WMD's Freq Boutique 018 Denver, CO

Published on Sep 12, 2018 WMDevices

"Each month, we host a modular synthesizer showcase in Denver, CO called Freq Boutique. The event happens each second Monday at 8pm MST.

With 5 or 6 performances each week, there is always something for everyone. Beginners in eurorack, music producers, and just plain fans of electronic music are all welcome. The night is free to the public and happy hour all night long.

The event has grown from just a few performers to 10-12 signups each month. W

This month, our performers were:
Mike McCarthy aka Gerald Fjord
David Soto aka Sine Mountain
Grant Outerbridge aka Memorybell
Ryan Halgren
Mike Thomas

We stream the event live each month and then upload a recording with the set breaks taken out within a day or so. This is that recording.

WMD Mantic Conceptual - FLEX in Eurorack

Published on Mar 21, 2018 WMDevices

"The Mantic Conceptual FLEX is an amazing and unique effect originally designed and released in a Guitar Pedal format. We recently teamed up with the Mantic team to adapt the pedal into a Eurorack module.

In this video we go through the features and knobset of the Mantic Euro Flex integrated into a modular synthesizer. We run bass lines, Drums, and an entire mix through it by using it as an auxillary send on the WMD Performance Mixer.

Other modules include the WMD Arpitecht,WMD/SSF Spectrum. WMD/SSF MMF, WMD/SSF ADSRVCA. All rhythms are triggered by a WMD protorype trigger sequencer, which is coming soon ;).

"Available soon at dealers worldwide and at WMDevices.com

We recently helped our friends over at Mantic Effects adapt their popular FLEX guitar pedal into the Eurorack modular format.

Initially released in 2014, the Mantic Flex lead the charge in the recent upsurge of PLL (phase locked loop) popularity and continues to set itself apart from other PLL's in that it is an original design and not a Schumann derivative. The Flex Pro is voiced and biased to offer what we found to be the most readily usable range of PLL sounds in a broad musical context, without compromising the users ability to experiment.

Notable users include Nick Reinhardt, Adrian Belew, Jack White, Justin Meldal-Johnson, Simon Francis, Claudio Sanchez, Ikey Owens, and Juan Alderete.

Added features in the Eurorack module include full voltage control, integrated input VCA, a dry/wet mix, VCO Offset control as well as a CV Octave control that interacts with the VCO Offset.

Alias Zone: A Vision of the Future (performed by Chris Meyer | Learning Modular)

Learning Modular

"I performed this piece live as part of WMD's & the Colorado Modular Synth Society's Freq Boutique 045 on January 11, 2021. I recorded it locally as I played so I could present a higher-quality version for you, although this is still the stereo "board mix" (not an edited multitrack - in other words, it's not perfect).

For in-depth notes on how I composed, patched, and performed the piece, I wrote a couple of in-depth posts for my Patrons:

WMD Digital VCA MKIII - Dual Zero-Crossing VCA and Polarizer - Announcement

video upload by WMDevices

"Announcing the MKIII version of the WMD Digital VCA eurorack module. This new and improved dual VCA and Polarizer (bipolar VCA) has a zero-crossing detector and noise source. At only 8HP, this module can do many cool things for any modular synth in a small space."

WMD Digital VCA MKIII - In Depth Demo

video upload by WMDevices

"WMD is back and finally in production with the new Digital VCA MKIII eurorack module. This modern take on a classic WMD design combines a Zero Crossing Detector (ZCD), a Voltage Controlled Attenuator (VCA), and a couple noise sources to make a super versatile tool at only 8HP. Watch as Alex Anderson explains many of the features and use cases.

04:55 Remove clicks and pops the ZCD

20:56 Mixing capabilities

via WMD

"I've done several designs of this circuit over the years, the first one had no knobs, the second was too small, the MKIII is finally how this circuit should be packaged. This module does some really cool stuff and is super useful in any system.

The Digital VCA lets signal through like a normal VCA, but the CV and attenuation level is controlled digitally. This lets us do things like wait until there is a zero crossing to change the amplitude, resulting in clickless amplitude changes.

The Trigger mode causes the VCA to only update when a trigger is received. The addition of a noise circuit for each side let us do a very quick and easy sample and hold that never droops. With no input, 5V is normaled to the attenuator, so you get a 0-5V sample and hold. In Bipolar mode, you can get -5 to +5V.

Both sides have bipolar VCA mode (polarizer), which lets them invert the signal when negative CV comes in. Also known as ring modulation. With the zero crossing detector, this can produce some super wild wave shapes.

Limited run of 410 units for Eurorack Modular Synthesizer systems. I won't be making more or doing another version in the future."

WMD Eurorack Drum machine and Empress Effects Zoia

Published on Jun 17, 2019 WMDevices

"Mixing worlds between guitar pedals and modular synths is a super fun way to get more out of a minimal set up.

In this video, WMD Metron is in control of a 4 channel drum machine. Each of our drum modules, Chimera, Fracture, and Crucible are running through the WMD/SSF Blender 4 channel mixer with 2 drums going to Left and 2 drums to the right.

The ZOIA is receiving CV (gate signals) and Audio from this @wmdevices Eurorack drum machine. The Gate signal from Metron is triggering an ADSR envelope on the ZOIA. This ADSR opens a filter connected to a randomized polyphonic chord on the ZOIA made possible using the new scale options on the ZOIA’s quantizer tied to a single random LFO.

ZOIA is processing 2 separate channels of audio with 2 drum tracks on the Left channel and 2 drum tracks on the right, each channel has separate effects going into the ZOIA’s mixer and lastly into a stereo reverb on the ZOIA."
