Modular Sounds 1

YouTube Uploaded by pjoris2 on Aug 16, 2010

"My first youtube-video and the first patch on my reorganized modular. It showcases my new Livewire Audio Frequency Generator and uses nearly all modules of my modular.

The patch is essentially as follows:

The basic sequence is played by the Livewire AFG with random pulse width (controlled by S&H type output from the Makenoise Wogglebug) and harmonic modulation (controlled by a Doepfer LFO). Pulse and animated pulse outputs go in to a lowpass-gate (Makenoise QMMG), Buchla/Serge's take on a VCA/low pass filter. The low-pass gates are controlled by the clock from the analog sequencer and a bit of echo from Doepfers VC DSP effects is mixed in.

Pitch and tempo is controlled by a 8-step sequence from the Analog Systems RS-200 analog sequencer, quantized and transposed by 2 Analogue Solutions sequencers. The second sequencer steps every 32th step of the first, the third every 8th step of the second, so the basic sequence is 32x8x8=2048 steps long). There is some random switching of the 3 channels of the RS-200 programmed to nearly - but not quite - the same sequence, with slides introduced in the third channel.

The "drums" are played by a Dotcom system, again clocked from the RS-200 through a clock divider. The 4/4 beat is made by the dotcom VCO through a lowpass filter, with a short envelope. The "hihats" are some noise through another lowpass filter with short evelope and then treated with a Korg PME-40x analog multi-effects. I put on phaser, delay, and flanger (hey, I just got the thing, of course I'm going to use it all).

The only human intervention, after patching of course, is turning on/off the connection in a dotcom multiple wich receives the 2th and 8th divisions of the basic clock tempo. This cause the bassdrum to drop for half of the beats.

Confused ? Have a look at the video ..."

"It's a fairly simple patch. The idea was to put down a drone with a number of slightly detuned, unstable analogue oscillators with on top a random sparkling melody. It turned out a bit different ...

The drone consists of 2 Doepfer A-110 standard VCOs and a livewire AFG tuned approximately to unison. The pulse output of the 3 VCOs go into a mixer. Frequencies and pulse widths of the 3 VCOs are modulated by various LFOs or looping envelopes. The signals are mixed together and send to the main mixer.

The random melody is the Hertz Donut digital oscillator of the Harvestman. The frequency of the oscillator is determined by the random output of the Wiard Noisering through a Doepfer Quantizer. After a while I introduce amp and shape modulation of the primary oscillator by the modulation oscillator.

This together was a bit boring - so for variety I then decided to a split the drone over 3 audio paths: 1 untreated (with which the video begins), 1 through the Harvestman Malgorithm (with Nyquist frequency modulated by a looping envelope), and one through the MakeNoise Quad Multimode Gate (lowpass & VCA mode) opened and closed by an envelope from the MakeNoise Maths module (triggered by the clock output from the Noisering). This is then again filtered by another channel of the QMMG (in lowpass mode) with cut-off frequency determined by a slow looping envelope from Maths.

I then decided to have a beat on this, which comes from a drum pattern I programmed on the Korg Elektribe ER-1 -- I'm not much into drum programming so this one is rather boring ...

In the end I found the high random sequence too annoying so I ran part of the sequence through a Doepfer A-163 VC Frequency Divider to generate a sub-octave from it and ran it through the Korg PME-40X Phase, Analogue Delay, and Flanger modules.

The flow of the video is: (1) Basic Drone, (2) Malgorithm treated signal comes in, (3) filtered drone (from the QMMG), (4) drums start, (5) suboctave of the random sequence added, (6) pure Hertz Donut signal added, which is increasingly modulated, (7) everything is gradually mixed away, till we are left (8) with some analogue delay feedback from the Korg pedals.

Hmmm, maybe not that simple.

The middle part is a bit chaotic, it is hard to find the right balance between repeating and random with the Noisering and the drums and modular were not synced. And yes, I felt like playing with the video effects in Vegas Movie Studio ...."

"Some more chord action, this time using the NTO+PCO from using the Animal + 2 Kilpatrick oscillators. Now through the variable slope filter + variable width bandpass. Again arps from the MicroStation (left one of the 4 knobs on the Korg controls gate length) in Kilpatrick Midi-to-CV then to ASR on the Red CV panel. Modulation of a bunch of filter parameters. Delay from the Ibanez DM1000.

Atmosphere from The Glenlivet."

Modular Sounds 5

Published on Mar 17, 2013 pjoris2·10 videos

"Primarily a test of the functionality of the Flame Chord Machine and some modules I picked up yesterday, so no real track. Chords and arpeggiation are generated by the Flame Chord Machine in Quant Mode. Only major and unison chords used -- root tone is controlled by an Analogue Solutions SQ8 sequencer.

Chords are played by the Analogue Systems Sorceror: 3 RS-95 VCOs through a mixer, the RS-110 Multimode Filter, VCA and finaly through the RS-240 Bode Frequency Shifter. Some modulation of pulse width, filter cutoff, and amount of frequency shift (using 2 envelopes and LFOs).

