Creative Music Incubator unites experimental sonic artists on the first Monday of every month to share creative concepts, explore new sonic possibilities and collaborate in new line ups and in unique situations. Each month is curated and hosted by a member of the NYC experimental music community. Creative Music Incubator is a monthly event produced by the Oxygen Music Collective and is dedicated to the experimentation and exploration of new sonic possibilities.

INFREQUENCY

"Richard Lainhart among the sound artists who create new compositions based on the earliest known recording of the human voice.

The original recording was made by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville on April 9, 1860 using his own invention, the phonautograph, and consists of a series of scratches on a roll of blackened paper. Scott had never developed a way to play back his recordings and they went unheard for 148 years. In 2008, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory converted the thin lines back into audio, allowing us to hear a woman singing a segment of the folk song “Au Clair de la Lune”.

INFREQUENCY made an open call was made for artists to submit their own interpretations of the 1860 recording by Édouard-Léon Scott. This project is a conceptual extension of breathing life back into this document through modern technology; deciphering a voice that was etched into a thin layer of oil lamp smoke, and featuring a diverse group of international contemporary composers, creating new works from this ten second piece of history.

Richard Lainhart's contribution, "La Lune dans la Lumière de Jour" (The Moon in the Light of Day) uses only the original recording as its sound source, to which he applies extreme time-stretching and spectral transformations to create a haunting new work of mysterious metallic timbres.

This free, digital-only release from INFREQUENCY collects together nine exceptional submissions as high quality MP3s.

Live Moog Space Jam Part II

"On Friday evening, May 19, starting at 7:00 PM EDST, musicians Jordan
Rudess and Richard Lainhart will perform live in WDFH's Studio 2.
Join us for Moog Space Jam Part II, hosted by Treavor Hastings.
Richard Lainhart and Jordan Rudess will be performing live, chatting,
and bringing along some influential music from their own libraries
for this three hour event.

Jordan is a world-class pianist as well as a highly accomplished
recording artist, composer, producer and performer, and has just
completed a world tour as keyboardist with the progressive rock group
Dream Theater. Richard Lainhart is an award winning composer,
author, and filmmaker. He is no stranger to the WDFH air waves and
has performed his own solo compositions with us several times in the
past. He and Jordan are coming back for their second round of Moog
Space improvisation.

Jordan will be performing on his vintage Moog Model D and Voyager
MiniMoogs, and Richard will be playing Moog virtual instruments
running on laptop and Muse Receptor. This is an event not to be

VEMIA Auction Update - Joel Chadabe Late 60s CEMS System Goes Up

The official auction start date is Nov 3 and runs until Nov 11, however you can see some items listed here. From the description it looks like you can start bidding now.

The rarest item to be auctioned? Joel Chadabe's late 60s CEMS system (pictured - click the image for the full size shot). The CEMS system was located at the Electronic Music Studio at State University of New York at Albany. You can see and read more about Joel Chadabe and the system at his official website. Joel also wrote Electric Sound which recently came up for auction here. Side Note from the comments of this previous post: Richard Lainhart of O-Town Media learned to play electronic music on the CEMS system pictured here.

Peter Forrest who runs the auction let me know that the auction will include Felix' Visser's own Syntons. Felix is the man behind Synton, pictured here . His items start at number 5500 and go to 5539.

"Some notes about this system: the large knobless module at the end of each sequencer is a Linear Mixer that Bob custom-designed for this system. These were very clean simple mixers that could mix from DC up into the audo range. They were intended mainly to mix the CV outputs from the sequencer stages together, but since they were so clean, we would often use them to mix the oscillator and filter outputs as well.

The jackfields at the bottom of each cabinet are patchbays that connect the cabinets together. In its original configuration, there were bundles of cable behind each cabinet that connected the patchbays to each other, so you could cable between the cabinets without needing extra-long patchcords.

The cabinet with the large white panel contains all the components of the Master Analog Clock, another custom design. The four vertical slots in the third row down from the top are Nixie lamps; these would display the current time count (in 10th of a second, I think). The top row are 8 individual clock subdividers, which could be set to send out divisions or multiples of the basic clock pulse. Below all that are the 8 clock outputs, any of which could be routed to any of the sequencers. The purpose of all this was to provide a master timing source for the sequencers, so they could all be synced with complex rhythmic relationships. The sequencers could also free-run, so you could have any combination of master-synced and free-running.

The remaining cabinet contains most of the actual audio-generating modules, although as I recall there were a couple of additonal filters and oscillators in some of the control cabinets as well.

At the time, it was the largest integrated Moog system in the world, and probably the largest integrated Moog sequencer system ever."

Richard Lainhart Releases A New Album on Ex Ovo

February 26, 2008 — Richard Lainhart, award-winning composer, performer, and filmmaker, is pleased to announce that Ex Ovo, founded in January 2006 for the love of dulcet drone music, has issued a release of his CD White Night. The disc is also available in the States from CDeMUSIC .

