Barton Musical Circuits BMC107 Dual Comparator w/ Logic Outputs

video upload by boogdish

BMC107 Schematic Walkthrough. Dual Comparator W/Logic Outputs

video upload by boogdish

via Barton Musical Circuits
"This module is composed of two voltage controlled comparators which are gate outputs that turn on when an input voltage exceeds a threshold voltage. Four additional gate outputs turn off and on depending on the relative outputs of the comparators. This was initially designed as a way to add soft-sync features to VCOs that only have hard-sync, but has also been useful for turning envelope generators into gated loops

This design can be used with +/-15V systems with a few resistor value changes."

Barton Musical Circuits MWC & UWQ Eurorack Modules

MWC Demo 1

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by boogdish

"New prototype from Barton Musical Circuits. MWC = Multi-Window Comparator. Sorry for the blur, I'm working in a basement and the light's not great.

In a nutshell, this looks at your input voltage, converts it into a number, then looks that number up on a data table and turns a +5V output on if the table tells it to. It does this 4 times, for 4 different outputs. There are attenuation and offset knobs for conditioning the input signal, write/erase buttons for writing the "on/off" tables, and save/load and bank select switches for saving your tables to the internal EEPROM.

The write/erase buttons could also be replaced by input jacks so you're rhythm generating devices could write the tables. The board has euro/motm power connector pads. The board has 2 pc mounted pots, and it also has 4 mounting holes so people can feel free to create their own layout. I am going to try to offer a Eurorack front panel for this as well.

I will be writing build documentation for this soon. I'll have boards/PICs to offer for this next month, and a set will be $20 plus postage."

UWQ Demo 1

Published on Nov 13, 2012 by boogdish

"A dry boring demo of the features of a new quantizer module I've designed. More info will be up at www.bartonmusicalcircuits.com after I get it written.

To summarize: Instead of pre-loaded scales/modes, you're using write/erase buttons to create a data table that records all possible outputs, if you saw my MWC demo, this will seem familiar (I actually copy/pasted some of the code).

There are additional controls for: turning the quantizer off, triggering a new sample (it constantly samples when nothing is plugged into this jack), controlling whether the quantizer quantizes above or below the input voltage, a "softness" control which acts like a voltage controlled portamento with fun interactions with the trigger-new-sample control. It can also save two banks of notes onto the internal EEPROM. There is also a bi-polar/positive only switch so it can interact with more voltage sources.

There are input jacks for the quantized signal, a secondary cv (with attenuation pot), external softness cv (with attenuation pot), write and erase jacks for triggering from external sources, trigger-new-sample, and quantize on/off.

Finally, and I didn't get into this on the demo, the board is set up so that the range of the module is adjusted by just a couple of trim pots (an input attenuator and an output amplifier) so individual builders can decide whether they want more range or accuracy. Different people will use this differently so I'll leave it up to them. On this demo I had it set up for 10V range. The table of possible outputs has 1024 parts (because the PIC has a 10-bit ADC), so this gives me 102.4 pitches/octave. At 5V you'd get 204.8 pitches per octave.

This prototype had a few errors on the PCB, so I'm waiting for a revised PCB to show up (should be in the next couple weeks), and if I got all my errors on that, then boards should be available to ship in early to mid January. I think a board/chip combo will be $22. This uses all through hole components, and pc-mounted pots, but has mounting holes so people don't have to use the pc mounted pots. It has euro/motm power connecters and will work with +/-12v or +/-15v with no modification.

I think I'll also be selling a few of these with hand made front panels if anyone thinks this is a cool module but is intimidated by all of the wiring. This is 8HP in euro-rack."

New Barton Musical Circuits BMC093 Diode Shaper VCA & BMC092 Sample Release

BMC093 Diode Shaper VCA Demovideo upload by boogdish

"Demonstration/Overview of a new synthesizer module design.
I provide PCBs/Panels for DIY builders and also sell pre-built modules on my site. Visit https://www.bartonmusicalcircuits.com... to get more information on this module. PCBs and fully built modules can be ordered from: https://bartonmusicalcircuits.com/sho..."

This module is a VCA that uses rectified feedback/feedforward to provide waveshaping. Both the feedback/forward knobs can provide positive or negative feedback and the external CV control is an attenuverter. It also includes switchable Zener diode limiters to soften the output when large amounts of positive feedback are used. The module is DC coupled, so it can be used with LFOs, Envelopes and CV sources as well waveforms. The DC coupling also allows for DC offset to be applied to the input which increases harmonic possibilities.
This module is designed for 12V systems, but works with 15V systems with just one resistor change. The documentation gives tips on how to tweak or modify the circuit.

BMC092. Sample Release Demo video upload by boogdish

"This is a demo/overview of a new synthesizer module design. More information (schematics, ordering, etc) can be found at bartonmusicalcircuits.com/samplerelease/"

The Sample Release is a 4 channel bipolar envelope generator module that can also act as a sample-and-hold or track-and-hold. Each channel takes a voltage input, samples it and then that voltage goes to zero volts with it's rate controlled by the release knob. This generates control envelopes that fall when positive voltage inputs are applied and rise when negative voltage inputs are applied. Each channel has a toggle that disables the release function and lets the channel act as a traditional sample-and-hold or track-and-hold. Additionally, a +5V supply is normalized to the voltage input so the module can also be used as a normal release generator

BMC105 JFET Phaser

Demonstration video upload by boogdish

BMC105 schematic walkthrough

via Barton Musical Circuits

"This module is a 12-stage phaser or all-pass filter with resonance control. When the filter̢۪s output is mixed with the input, this creates notches in the frequency response. Classic phasing sounds are achieved by modulating the frequency control with an LFO. It can also be used as a 4-stage filter by removing the top PCB and jumpering pins 1 and 2 of the pin connectors together.

This module uses two circuit boards sandwhiched together. It's designed for 12V systems and can be easily modified for use with 15V systems."

Barton Musical Circuits BMC106 Resonant Glide

video upload by boogdish

via Barton Musical Circuits

"This module is composed of two Sallen-Key low pass filters designed to be used on very low frequencies. When pitch control voltages are processed through this, it creates a portamento which then turns into vibrato. Depending on resonance control, this vibrato can die out almost immediately or go on for the duration of the note. When used with envelope generators, this module can be used to add extra "bumpiness" to an envelope signal allowing for more harmonic content. With a gate signal, the module can be used as a simple envelope generator with equal sloped attack and release.

This design can be used with +/-15V systems without modification"

M2C Short Demo.mpg

"This is a short vid demontrating the basic functions of Dave Kendall's CMOS based MIDI 2 Clock Converter.
For the patch i use the M2C (controlled by Cubase), my new BinSeq (divider/attenuverter based sequencer), Boogdish's simple Quantizer and my dual X-4046 VCO (Thomas Henry).
For clocking the BinSeq i use the gate out of the M2C, the stop out resets the BinSeq. So each time i stop the Cubase sequencing software the BinSeq gets a reset. When staring the pattern from the beginning, the sequencer is in sync again."
