller feedback there by searching the Analogue Heaven archives for my email address: josh (at) digiradi.com

(Note: The above email address is now obsolete, please use eBay's messaging system to contact me!)

Shipping: Please ignore the shipping costs that are estimated below, as that is a just a ballpark figure. Final shipping costs will depend on carrier, location, and shipping options. The Fenix will be professionally packed (double boxed, insured, etc.). I will pay for all packing costs. Buyer is responsible for all actual shipping services such as insurance, tracking, overnight, or 2/3-day service. I will provide a detailed receipt of the shipping costs to the Buyer.

"Note: The Fenix is available for local pickup in the San Francisco Bay Area."

TINRS Introduces New Fenix IV Modular Synthesizer

You might remember the interview with Synton's Felix Visser and This is not Rocket Science's Stijn Haring-Kuipers at Soundmit 2018 on the upcoming new Fenix system. Well, it is here. Update: Priced at 5000 Euros (would be ~ $5600 at todays rate plus any shipping and import fees) - see here on how to get one.

via This is Not Rocket Science

"All you need to play.

An intriguing set of modular building blocks

We think Fenixes are true synthesizer-instruments: they give you all the options you need to explore a very wide range of sonic possibilities. You can learn to play a Fenix quickly and you can still be developing your interaction with it in ten years’ time. The first Fenix was born and bred to satisfy one artist’ wishes for an all in-one system. Our Fenix IV is also born out of this desire with ourselves as the artists.

The density of Fenix I,II and III meant it provided loads of sound in one box. Before eurorack boomed, most modular synthesizers required half a wall of space. Fenix provided all your options in a relatively small container. When Fenix II was released, it packed the most punch for its size anywhere on the market. With Fenix IV we think we continue this tradition. We’ve extended the sounds by adding our best from the digital world. The intention is to provide a toolbox for you to make sound with, and not put too much of our flavour in the sounds themselves. Choices are made for maximum sonic variety. For example: we’ve upgraded the delay line from Fenix II with a musical element. In Fenix IV we are now providing a tuneable version so you can use it as a physical model of a string.

There is a flow to every Fenix. All the modules have the same direction for inputs and outputs: roughly left to right and top to bottom. This is the same in educational diagrams that talk about synthesizer structure. We managed to consistently apply this giant swipe from up left to down right across our Fenix too. You can distinguish types of signals on a Fenix by the colour coding – we’ve taken this helpful visual aid and extended it to giving the modules a coloured grouping that corresponds between the knobs and the jacks. Another feature of the Fenix family is the waterline that divides the knobs from the jacks. Keeping the knobs up top means your patching never gets in the way of your twiddling. This division also helps to maintain a sense of overview with lots of cables patched in.

We see the Fenix family as having a “Yes, and” mentality. The usual divide of tonal versus experimental or additive versus subtractive synthesis does not exist in a Fenix. You can have everything at the same time and you can have multiple TYPES of oscillators, filters, lfo’s, envelopes and effects to do your patching with. We have added the usual analog versus digital divide to this “Yes, and“ mentality. There is no need to choose, you can have it all.

All the modules in our Fenix IV – listed by colour grouping:

YELLOW – Oscillators and sound sources

Input
Interface to external sound sources – has an envelope tracker and a gate and trigger threshold.

New Synton Fenix IV Progress Update via TiNRS

via This is Not Rocket Science:

"Fenix Experiment board no 3

This is a lots-of-DSP board. Most of the things on this Experiment board are a shell for DSP. We have developed a plugin board with sufficient processing power and memory to drive all the things. Currently, we have one of these MCU-boards working and connected to Experiment board no 3.

Synton Fenix Modular Analogue Synth SN V59

"Despite the look, it is not semi modular like the Arp 2600 or the Korg MS-20 but fully modular and fully patchable, like a current Eurorack system but all included very cleverly on one front panel. All built with discrete Through The Hole components, not SMT technology. Which translates to better (vintage) sound and future serviceability.