Ex Ovo writes: Back in 1974, one year before Brian Eno's first landmark in ambient music, a young musician from New York wrote down a fragment of beauty's hidden story with the minimal vocabulary of sine waves on the young black skin of a Moog synthesizer. The first release on CD features Richard Lainhart's masterpiece in its original 29-minutes-version. There's no single second to add, after this time everything is told though nothing has been said.

Richard talks about the work's origin:
" "White Night" was composed and recorded in the late fall of 1974 at the State University of New York at Albany in the Coordinated Electronic Music Studio (CEMS). CEMS was created by my composition teacher Joel Chadabe with design and custom fabrication by Robert Moog and was, at the time, the largest integrated Moog modular synthesizer studio in the world.

"The piece consists of a dense, continuous four-note chord, each note in the chord recorded in a separate pass to one track on a Scully 4-track studio recorder. Each track consists of a single sine wave oscillator which is frequency modulated by a group of eight additional sine wave oscillators. Those oscillators are all tuned to different tones, each harmonically related to the fundamental chord tone. The amplitude of each harmonic oscillator is continuously varied under the control of an individual sequencer, and each sequencer is free-running - that is, the sequencers are not synchronized to each other, but rather running in their own independent timebases.The result is a continuously-changing complex harmonic waveform which modulates the frequency of the chord tone oscillator, generating a continuously-changing complex timbre based on the fundamental pitch of the note.

"The center tone of "White Night" is 212 Hz, slightly higher than the G below Middle C. The other notes create a chord consisting of a perfect fifth below the center tone, a major seventh just below the center tone, and a major second above the center tone. "White Night" was composed without reference to the standard A-440 tuning system, as we had no such pitch reference in the studio; I just picked a center tone that felt right, and went from there. As such, "White Night" lives in its own pitch world.

"The title "White Night" came about so: it was late December in upstate New York when I was finishing the piece, and a blizzard passed through town the night of the final mix. As I sat in the glow of the sequencers and tape decks in the University studio listening to the final version, I looked out the window and saw a security light on a building opposite the studio illuminating the blowing snow as it drifted off the roof. All I could see was the snow swirling in the light against the blackness; a moving painting continually drawn, erased, and redrawn, always changing, but always the same. It may sound bleak, but it wasn't - it was beautiful. It seemed to me that the image of the dancing whiteness perfectly matched the sound of the piece, and so I called it "White Night" to commemorate that evening of wind and snow."

This track is completely improvised in realtime without backing tracks or edits, and is for Buchla 200e controlled by a Haken Continuum multi-dimensional keyboard. All the sounds heard here are from the Buchla, with the exception of the flute-like sound at the end, which is one of the Continuum's physical modeling instruments called Slide Wind. The ghost echo behind the Slide Wind sound is from the 200e.

Richard Lainhart Memorial Tribute - Mar 4 at Roulette

"A program of music and remembrances honoring musician, composer and filmmaker Richard Lainhart (Feb 14, 1953–Dec 30, 2011). The program will be followed by a 30 minute screening/performance of Richard's last film work 'History of the Future' with a live improvised soundtrack by the 'Orchestra of the Future.'

The film, 'History of the Future' is sourced entirely from technical, medical, and instructional animations from the 30s through the 70s, all of it public-domain content from the Prelinger Archives. There are no cartoons as such, and nothing comedic, although neither is there anything graphic or otherwise objectionable - much of it is fairly mysterious, in fact. The film is entirely silent, and so all the soundtrack audio will come from the players.

Remembering Bob Moog

Today marks the fourth year of Bob Moog's passing. Play a little something for him today.

Don't forget, the "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog Museum Exhibit" runs from August 29 - April 30. Keith Emerson and others will be there opening weekend.

Update: Mark Pulver's Moog tattoo. Mark was good friends with Bob Moog. I remember him getting this tattoo after his passing.

Today we also celebrate the Bob Moog Foundation's third anniversary of making waves. "50 years ago, American maverick inventor Robert Moog began developing electronic instruments that altered the course of modern music for all time and have since become an integral part of our musical culture. Jordan Rudess, keyboard virtuoso, and Richard Lainhart, synthesist extraordinaire, will be performing live online on Sunday, May 23, at 1 PM Eastern Daylight Savings Time, to honor Bob Moog on his 70th birthday, and on the 50th anniversary of his company Moog Music. We'll be using old and new Moog instruments exclusively, including a vintage Mini-Moog, a modern Moog Voyager Mini-Moog, Arturia's Moog Modular V software, and a Moog Etherwave Theremin, in a classic electronic space improvisation streaming live on the Internet from O-Town Live."

Bob was a great man, and a good friend, and we still miss him."

Update: the Moog hockey table has been verified as real. You might remember the Moog phone. Note these were made by Moog in the 80s long after Bob Moog left the company.

Update on the hockey game via brian in the comments: "It's not called Moog hockey, but "Super Chexx" hockey. Sadly, the Super Chexx game has ALWAYS been collectible in the arcade world anyway, due to it's clear plastic bubble look and the sound effects.

With "sound by Moog" written up there at the top as I recall. It sounds REALLY bad, but grainy as hell in a good way. I'd be surprised if it was 8-bit. More like 4..."
