In 2009 I recreated many favorite 80s drumbeats on the then new Korg Electribe samplers, sampling the Linndrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland CR78, TR808 and more. I copied the patterns by ear and also tried to catch the vibe of each original track as much as possible, using only the internal EQ and sampler fx. Later I expanded the series to synthesizer medleys and full tracks. It led me to a lot of contacts, collaborations and releases.

Now I wanted to reboot this in portable music production. Jim Audo's GR16 iPad app felt very much like the Electribe SX in use. So I started transferring my old beats to the newer medium, improved and expanded them to do another series of classic drumbeats, to inspire new music.

The Novation Launchpad Pro Mk3 integrates well with it and gives more tactile feel to it, as with the Electribes. It's however not necessary to use it.

The result is a great sounding retro beat machine that now even fits on an iPhone.

And yes, that's an LM2 at the back, not LM1.

Enjoy

CR78 Essential 80s Synthpop part 1 (Juno Synths, Electribe SX)

YouTube via harlemnightsmusic

"Tributing the early 80s classics again, this time a softer side, based on the Roland CR78 drummachine, which was used in many of my all time favourite New Wave tracks. Drum sounds were sampled and patterns rebuilt in the Korg Electribe ESX, with additional Linndrum sounds where in the original tracks acoustic drumkits were added.

All synth and bass sounds are from my Roland Juno 106 (1984) and Juno 60 (1982) synths, trying to emulate the Prophets and other synths used in the original tracks. Additional fx by Boss SE50.

All recreated by ear. None of the original tracks were sampled.

- Daryl Hall & John Oates - I can't go for that
- Gary Numan - Remind me to Smile
- Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) - Enola Gay
- Soft Cell - Tainted Love
- Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight
- Roxy Music - Jealous Guy
- Blondie - Atomic

Enjoy

Recreated by ear (loosely). No sampling of the original track was involved. Check out my other vids for more 80s recreations.

Synths used:
- Korg Electribe SX (Oberheim DMX drums, Linn cowbell)

"Tribute for all ya homeboyz... This time some classic hip hop beats, recreated on my Korg Electribe using Oberheim DMX and DX sounds. As always, no actual records were sampled. All recreated by ear.

TR-808 Classic Beats on Korg Electribe SX part 1

YouTube via harlemnightsmusic

"Recreations, again by ear, of some classic early 80s beats that were originally made on a Roland TR-808 drummachine. This became the signature sound for freestyle music and later for house.

No actual records were sampled. All sounds are from the 808, except the synth drum solos played on the ribbon controller. I noticed that some of the tracks actually used LinnDrum kicks *. Only the SX's internal effects and synthesis were used.

Mantronix - 808 Beats
Shannon - Let the Music Play
Freeez - IOU
Man Parrish - Hip Hop Bebop
GLOBE & Whiz Kid - Play that Beat Mr. DJ *
Nineteen - Paul Hardcastle *
C.O.D. - In the Bottle
Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing

More in part 2"

Moog Realistic MG-1 (1981) vs Cherry Audio MG-1 VST (2020)

harlemnightsmusic

"Comparing Cherry Audio's Surrealistic MG-1 Plus digital plugin to a vintage Realistic Moog MG1. One of the best analog emulating plugins that I have heard. Sounds were matched on the VST to the originals first by sight, then by ear as closely as possible."

Harlem Nights - 2010 (TR-707 & Juno 60 synthesizer)

YouTube via harlemnightsmusic

"It's 2010... This time a new jam, using my Korg ESX and Roland Juno 60 synthesizer. All drum sounds are from Roland TR 707. Compared to the Juno 106 that I used so far, the Juno 60 has many of the same controls but a very different sound character - I like both

Drums, choir, fx: Korg Electribe SX sampler
Bass: Novation Super Bass Station
Synths: Roland Juno 60

Next: Roland CR78 New Wave classics"