Arpeggiation is played by an E350 Morphing Terrarium and an E340 Cloud Generator. The E340 goes through a STG Sea Devils Filter, the E350 through a VCA and both are treated by the E580 Resampling Mini-Delay in "Tape" mode.

"Drums" are controlled by gate signals of the Oberkorn. "Bassdrum" is a sine from a Doepfer A-110 standard VCO with frequency swept by an envelope. "Hihats" are some noise through a Make Noise QMMG -- two channels one in lowpass, and second in high pass mode and both go through an RS-90 Echo.

All recorded on 7 tracks of the Zoom R16."

Modular Tracks 1

YouTube Published on Jul 6, 2012 by pjoris2

"The first real "track" here. I wanted to do something summery like Roedelius or so. Not sure if it is the Belgium weather but it didn't end up that summery.

No full explanation of the patches this time, but some info:
- main sequence is from the oberkorn: 2 16 note sequences, each played twice, using a clock divider and sequential switch
- these sequences are played by the Livewire AFG through the AMSyths JP6 filter
- then through my Korg PME4: 3 analoge delays+flanger
- baseline is from the 3rd channel of the oberkorn, played by a doepfer VCO through the AS multimode filter
- the "strings" are the could generator controlled by an SQ8 sequencer through the AMSynths JP8 filter (clocked at 1 step for each 16 steps on the oberkorn), through a Boss DD20 delay
- everything is transposed by a second SQ8
- all notes are quantized using 2 doepfer quantizers
This is recorded in one run. Then I added two tracks whit some random noises from a noise source through an AS "EMS" filter, an AS echo module and the korg PME40X pedal board.

The mandolin was not used ...;"

Buchla Modular Sounds 21 - 210e Tip

Published on Nov 30, 2013 pjoris2·113 videos

"An example of the 210e used as preset manager for non-e modules.

In this case I have two patches: a slow one and a fast one. In the slow one the envelopes on the 281e are slow and in the fast one, they are more snappy. But I use the Pendulum Ratchet as main clock and want also speed of the Time Machine adjusted etc.

So I take a fixed voltage from the 254v and plug it in the 210e control section and take a CV output of the 210e an patch it to the clock CV input of the Pendulum Ratchet with attenuator fully open (clockwise). The first (Slow) preset now has the input to output connection fully closed; the second (Fast) has it partly open. Two other CV outputs have the opposite (partly open for slow preset, closed for fast preset.

Similar patching was done for the delay time CV input (long in slow preset, short in fast), amount of modulation of delay time (more in slow preset),slew speed on the slew module-module, offset of K4816, waveform of 258v etc."

Serge Creature VCFQ Demo

Published on May 13, 2013 pjoris2·29 videos

"The second in the series of videos showing the capabilities of the Serge Creature. This time looking at the Variable Q Voltage-Controlled Filter (VCFQ). The sounds made are mostly using the TGO saw output through the filter. Modulation from the TGO and SSG modules. Overview of the video:
Basic Filtering
(00:30) Filtering of a saw wave with the filter: lowpass output. Setting the Q of the filter higher with every sweep.
(02:00) The same, using the highpass output.
(02:30) Bandpass output
(03:00) Notch output. Does not seem to do much ...
The first section was using the "AGC In" input. This input has automatic gain control to avoid overloading the filter when setting higher Q-values. The input labeled "In" does not have this, but has a manual gain pot. You can overload the filter using this input.
(03:30) Not dramatically different, but you hear some saturation and see some distortion (squaring of waveform) on the oscilloscope.
Filter Cut-off Modulation
(04:00) Using the VC F (variable CV) input. There is also a 1/V Oct input, which I fail to demonstrate here.
(04:30) Some nice "vocal" sounds using audio-rate modulation.
Pinging the Filter: when feeding a pulse in the trigger in the filter resonates in an acoustic sound way: "pinging" the filter.
(05:00) Just some various sounds varying the cut-off frequency and Q settings.
(06:00) Using the CV inputs for Q and cutoff frequency.
(06:30) Feeding audio in the trigger input.
(07:00) And some audio rate modulation of Q and/or cut-off frequency. Getting into noise territory again !
The filter doesn't go into self-oscillation by itself, but it does when you feed the bandpass output back in the filter through the "In" input. Bringing up the gain then gives (without any audio output) self-oscillation of the filter. Note: you must use the bandpass out and the "In" input. Using the low-pass out or "AGC input" does not work.
(08:00) Demonstration of the self-oscillation. Hard to get a pure sine out of it. You can control overloading the filter with the gain, but if you turn it to far down you lose self-oscillation in higher frequencies.
Some sounds: two audio demonstrations (no relation between video and sounds any more ...)
(10:00) Random sequence using the low pass out
(11:00) Some pinging through an analogue delay pedal."

Syncing Volca Beats and Kilpatrick Modular and Buchla

Published on Dec 21, 2013 pjoris2·124 videos

"Quick demonstration of a few ways to sync the Volca Beats to my modular:
1. Using arpeggio notes of the Korg Microstation to trigger the Volca Beats (trigger in) via a midi to cv convertor (Kilpatrick in this case)
2. Midi clock in the Volca Beats (midi through on the Kilpatrick)
3. Using trigger out of the sequencer (clock out works also)"