Synton Fenix! Analog Modular Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"This auction is for the original Synton Fenix. Very rare unit (only about 75 made!) and in very good condition!! Just recently checked, tuned and calibrated. The Fenix started a new era in newer analog modulars and has made quite an impression(!). The 75 units have been spread all over the world and found there homes at elite synth heads and recording artist. This is something unique and fun to play..!

Included are a large number of high quality banana patch cables, power supply and the 2 manuals.

A direct descendant of the highly respected Synton 3000 modular synthesizer and the Syrinx lead synth, the Fenix offers traditional analog technology and innovative new features in a compact design.

Concept:
Designed with a fixed set of separate modules that need to be interconnected like a modular (like an Korg MS50 or Roland System 700).
There are 65 rotary controls at the upper half of the front panel and about 140 banana-sockets at the lower half. The unit is about 5 in deep, 19 in wide and 9 U high.

Modules:
Rather than creating identical modules, almost every module is different from the other. This means that every LFO and Envelope Generator (and most mixers, VCO's, VCF's etc.) has different controls and in/outs."

Original SYNTON Fenix 1 - Only 75 Ever Made (1999)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Only 75 units were ever made of this very rare synth. It is used and loved by the likes of Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) and Richard D James (Aphex Twin). This synth is a rare sight on auction sites as there are so few and artists tend to hold on to their Fenixes as they are such a special piece of gear.

The original Synton Fenix 1 is designed and built by the original 1973-1989 Synton team as their ultimate modular synthesizer. None of the available modular synthesizer quite fulfilled their needs and wishes so they came back together once again and built their dream machine, and they succeeded! It's a synth like no other, it's tonal range is extreme, changing from rich and lush sounding to mix-cutting fierceness within a few twists of the knobs.

The layout is designed with live performance in mind, knobs have a great feel and are very well spaced out, especially for a synth so versatile equipped as this. Modules are numerous and diverse. The three VCO's all have their own properties and so do the VCF and EG modules. Each have their own distinctive parameters and in-/outputs making them serving multiple roles at once, for instance VCF 3 has a three input audio mixer as input stage, removing the need for a seperate mixer module. VCO's go as low as LFO frequencies and the range of LFO reaches to the audible spectrum. Stackable bananaplugs make patching quick and flexible.

The rear of the Fenix is equiped with 6 3,5mm jackplugs which are routed to bananajacks on the front for easy integration with other modulares or Midi to CV modules. The front has both a 6,3 mm stereo jack output as a two channel audio input for routing external signals through the Fenix.

TINRS Fenix IV Update

An update via This Is Not Rocket Science:

"Fenix IV assembling parts
Six more weeks until Superbooth…

We are working hard on the first Fenix IV prototype and alternate between 'this is madness' and 'this is awesome'. Probably both are true.

All the parts has been tried and tested in Experiment Boards 1, 2 and 3. Everything works and we are happy with our sounds and effects. Now these parts have to make a mythical beast. The CPU plug-in boards and filter voice boards are in the mail. Chips are being ordered. Power, midi and plug board are in-house and partially assembled. The tiny headphone board is ready. Our interconnect board – connecting the modules to the jacks and replaces the wiring harness – will be ordered together with big board. Flying in from all over the world, all the pieces are coming together.

Synton Fenix I Modular Analog Synthesizer

"For sale is a legendary Synton Fenix I modular analog synthesizer. These are very rare and only 75 were ever made. This one is fully functional and in excellent shape. Front and back look mint, some light rack scratches on the side. Lightly used in smoke free home studio and never had any functionality issues. Need to raise funds for some necessary studio upgrades. This is an awesome sounding synth, with a unique character, very versatile and loads of features in a small package. Aphex Twin used it for Chosen Lords Fenix Funk. See pictures below for more details. Includes power supple, and a couple dozen banana patch cables to get you going. If you are considering another modular like a Serge, Buchla, Arp 2600, this one is worth checking out and is equally powerful, along with being much rarer. Thousands of 2600's are out there, but only 75 Fenix I's. Don't miss out!"
